justicezyx··on President Daniels responds to Chinese student's harassment
The point in 1984 is that *everyone* can fall victim to mental manipulation, and an observer can discover the manipulation easily. Like American sees the hypocrisy of Chinese democracy, and, equally, Chinese seeing the hypocrisy of American one. They are virtually identical in the observation, and both sides can easily convince themselves of their own conviction.

God, I only wish this time the leaders from the both sides are responsible ones, people like Trump on both sides can easily make wars in a wink of eyes with both sides seeing each other this way.

The sideline point is that one is the worst judge of themselves...

Well the crypto will say the same thing about the non believer.

I took a pragmatic view: 1) it seems a useful hedge asset against stock market (although it becomes more and more linked nowadays) and other fiat money dominant security market. 2) it seems have some value of bringing financial products to more people (albeit today the new users are fleeced immediately when they enter the market, without getting any value from it). 3) it seems has a lot of engineers working in this space (which seems a good technical problem).

justicezyx··on The Invention of Chinese
All these statements are wrong. I'll list below.

Before going into the details, one has to note the vastness of Chinese sphere has always been at least an order of magnitude bigger than any other national systems on earth. So it's often that one has no experience in their lifetime to intuitively appreciate the linage and internal logic of the Chinese history and heritage.

Applying sweeping statement like "X is an invention", following the premise in the previous paragraph, usually is wrong automatically. Because the invention as a concept in smaller national system is not possible to be comparable to a much larger one. One has to perceive from the larger scope to appreciate the invention in the larger scope.

Another thing, social construction is not invention. One has to build on foundation and use materials from history and culture to create some thing new yet deeply rooted in the society for it to be long enduring social construct.

Now let's go into the details:

> Chinese (the official language) is an invention

No. It's built on top of writing system that has a clear linage dated to the tribal time: http://www.chinaknowledge.de/Literature/Historiography/oracl...

> The Han race (the identity) is an invention

No, Han race or group has been used dated at least back to Han dynasty. The concept of "people of hua xia (华夏)” was already a widely used term like in Hua Yi Zhi Bian (华夷之辩) I.e. the method of distinguish the hua xia people with the barbarian. The word Chinese is of course new, as Chinese consider then the center of mandate under haven, there is no sense to distinguish themselves as all others are barbarians.

> An ethnically integrated China (the identity and political system) is an invention. The Chinese nationalism (the ideology) is an invention.

No, ethnic integration happened volunterily and forcefully numerously over the history. From the early days of "Bavarians entering Hua Xia becomes part of Hua Xia" by Confucius in the spring autumn era. And Zhao WuLing Wang adopting babarian's horse riding and clothing custom https://zh.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E8%83%A1%E6%9C%8D%E9%A8%8E%... in the waring States era. And Sui dynasty's intermarriage between Xianbei and Han people in the north. This mingling ethnically and culturally have been happening constantly of the Chinese history.

> The invention of an integrated China is NOT sensible, because history

You supported this with Mao's statement when he was 27 (1893-1920), which himself througly discarded. That automatically price that the historical logic of unified Chinese and integrated China makes a lot of sense.

> Clear thinking of different concepts, and understanding what is being discussed, is needed for a fruitful discussion.

Sure.

But throwing new concetps constantly and without clear context and explanation, is not effective either.

> Calling unfamiliar concepts as “a debate of definition of words”, and not understanding what is being discussed, is not fruitful for discussion

I think it should be that arguing in novel concepts would make the counterpart feel the discussion becomes a debate of definition of words. For that I think we are talking same thing.

> Note that throughout the discussion, we are using “invention”, “construction”, or “convention” as the same concept, and study their consequences to the society, to politics, and to history.

No, I do not use invention construction and convention as the same concepts. If you are, then we indeed are in a debate of word definitions.

> This branch of social science, which studies created and accepted concepts, deals with “social constructs” [5].

Thanks for the pointer. I'll need to take a look after this post.

justicezyx··on The Invention of Chinese
Appreciate your efforts of laying our additional contexts. You led the discussion into a debate of conception or definition of words... I seem no fruitful results from this.

> literary merit most would be promptly dumped in the garbage

Hmm. This is utterly wrong.

I am dismayed by this attitude towards scifi writing based on the socalled "literary merit". What is literary merit? It's a measurement of the writer's ability to use human language to convey ideas. Just that. That skill is tangible between different content as well. Just because SciFi idea and a human emotional idea are different, do not translate into different literary merit.

