justcallmejm··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (June 2026)
Aloe | Multiple Engineering & Research roles | ONSITE Vancouver, BC, Canada | Full-time

Aloe is the epistemic intelligence lab building AI we can trust with humanity's most important applications. We work on research and products that bring introspection to AI and critical thinking to machines. Our Agent Models are designed for decision-making in the real world – AI that understands what it does and doesn't know, reasons about its limitations, and directs its own learning to self-improve.

Please read the job description and include in your outreach why you fit not just the role but also our culture. We strive to be Level 5 humans, co-creating a deliberately developmental atmosphere.

https://aloe.inc/careers

The future we’re building for:

- Commoditize access to expertise, capability, and AI’s economic promise for both businesses and end-users

- Make new discoveries, products, and experiences possible at speeds unbound from human performance

- Defend against negligent or malicious use of AI with internal governance and risk evaluation at the foundation

- Invert the extraction economy with AI that respects human cognition instead of exploiting it

justcallmejm··on An AI Hate Wave Is Here
Will the "normies" slow down development of AI? Is it useful pressure to dislodge us from a presently-dystopian path, or is it just prolonging the inevitable?
justcallmejm··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (December 2025)
Aloe | Vancouver, BC, Canada (ONSITE preference)

Aloe is the critical thinking layer for agents – to know why they believe what they do, how confident they are, and what actions they can take to increase that confidence. It’s the only path to AI we can trust, delegate to, and rely on.

Aloe exists to build tools to help human cognition succeed in an information-dense world it did not evolve to handle. We believe this is the most important problem to solve today.

justcallmejm··on Intelligence on Earth
What you’re saying ascribes more to the definition of intelligence than the author’s. “Memory that modifies behavior” doesn’t have any stated purpose whereas you’re suggesting that its purpose must be to reduce uncertainty. The latter sounds closer to a definition of knowledge - i.e. experience compressed into something with predictive power.
justcallmejm··on GenAI Predictions
“panoply of grifters and chancers and financial engineers” — accurate

Yet, let’s look at intelligence for a sec… it’s been evolving for quite some time and isn’t stopping at humans. Humans are building intelligence at a rate far faster than biological evolution. It is almost inevitable (pending humans wiping ourselves out by any number of catastrophic failures of governance) that we will build intelligence that supersedes our own. Yeah?

I’m a co-founder of Aloe (https://aloe.inc) - a generalist AI that recently became state of the art on the GAIA benchmark. As I was hand-checking the output of our test to ensure Aloe had done the task, not just found answers in some leak online, I had a real come-to-Jesus moment when it hit that this agent is already a better problem-solver than most of the adults I’ve worked with in my career. And this is the floor of its capability.

It is a humbling moment to be human. The few humans at the helms of companies developing these technologies will inevitably reshape the trajectory of humanity.

justcallmejm··on OpenAI: Models are programmed to make stuff up instead of admitting ignorance
This is the problem Aloe (a state-of-the-art agent designed and built by a cognitive scientist) is solving. This article out yesterday delves into exactly that: https://puck.news/is-aloe-the-first-self-building-ai/?sharer...
justcallmejm··on OpenAI’s latest research paper demonstrates that falsehoods are inevitable
This is why a neurosymbolic system is necessary, which Aloe (https://aloe.inc) recently demonstrated exceeds performance of frontier models, using a model agnostic approach.
justcallmejm··on Scamlexity: When agentic AI browsers get scammed
Consumers don’t need to want it; VCs just need to imagine making money off it.
justcallmejm··on AGI is an engineering problem, not a model training problem
The missing science to engineer intelligence is composable program synthesis. Aloe (https://aloe.inc) recently released a GAIA score demonstrating how CPS dramatically outperforms other generalist agents (OpenAI's deep research, Manus, and Genspark) on tasks similar to those a knowledge worker would perform.

I'd argue it's because intelligence has been treated as a ML/NN engineering problem that we've had the hyper focus on improving LLMs rather than the approach articulated in the essay.

