justfortechnews··on Ask HN: Has Google search become quantitatively worse?
Another pro tip: try Brave Search instead (search.brave.com).

Still being refined, and it will take a while to be fully-competitive with Google, but the text search results are strong and, unlike DDG, it's an independent search index that doesn't rely on Bing.

justfortechnews··on Brave Search replaces Google as default search engine in the Brave browser
There's more info about this on the FAQ page: https://brave.com/privacy/browser/#web-discovery-project
justfortechnews··on How to Learn Stuff Quickly
I struggle with learning new domains or skills where I don't know what to focus on and start.

Example: I've always been fascinated by 'space' and have been determined to invest more time into this hobby by learning more. However, with such a giant array of disciplines (astronomy, cosmology, physics, astrobiology), I don't know where to focus, read a bunch of random information, and feel like I don't retain 90% of it.

It's easier, in my opinion, to learn a skill that has more of a practical application (like the author's Blender 3D modeling education).

justfortechnews··on Job board to work on problems like climate change and food insecurity
There's a similar company https://goodgigs.app/ that does this as well, but more built-out (and seemingly more focused on non-technical roles).

Not sure your plans for this page, but could be an interesting conversation with that founder.

justfortechnews··on Brave buys a search engine, promises no tracking, no profiling
Not sure, I don't use Firefox. I'd assume they don't, given that a lot of the privacy ethics in Brave carried over from Mozilla.

Seems to me that you're a small minority, and that most Brave users feel that the company IS aligned with them. The cryptocurrency was a key aspect for early user adoption, and the referral stuff is something that I only ever see mentioned on HN by clearly-biased commenters.

The messaging is not 'we're desperate for money', it's 'we're not funded by selling our users' personal data and are working to make a browser product that can self-sustain', something that, as of now, no other browser has been able to do.

justfortechnews··on Brave is launching its own search engine with the help of ex-Cliqz devs and tech
You seem fairly biased, and have included those links and accusations without any counter or responses from Brave.

#2, for example, is just false. Brave doesn't block ads and then inject their own; they block 3rd-party ads, and have an opt-in ad network. Doesn't replace or inject anything.

#1 gets brought up a lot on HN it seems, but sounds like it was an oversight and was fixed quickly. Same with #4. Every product has its issues, and as long as they're fixed quickly, it's understandable in my opinion.

There's a good overview of Brave's search engine focus from their team (the former Cliqz team) found in https://www.theregister.com/2021/03/03/brave_buys_a_search_e...

justfortechnews··on Pressing YubiKeys
Agreed - feel like I rarely see any YubiKeys outside of my coworkers' laptops.
justfortechnews··on The internet needs our love
Use Brave instead of Chrome.

There's plenty of other options to use instead of Chrome or FF.

justfortechnews··on Jitsi’s Emil Ivov on scaling up during a pandemic
Brave recently released Together, which uses Jitsi. Wish we could see a bigger push towards staying off Zoom and Meet. Seems like Jitsi, Together and others can provide solid alternates to Zoom - just a matter of getting users to care enough to switch.
justfortechnews··on Update on Firefox Send and Firefox Notes
Do you still work for Mozilla?

I see you worked on Send, and am surprised that you'd comment on here in such fashion about the decision-making to not charge for Send.

justfortechnews··on Thoughts on user growth and product
Some wise advice here. I relate to the thought on cyclical user growth.

Some execs refuse to hear that Q3 is regularly going to be a dead space no matter how aggressive the company gets, for example. It's a challenging work environment when there's no room for a down month or a holiday-season slump.