Now back to the judge on "writer's ability to use human language to convey ideas".

Really, in what sense the SciFi writers are inferior to other literary writers in this measurement?

Isn't that SciFi writing are not poetic? Of course, SciFi are not poets. And if there is a poetic story, I see not reason why any SciFi writers cannot be poetic. Dune, in some parts, are certainly very poetic. Just because the content is not poetic, which would be a wrong choice to use poetic wordings, that does not dminish the litrary value.

Isn't that SciFi writing are not sophisticated enough? No, scifi's sophistication is the ideas, the ideas that builton futuristic technology and human environments. Those ideas are certainly less emotionally attached than other writings. But again, those ideas are better served in the SciFi writing. One can say SciFi ideas are less literary, but one cannot say SciFi writings are less litrary.

The list goes on and on...

This attitude towards SciFi itself is a symptom of the resistance from the stagnant literary community.

> an ethnically integrated China is, in fact, a modern invention linked to the rise of nationalism at the end of the nineteenth century.

This idea is a very sensible one in the context of China being forced to open up to the world. It's like a man, living in wild, has assume he was alone, and have no idea he was actually a male. Until one day he run into a similar creature that is a female.

The undernote of this is that Chinese society is extremely complex. Easily orders of magnitude more complex. Comparing to the US continental, the geographical diversity and the cultural heritage shows such a vast range of changes that one should feel US is probably culturally only equivalent to a typical province in China! They eat differently, speak different in accent and words of expression, have different customs in almost every aspects of the life (child birth, birthdag, marriage, funerals etc etc)...

China is indeed a humongous collective of diverse human communities that defies any singular or universal interpretation.

I also have no issue of embracing Chinese dictatorship when what?

The point is that nations are complicated. From individual to a national government. If you want to use dictatorship to describe 1.4b people's collective, then you are simply too lazy to think.

justicezyx··on eBPF will help solve service mesh by getting rid of sidecars
Oh nice, we haven't tried bounded loop, because our product is committed to support as old as 4.13.

BPF_TABLE is BCC.

justicezyx··on eBPF will help solve service mesh by getting rid of sidecars
I need to double verify when was the bounded loop patch got into the kernel, I suppose it's 5.6 as you mentioned above.

