justeleblanc··on I liked this simple calculus exercise
Exam questions have two wonderful property: they have an answer, and the person who wrote it knows that you have the knowledge to find the answer.
justeleblanc··on I liked this simple calculus exercise
That's how you find any reciprocal function's derivative. If g = f^{-1}, then g'(y) = 1/f'(g(y)).
justeleblanc··on Microsoft deleted the public support forums for SwiftKey
How is it "being ruined"? I use it every day and it works fine.
justeleblanc··on I made my blog solar-powered, then things escalated
> And I hate it. miles-per-gallon is much easier to understand I think.

It's just something you're used to.

> I'd rather know how far a tank will get me than how much fuel I'll use to travel exactly 100km

Well, there you go, you're comparing apples to oranges. Unless your tank is exactly one gallon, you've made a conversion when you compute how far a tank will get you. Well, we do the same thing here. I want to travel 500 km? I'll multiply my L/100km by 5 and get how much gas I need. This tells me how many times I'll have to refuel, etc.

justeleblanc··on What is NMAP and how to use it? (2020)
I hadn't heard of tldr. Looks neat! Here's a link for other people who didn't know: https://github.com/tldr-pages/tldr

Neither are western digital services.
justeleblanc··on Hackers claim vast access to Western Digital systems
So what, fuck the people living there? And who are you to decide that some state is "mostly defunct"?
justeleblanc··on Terence Tao on GPT-4
He was the chairman of the ICM structure committee. Having stats on how previous ICMs were organized is obviously useful to him. It's not "people who want this data" who ordered him to gather it (not that anyone could order Tao anything), he wanted the data to use it himself. He had the choice between sifting manually through dozens of webpages or automating the task.
justeleblanc··on Elon Musk says Twitter is roughly breaking even
Why should anyone believe him?
justeleblanc··on Rules for developers to design beautiful UIs without a designer
You've basically just answered "with a brush" to the question "how do you think I should paint my wall". True, but irrelevant. You can make a ugly, unusable UIs with your listed frameworks. You can make amazing, smooth UIs with plain HTML+CSS.

justeleblanc··on Europe drastically cut its energy consumption this winter
No wonders that country is one of the worst polluters in the world. Windows open at 75F in the winter? That's just stupid. Plain stupid and irresponsible.
justeleblanc··on Europe drastically cut its energy consumption this winter
> Everybody's body is different. I'm normally very resistant to cold, esp, if I'm moving, yet I cool down when I don't move, and esp. at nights (when body slows down even more), so I need a warmer environment (~20 degrees C) to live comfortably at nights.

You're describing something that is true of every human on Earth. Everyone gets cold when they don't move. Everyone's body cools down at night. You don't need 20C to sleep at night.

justeleblanc··on Europe drastically cut its energy consumption this winter
Put on a sweater and more underwear. Come on. 18C (about 64.5F for Americans) is not cold.
justeleblanc··on I’m a doctor: Here’s what I found when I asked ChatGPT to diagnose my patients
Can you give a single example of a "system" that works 100% well, 100% of the time?
justeleblanc··on No-cost access to the latest PDF standard: ISO 32000-2 (PDF 2.0)
ISO is funded by sales and membership fees from member states. It's been around for 75 years. If they're not sustainable, I don't know what organizations are.

justeleblanc··on PWAs in App Stores
Why not both? To avoid confusing App Store rules, long approval process, and the absurd 30% commissions
justeleblanc··on Apple halted M2 chip production in January amid 'plummeting' Mac sales
Private copy levy is so insignificant that it's just weird to mention it. We're talking about a tenth of a percent of the price of a MB here.

A good stance to have if you have access to a crystal ball that can tell the future, and you don't care about safety today.
justeleblanc··on Hexatrek: The long distance thru hike in France
All of that was already in the GR footpaths. I mean, come on, do you really believe it took a startuper to launch hiking in France?!

justeleblanc··on PC keyboard hides an interesting secret
Even Microsoft is going full steam ahead on arm64. It's here to stay.
justeleblanc··on Hexatrek: The long distance thru hike in France
Nice story. But all the guy did is take parts of 47 trails that have been around for decades and put them in a single map. The trail didn't "open last year". The website did, maybe.
justeleblanc··on Hexatrek: The long distance thru hike in France
There's nothing that makes a joke funnier than someone who explains why that joke is statistically unsound.
justeleblanc··on CFTC sues Binance and CEO Changpeng Zhao [pdf]
What are you hinting at with your reference to France? Yes, France has a civil law legal system. Knowledge and intent are still considered when deciding on guilt and sentence. What's your point?
justeleblanc··on Zig Quirks
Well, OOP was used, and its naming conventions settled, decades before Rust or D came along. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simula for example. They decided to go against established conventions (as far as I understand - I don't know what the relationship between Rust modules and classes is). That's fine, but let's not pretend otherwise.
justeleblanc··on Zig Quirks
> D has a more unusual take on private fields. Private fields prevent access by other modules, but do not prevent access from within the same module. The module is really the unit of encapsulation, not the struct.

Other languages would call these "internal", not "private".

justeleblanc··on Why a European mobile operating system can’t challenge Android and iOS
I've traveled a lot in Europe. People like to harp on France, but I've found that in most countries, outside big cities, English proficiency was not widespread.
