justforFranz··on Populism and the Economics of Globalization [pdf]
Not to let Hillary Clinton off the hook, much of her appeal was about defending & protecting minorities (and women) from continued discrimination. And from what we've been shown during the campaign and since then, discrimination is alive and well - even if it doesn't affect you personally.

But yeah, I doubt Hillary would have helped labor to generate the kind of pricing power they need to keep the society from caving in.

justforFranz··on Populism and the Economics of Globalization [pdf]
1. Labor has no pricing power.

2. All the spigots for cheap labor & goods have been on full blast with no real sign of slowing - at all.

3. We can't have a mature conversation in this country about adjusting the pace of change in society. It's basically whatever capital wants, capital gets.

4. Since productivity gains were decoupled from labor's wage increases in the late 1970's, the notion of "getting ahead" by working & providing labor is ultimately an exercise in irony.

5. Ameliorating these concerns by replacing them with race antagonism is deeply stupid.

6. Fundamentalism of all religious stripes is a conservative reaction against encroaching modernity, globalization & cosmopolitanism - which upsets local power hierarchies & is a threat to the status quo.

7. We need labor power with continued, but this time measured international engagement. Isolationism won't work and is an over-reaction.

justforFranz··on Don't Use Raspberry Pi for Everything
The author's points are valid. However, there's no recognition of the tremendous marketing, documentation, training, community & ecosystem surrounding the platform.

These things are real, they are as real as any code that's written. They are as real as any hardware.

So yes, the Raspberry Pi is a great, fantastic introduction into this IOT world. The security problems are real, that should be the first thing attended to.

And then yes, once you get the basics down it should be easy to move to a better platform/device/doohicky.

justforFranz··on Fox News Is Dropping Its ‘Fair and Balanced’ Slogan
That's nice. I guess.

OK, actually it isn't. Why do so many of us, who are all so well-aware that Fox News is utter garbage, continue to talk about it? I mean,.. I think this topic has been as deeply explored as it needs to be.

justforFranz··on Living in 80 square feet (2010)
I love how this story fits well into our currently economic ideology of vast wealth inequality, evaporating pensions, vanishing healthcare, crumbling infrastructure, labor with no pricing power, etc.
justforFranz··on Wal-Mart will pay employees to deliver packages on their way home
It's all fun & free-market capitalism until the employee gets into an accident and then who's liable, or if they go to some murderer/cannibal's house who was just ordering a late-night snack?
justforFranz··on Google starts tracking what people buy in physical stores
I'm not concerned. By the time they've figured out what everyone is buying, people won't have any money anymore to buy anything. So... whatever.
justforFranz··on Why American Workers Now Dress So Casually
Because they're fat.
justforFranz··on NSA secretly conducted illegal searches on Americans for years
I think the practical way to go about this is to distinguish between what's ACTUALLY dangerous, actually harming people (beyond the loss of their privacy), and what's POTENTIALLY dangerous. Because I think it's easy for people to conflate the two.

For instance, are people being rounded up and having bad things happen to them? Yes. People suspected of being illegal immigrants (or undocumented) and who are also suspected of being violent criminals are being rounded up. Also, there seems to be the odd case or 12 of someone who is undocumented, but is otherwise a thoroughly upstanding individual.

The second thing I believe needs consideration is to determine exactly what line does the government need to cross for this POTENTIALLY dangerous privacy invasion to become ACTUAL, PRESENT dangers.

The problem, of course, is getting consensus. Particularly when there's heavy foreign influence on the Internet & government. When so much of the news media promotes racism & nationalism. The possibility of the people being divided and conquered is a POSSIBILITY, given our acceptance of nationalism.
