justinator··on Why the Bronze Age Collapsed
Not sure why the downvotes? The number was really that high and this is the basic reason the Aztecs were defeated:

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/jan/16/mexico-500-yea...

Within five years as many as 15 million people – an estimated 80% of the population – were wiped out in an epidemic the locals named “cocoliztli”. The word means pestilence in the Aztec Nahuatl language.

>you should read Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond.

That book has some many errors in it I actually suggest you don't read it.

More like 95%.
justinator··on Why doesn't anyone want to fix one of America's scariest roads?
Maybe this is a sign you spend too much shit posting on this site. It's your life and all, but;
justinator··on Why doesn't anyone want to fix one of America's scariest roads?
Most people in the World don't. Most people also know when not to make flippant comments on subjects they don't have much knowledge about.

But do continue your charade, I also believe in free speech.

If you are, for a year, constantly hiring senior software engineers? That tells me you're just throwing engineers at problems, which is not how problems are solved elegantly. That's sliding into Brook's Law.
justinator··on 28% of job postings on company career sites have been open over 90 days
>If we decide we're going to grow headcount by 10 senior software engineers, we don't copy and paste the same job listing 10 times.

I'm not confused that's just a red flag not to work for your company.

justinator··on 28% of job postings on company career sites have been open over 90 days
n of 1 and all, but most jobs I've gotten that were worth getting were from personal reference. To the extent that applying through job sites seems like a real waste of time unless I'm really desperate.

And to reflect that, the jobs I've gotten were the ones you'd only accept if you were really desperate.

(Covid Times, man: Covid Times.)

justinator··on 28% of job postings on company career sites have been open over 90 days
I was under the impression a large % of jobs posted on jobs sites are done simply for compliance reasons and because HR has some "bullshit jobs" parts to it and the companies will usually simply hire from within the company itself.

Is this one of those, "US only First World country that has this sort of problem" problems?

I can only imagine why?

Amazing -- appreciate the explanation.

Just spitballing here, can't you just store the salt alone and make the hyper-saturated salt water on the fly? That seems reasonable.
justinator··on macOS 27 Golden Gate – Review
Other than the 17G LM and associate features I won't use and will attempt at least to ignore, looks like a boring release with some good bug fixes including cosmetic. So, alright.

I'm happy to have gotten the max SSD when I got this thing, and I'm already juggling external drives (mostly for large media projects). I guess business as usual.

Doesn't ycombinator run a business where they let people borrow money with a high degree of likelihood that the venture will be a complete failure?

If I was the receiver of such a loan, am I just going to give myself a huge salary, or what it is that you do, here?

justinator··on iPhone Duo
I cannot with good faith tell you the financials of every HN user to any degree of accuracy to defend a statement like you're defending.

What you have is a "guess".

Maybe one data point is that this forum is open to all, without any gatekeeping based on salary?

Looking forward to the photo samples with the variable aperture. If it's something you can manually set (with the Camera app or third party), that would be neat. The miniaturization of this mechanical piece is really quite wild.

Eh, that's maybe about it.

Not sure if this new reimagining of the Apple Vision Pro is going to make it a hit.

>We (the HN audience) have disposable income

Ah the fallacy of thinking a collection of individuals as being a homogeneity.

justinator··on DaVinci Resolve 21.1
I'm not doing serious scripting, but that scripting allowed a clever way for open source products to work with Davinci, without them being wholly tied to the Davinci Way of Doing Things(tm), and that allows the app to work standalone, as well as with Davinci's competitors.

It doesn't cost Davinci any more dev time to keep it enabled in the free version as the scripting engine is used throughout the app.

And weird to drop support in an odd point release. Usually when features are Studio-only, you'll get a prompt "hey you've reached the limit of the free abilities". Trying already installed scripts after upgrading just failed silently, which was a pain in my butt to debug.

justinator··on The coolest use for the Vision Pro
It's the Hamptons, these houses are for some of the wealthiest people on the planet.

I'd make them wear a giant visor over their face rather than have to talk to them directly too. They're also some of the most insufferable people you'll ever meet.

justinator··on Is this the end of the once-mighty GoPro?
One of the benefits of these old eTrex models is that they run on AA's, so they're used for things like long distance cycling (across countries).

I don't know if there are top tier models that run on replaceable batteries you can get at any gas station.
