justanother··on A robotic sewing machine could throw garment workers out of a job
Why does this remind me of the invention (and widespread adoption) of the Cotton Gin, which itself is partly blamed for the United States Civil War? The parallels to the Industrial Revolution are everywhere you look these days.
justanother··on Section 215 Expires For Now
Anyone with an Internet connection can now see from Congressional-level reports that Saudi hijackers received embassy-level support from the Saudi government for their actions, or that the Iraqi 'Yellow Cake' fairy tales were exactly that. At the advice of our intelligence agencies, we invaded, and continue to 'advise' ... Afghanistan and Iraq, even as the logistical and air conditioning bills alone for such actions constitute the world's largest military expenditures. I might even be willing to entertain Sec 702 if I could see for one moment how it helps in such light (ie, when the 'intelligence agencies' manufacture politically expedient fiction instead of honest SIGINT and HUMINT).
justanother··on Fast food workers you don't deserve 15 an hour to flip burgers and that is ok
This is the wrong argument. Wages should be based on what the market will bear, not merit, and this practically an axiom of free-market conservative thought. In fact, arguing from merit is something I'd expect from gasp leftists. If these people are successful in their collective bargaining, then congratulations, $15 an hour is what the market will bear for their services and they deserve every shiny penny.
justanother··on Kansas Police shutdown cannabis oil activist’s Facebook
Nevermind the Facebook page, they took her son into custody and questioned him without parental consent or legal representation? I truly hope this ends badly for the 'authorities' responsible, as it sounds to me like kidnapping.
justanother··on Boltons: over 100 Python utilities
Is that their real name?

Are they related to that singer guy?

justanother··on More than 39M Americans Only Have Access to One Wired Broadband Provider
Greetings from beautiful Cedar Key, Florida. Bright House Networks will take your order for 90Mbps cablemodem, but the installer who eventually comes out will tell you that they don't do cablemodem here. AT&T will sell you 3Mbps (yes that's a 3) DSL that has horrendous packet loss and dropouts. There are no WISPs, although expensive LTE service is really good. Fortunately this is an area that is eligible for Exede Satellite Internet's Freedom plan, which is enough for work, google hangouts, Netflix, and more. TL;DR zero reliable wired providers of any sort, and one terrible one.

[Disclaimer: Do not interpret this as a complaint, I knew what I was getting into when I moved here, and I do love this place for a lot of reasons]

justanother··on Reaction to the Sony Hack Is 'Beyond the Realm of Stupid'
The situation as analyzed in this article highlights the misgivings I have always harbored about the term 'terrorism'. Once we classify a particular set of criminal behavior as being so much more heinous than ordinary crime, we pretty much invite everything, over a long enough time scale, to slide down the slippery slope into this new classification. When I was much younger, this word referred to organized groups whose sole aim was murder and destruction. Now it is applied to children who point fingers at each other and say "bang!" as well as whistleblowers and (apparently) people who hack movie studios. Is it time to retire 'terrorism' yet?
justanother··on NSA Director Says Agency Shares Vast Majority of Bugs It Finds
So they share a "vast majority," but still keep many to themselves because they don't think anyone else is persistent enough to find them ("How likely are others to find it?"), in addition to telling a lie about developing the fix for Heartbleed. Nothing new here.
justanother··on I Had a Stroke at 33
I'll never forget the year I had laproscopic surgery to remove my gallbladder, not because of the experience (although being asked for $3000, in cash, before they'd let me into the OR, was interesting, but welcome to America), but because I ended up hitting my $5000 or so out-of-pocket maximum, between that and co-pays for a few other visits. For the remaining 6 months of the year, I joked that I was living it up Canadian style, and actually visited the doctor to get regular exams and to get medicated for influenza, you know, the things everyone should do, but a large double-digit percentage of Americans can't. Ahh, the good life...
justanother··on We Owe It All to the Hippies (1995)
If there's one thing I enjoy from music (and music videos) from the 1980s, it is the unbounded optimism and bubbly nature. We were going to change the world, "with _science_!" And I often think of the early-to-mid 1990s Internet as a hangover of this mentality. We laughed off the Clinton Administration's Clipper chip, even as rumors abounded of the NSA peering at every NAP. We were, after all, unstoppable. We were going to change the world with science.

I don't want to sound too negative, because it's never too late for a comeback, but for the moment at least, this thing has been turned against us by corporate interests and the NSA. Were I a pessimist, I'd quote Easy Rider and say, "You know, man, we blew it."

That is, if I were a pessimist. I'm still pretty sure we can put this thing together like it was supposed to be.

justanother··on Ask HN: How Do I Become A 'Good' Programmer... Like Everyone Else Here
You're good now because that feeling is how discovery feels (Dunning-Kruger effect and all that). It challenges and humbles you, and sometimes makes you wonder how you'll ever catch up. As long as you feel this way, you're probably doing something right. As soon as you think you know everything, that's when you're backsliding. Just try not to compare yourself to anyone else. Even Fabrice Bellard and John Carmack don't have the exact same demands placed on them as you, and therefore won't be developing the same skillset. But by all means, respect and listen to them.
justanother··on Ask HN: How Do I Become A 'Good' Programmer... Like Everyone Else Here
"Yet, every day I run across articles here and comments that make me feel incredibly useless and inexperienced."

You're 'Good' now. When you stop getting that feeling, you're no longer good.

justanother··on My website is being stolen in real time and I don't know what to do
In a word: Goatse.
justanother··on Scary 1929 market chart gains traction
I've been a doomsayer ever since the 2008 crisis (crises) exposed certain systemic flaws in finance and investing, and I've also been wrong while everyone else fed at the QE trough and did just fine.