What I actually was thinking is that one can write C code and ask the compiler to unroll it.

``` pragma(unroll) for (..., i < 100; ++I) { parsing code } ```
Also the other comment note the stake bookkeeping for HTTP to maintain the state when the parsing spans multiple packets, assuming here we are talking about XDP probes.
One quick idea is to use BPF_TABLE(, uint128_t, some data structure) I haven't tested if uint128_t is OK as key type. And the data structure in the value needs more thoughts. Roughly I am thinking turn any state bookkeeping into some BPF tables, and keyed through whatever data that matches the context. This probably means uint128_t as Ipve/6 address, and a nested map with key as the port. Or combined v4 IP & port.
It'll be interesting. I suppose the code from Isovalent will eventually be open sourced. Or is it already so? Haven't checked yet.
justicezyx··on eBPF will help solve service mesh by getting rid of sidecars
Bounded loop plus 1M instruction limits in the 5.4 kernel (no record at hands about the exact version), gives a large range of supported headers. Also note that these BPF code are on the network level, which is subject to the MTU limit as well, which usually is 1500 and now can be 10s of KBs (65,525 bytes maxmial in theory accroding to https://www.lifewire.com/definition-of-mtu-817948, but my networking knownledge is poor). These makes it possible to effectively handle all possible headers.
HTTP is actually fine.
HTTP2 will be a bigger issue as it has HPACK, and Huffman coding, that would be very complicated to maintain inside BPF runtime. I haven't thought about it closely yet. But based on our experience at http://px.dev, I am not aware of any glaring technical obstacles.
justicezyx··on America is running on fumes
This article does not mention education as the cause, which I personally has to be the most important cause of declining creativity across the American society. My older daughter is in 2nd grade. I think from my eyes that the STEM education is about fun, not the hard-and-cold reasoning. For example, algebra is taught with tricks, not simply what they are, and the ugly rules that underpins those human invention (math is a human invention of describing the physical world).
And as Ray Dalio mentioned, education is not a federal responsibility, nor is the federal government allowed to exercise influence. Then we are left with declining education across the board.
It's just not possible to revert the trend, if the root of everything was allowed to be ignored. One cannot fix a sinking building by fixing anything other than the foundation!
justicezyx··on The CIA and the Media (1977)
I see no inherent issue with news agency cooperate with CIA or any other 3 letter agency, on projects for the good of the society and international community.
The issue, as you probably having in mind, is that media lost their independence in finance, political protection, etc. Those then gradually corrupted their spirit and mentality. To the point that they start to produce contents that are easily nidged and manipulated.
The first step of regaining media's strength is to rebuild a financial foundation for independent media. They should and must remain self-sufficient in support their own organization and employees.
I'll be mocked for this, but, it seems to me that only such tech right available is crypto and block chain. I see no other tech even remotely close.
I am not sure what do you want to say.
> Lets meet as friends in Tiananmen square - you wear a t-shirt saying ‘what happened here in 1989?’
I think the Tankman incident is a silver light in the whole event, i.e., the individual stand against the tank, and the tank decide to go different route; and eventually the confrontation was dissolved by bystanders.
If you emphasize the confrontation, you'll use the t-shirt you mentioned.
For me, I'll wear a t-shirt stating: remember the tragedy.
And what's the point of this to do with altering the perception on China? If you just narrow your viewpoint onto Tankman, that's going to miss so much of other things happening in China.
It's like focusing on Gorge Floyd, and ignoring all the other things happening in US.
What's the point of such narrow view?
> I’ll come dressed as Winnie the Pooh.
If you cut all the implication to Xi, I see no danger whatsoever of wearing that on Tiananmen, or anywhere in China.
Politics in China is different. That's just a cultural thing. Parents are also more authoritative, that's part of the cultural as well. Mocking people public is considered an insult. Not just to Xi, to any normal Chinese citizen, that's considered inappropriate.
If you feel that your own culture is so superior that others should automatically accept; and if they don't like it, then you'll call them a lot of bad words, and try to force the narrative, then you are practicing fascism?
Good luck with that.
No I totally think US is overall superior to China right now, when comparing 2 nations snapshot vs snapshot.
But, US perception on China is so bad compared the Chain perception on US, that this imbalance is creating a huge strategic risk between 2 nuclear super power, and causes both sides troubles when they need to collaborate.
That's why it's important to unshackle the US mass from the perception bias on China.
And that's what I want to convey. I.e., stop using grandiose sweeping argument like moral superiority, which is itself so large in scope that the comparison quickly lost any relevance.
No no no
That's just one possible explanation.
But the premises of 60% drop in birth rate from 2016 to 2918 is not verified in the first place...
I am still asking the source of 60% drop in birth rate of Uyghur groups. You probably need similar data for other ethnic groups to prove that this drop in Uyghur is unusual.
The point remains that no one is applying the same standard when discussing China related issues. Why birth rate drop is linked to genocide? Because it's China!
justicezyx··on Apple CEO Tim Cook 'secretly' signed $275B deal with China in 2016
> Uyghur birthrates dropped by a 60% between 2015 to 2018 according to Chinese government statistics.
First thing first. Dropped birth rate itself is from from genocide. China does not have genocide on Han people, even if the birth rate dropped significantly https://www.jstor.org/stable/pdf/44133954.pdf
Then, where is the source data?
The birthrate of all ethnic groups are listed in https://zh.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E4%B8%AD%E5%9B%BD%E5%90%84%...
Note Uyghur (维吾尔族) birth rate is 1.991 in 2000 and 1.842 in 2010. The same time the other groups vary a lot, but mostly the difference lies in the area economy development degrees. Ie, more advanced areas have lower birth rate.
Planned birth can cause drop in birth rate. As in the case of the one child policy.
Planned birth is violating human rights. But it's not genocide.
All in all, check the facts and see who are producing them. I am not a professional reporter, and I only believe extraordinary claim require extraordinary proof.
All evidence so far can only lead to the speculation that Uyghur population might be growing much slower (for that I still not see evidence that it's outlier compared to the whole population trends in China as a whole, I.e., Chiese population is undergoing huge aging and low birth rate across the nation).
If you want to link one data points to genocide, then I assue you I can come up with genocide claims in any nations on earth.
Chinese central government can have a civil feedback channel, which does not make sense for US feral government, as that's not their scope of responsibility.
Government is setup to manage it's subject. It welcomes feedback, in general. Just like a company, the CEO welcome feedbacks. The government, likewise the CEO, are mostly worried when the subject refuse to care. Leaving everything in stagnation and limbo.