Intelligence must be built from a first principles theory of what intelligence actually is.

justcallmejm··on A Comprehensive Survey of Self-Evolving AI Agents [pdf]
Nope - Aloe - https://aloe.inc
justcallmejm··on A Comprehensive Survey of Self-Evolving AI Agents [pdf]
Missing from this paper: Aloe, a self-evolving agent that creates its own tools in real time as it encounters new problems. It can then use these tools to create still-better tools.

It just beat OpenAI by 20 points on GAIA – interestingly by the widest margin (30 points) on the hardest questions.

justcallmejm··on Is the A.I. Boom Turning Into an A.I. Bubble?
"In the A.I. economy, it seems possible that many of the rewards will go to top firms that can afford to build and maintain large A.I. models..."

This is a flawed (and common, still, somehow!) idea of where value is within AI. The gigantic models are commoditizing rapidly. They practically incinerate cash.

There is real value being created at the layer where users can use a product they can actually trust. LLMs are certainly not that.

Our system, Aloe, is model agnostic - so when next month's model comes out we just get better. And we already beat the pants off the frontier models in capability, spending a tiny fraction of a percent of the capital to build the system.

The existing concentration of capital into big LLM companies is indeed a bubble. Eventually some of those VCs will wake up and invest where the value is being created, I presume.

justcallmejm··on GPT-5: Overdue, overhyped and underwhelming. And that's not the worst of it
Aloe's neurosymbolic system just beat OpenAI's deep research score on the GAIA benchmark by 20 points. While Gary is full of bluster, he does know a few things about the limitations of LLMs. :) (aloe.inc)
justcallmejm··on GPT-5: Overdue, overhyped and underwhelming. And that's not the worst of it
Perception and understanding are different things. Just because you have wiring in your body to perceive certain vibrations in spacetime in certain ways, does not mean that you fully grasp reality - you have some data about reality, but that data comprises an incomplete, human-biased world model.
justcallmejm··on GPT-5
It is definitively not possible. But the frontier models are no longer “just” LLMs, either. They are neurosymbolic systems (an LLM using tools); they just don’t say it transparently because it’s not a convenient narrative that intelligence comes from something outside the model, rather than from endless scaling.

At Aloe, we are model agnostic and outperforming frontier models. It’s the anrchitecture around the LLM that makes the difference. For instance our system using Gemini can do things that Gemini can’t do on its own. All an LLM will ever do is hallucinate. If you want something with human-like general intelligence, keep looking beyond LLMs.

justcallmejm··on Attention is your scarcest resource (2020)
This is precisely why we (two longtime Vipassana meditators) built Aloe. Attention is the precursor to agency. It’s all we’ve got. In today’s over-saturated information environment we need superhuman attention if we’re going to have any agency left.
justcallmejm··on AI Became the New Dot-Com Bubble [video]
When a startup with a tiny team that’s raised 580,000x less than OpenAI can outperform them on capability…I’d call that a bubble :)
justcallmejm··on Study mode
Can it help me study epistemology so I can tell whether I can trust it or not?
justcallmejm··on US AI Action Plan
xAI seeks truth…as long as that truth confirms Elon’s previously held beliefs
justcallmejm··on US AI Action Plan
All an LLM is IS bias. It’s a bag of heuristics. An intuition - a pattern matcher.

Only way to get rid of bias is the same way as in a human: metacognition.

Metacognition makes both humans and AI smarter because it makes us capable of applying internal skepticism.

justcallmejm··on Tech oligarchs have turned against the system that made them
None of us is free until we are all free. It's a pathetic lack of reasoning to arrive at his conclusions.
justcallmejm··on Ask HN: What are some cool or underrated tech companies based in Canada?
https://aloe.inc Check out Aloe - the founding team left the Bay Area to found the company in Vancouver to have better access to top international talent. Here's a peek at what we're building: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6M5wSv6pyU
justcallmejm··on Scientific conferences are leaving the US amid border fears
The scientific community inherently has their eyes wide open to seeing reality as it is, and the assessment that the US is a hostile place to the reality-based community is a no-brainer.

I was born in the Midwest, have lived my entire adult life in SF, and recently was relieved to get my permanent residency in Canada - moving to Vancouver, BC soon. My co-founder (who is Canadian but has lived in California for 25 years) and I know we won’t be able to attract world-class talent to a country that is trying to go back in time to pre-Enlightenment era.
