justinsaccount··on ChatGPT chats were indexed then removed from search but still remain online
It says public. twice.
justinsaccount··on Tunarr: Create and configure live TV channels from media on your servers
Not really. the definition of what the 'next' stream is could easily change depending on what the last button you pressed, with the assumption that you would continue pressing that button:

  * up - next stream is one more channel up
  * down - next stream is one more channel down
  * last/prev - next stream is the previous channel.

justinsaccount··on Show HN: Watch 3 AIs compete in real-time stock trading
Do you know the difference between a limit order and a market order?

justinsaccount··on Using gRPC for (local) inter-process communication – F. Werner's Research Page
> In our scenario of local IPC, some obvious tuning options exist: data is exchanged via a Unix domain socket (unix:// address) instead of a TCP socket

AFAIK at least on linux there is no difference between using a UDS and a tcp socket connected to localhost.

justinsaccount··on Netflix buffering issues: Boxing fans complain about Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson

justinsaccount··on Jepsen: Bufstream 0.1
Weird, I would have guessed that it auto commits the previous batch when it polls for the next batch, meaning it would be like

  loop:
messages = poll() # poll returns new messages and commits previous batch
    process(messages)
but it sounds like it "poll returns new messages and immediately commits them."

justinsaccount··on The journey of an internet packet: Exploring networks with traceroute
> But then, the path is broken, and we can’t reach the destination computer.

No. This is not what this output means.

People should not read more into what traceroute says than what it actually does.

* * * means that traceroute did not get an ICMP time exceeded for that probe. that's it. It says nothing about if you can actually reach the destination.

justinsaccount··on Dokku: My favorite personal serverless platform
dokku does a lot of things that docker-compose does not. One of the bigger ones is zero downtime deploys:

https://dokku.com/docs/deployment/zero-downtime-deploys/

This has the added benefit of warming up the app before traffic ever hits it, something I was always surprised that even heroku didn't do (at least, the last time I used it ~6 years ago)

justinsaccount··on How I won $2,750 using JavaScript, AI, and a can of WD-40

  Lubricating a sliding door
  Quieting a squeaky door hinge
  Lubricating an HVAC register lever
Wd-40 is not really a lubricant. You can use WD-40 to clean gunk out of things, but you really need to follow it up with a proper lubricating oil
justinsaccount··on Go is my hammer, and everything is a nail
Yep.. say you wanted to make a simple http service that needs to

* request a json.gz file from another HTTP service * decompress it * deserialize the json, transform it a bit

That's net/http (and maybe crypto/tls), compress/gzip, encoding/json. I need to make zero decisions to get the thing off the ground. Are they the best libraries in the world for those things? no.. but will they work just fine for almost every use case.

justinsaccount··on Is it time to version observability?
> Logs are independent. When you can not store every event, you can drop them randomly. You lose a perfect view of every logged event, but you still retain a statistical view. As we have already assumed you can not log everything, this is the best you can do anyways.

I think one of the google SRE books mentioned why you don't want to simply randomly sample events. If you're do something like storing http events and logging 1 event per 1000 and you have a small burst of errors from some service failing, you'd potentially miss all or most of them. For certain types of events you want a random sample per [endpoint/status code/whatever], potentially at different rates.. .1% of 200 responses, but 1% of 500 errors.

justinsaccount··on Why Polars rewrote its Arrow string data type

justinsaccount··on Xbox console sales continue to crater with 42% revenue drop
Sony naming: Playstation, PS 2, PS 3, PS 4, PS 4 Pro, PS 5

Microsoft naming: Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox One S, Xbox One X, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S

It makes no sense. The second one was "360" and not the third one as you might expect, because the third one is "one".

justinsaccount··on Let's consign CAP to the cabinet of curiosities

replace north and south america with any two disparate locations.
justinsaccount··on Let's consign CAP to the cabinet of curiosities

What a convenient world where the client is not affected by the network partition.