While I don't believe that QE regimes and cooked statistics will necessarily end well, I also don't believe this chart proves anything. If you do, however, look into ultra-shorts like SDS and DXD, and if you happen to be correct, you can profit handsomely from such an elevator-shaft drop.

justanother··on A Great Old-Timey Game-Programming Hack
This is not unlike how 'fast' screen updates are done on the Apple IIGS. The fastest memory operations on the 6502 and 65816 involve the stack, so one ends up mapping the stack to the top of framebuffer RAM and pushing a lot of values onto it in an unrolled loop. The unrolled loop is itself rewritten by other code to provide the data for the next update.

Apple developer support themselves described this idea in Technote #70, http://www.1000bit.it/support/manuali/apple/technotes/iigs/t...

justanother··on North Korea 2013 – A travel journal
Does the trip really begin with bowing to a statue of Kim Il Sung? I don't have any moral problems with visiting the DPRK, but I've always harbored doubt that I could bring myself to do that one thing. Otherwise it looks like a fascinating tour.
justanother··on Store owner installs surveillance cameras to spy on police
An all-too-valid point whose realism I was unprepared to consider. Just because harassment isn't a proper or efficient means to stop drug trafficking, doesn't mean it isn't the case here.
justanother··on Store owner installs surveillance cameras to spy on police
I am uncertain as to which part of this argument rationalizes arresting an employee for 'trespassing' as he is carrying out his duties. As a glance at HN any day of the week will tell you, American LEOs have more legal tools at their disposal than ever before, to lawfully investigate a suspect. This is not one of them.
justanother··on Geeks for Monarchy: The Rise of the Neoreactionaries
This post reminds me of my problems with reading sites like Zerohedge. They're right about a few things, including severe structural issues in the current monetary system. But as soon as I hit the word 'SHEEPLE', I immediately close the browser tab and stop reading. The word strikes me as intellectually lazy on several levels, and this is certainly one of them.

justanother··on Mythbusting India's Mars Mission
One caravel and four carracks, carrying 270 men? A westward route to Asia? Senhor Magellan, why should we waste the Crown's treasury, when so many suffer?

justanother··on Is Google building a hulking floating data center in SF Bay?
My first thought: "Finally I'm interested in applying at Google, if it involves using my captain's license!"

My second thought: "Meh, the job interview probably involves writing a breadth-first search algorithm to search for known pirates in the graph of nearby ports."

justanother··on Why I moved to Miami
Because I'm unable to sell it unless I bring a large cashier's check to closing. It's more underwater than a submarine, even though I bought it in 2003 with 10% down. Till then, it rents (barely) profitably. Welcome to central Florida real estate.
justanother··on Why I moved to Miami
Lower Florida Keys resident here. I still own a place in Orlando which I have only visited once in the 6 years I've been gone. I got tired of hearing gunshots in the middle of the night. Between that and the chaotic (and plentiful) highway drivers, you couldn't possibly pay me to live in most (any?) large cities in mainland Florida. Despite being only 120 miles from Miami, I've still never visited, unless you count traffic jams when trying to get through it.

Once you get away from the urban nightmares, Florida isn't so bad though. Admittedly not everyone likes the climate, but I run a few miles every morning, even in the summer, and getting on a boat helps to cool off. No malls or dance clubs, and almost no big-box stores or fast food. But we do have Amazon Prime and a fishing pole.

justanother··on The core Internet institutions abandon the US Government
This. We nurtured it, we funded it, and as recently as WCIT-12, I personally had zero desire for international governance, as many other countries have some very 'non-open' ideas about what to do with the Internet. But, as it turns out, so do we.
justanother··on Police Claim Encryption Use Is Illegal
The website isn't exactly presented in a linear fashion, but I gather the issue is the subject's use of Truecrypt to contain his personal files, whereas on a company-owned computer, all data therein is company property.

This certainly seems like it should be a civil matter, not something to involve the guys with guns and blue suits. But more to the point, $21.50 an hour for a 1099 job for a huge bag-of-dicks of a boss who pirates all his desktop software? Is that BSA hotline still around, or do they even care about small fries?

justanother··on Rethinking the guest operating system
So we have a guest operating system that doesn't implement multitasking/timesharing because you can safely leave that up to the hypervisor. Is it just me, or is this more or less the same thing that was done with VM/CMS on IBM 370s in 1972?
justanother··on The Commodore 64 Spike: A Freakonomics-ish Theory of CS Education
It's about That Feeling. I got That Feeling from the Atari 800 and Apple IIgs, you got it from your C64, I sometimes manage to find it still, with the help of liquor and a Lisp interpreter (but not at all from the line-of-business apps that make my living now). Without That Feeling, you're not going to go past a certain level in software development, no matter how many dry facts you learn. How do kids get That Feeling today? It sure isn't from iOS devices.
justanother··on Craig Zucker: What Happens When a Man Takes on the Feds
Can I admit this? I used to admire this one aspect of the Federal government: The way they'd calmly and objectively state their case, without emotion, in indictments, in tax notices, in diplomatic letters. It was a model I strove to emulate in my correspondance in times of personal conflict.

No longer. They are increasingly vindictive and flighty.

Perhaps it was always this way, and we have the Internet to thank for giving us (as Paul Harvey would say) the rest of the story. At any rate, the loss of the calm, emotionless appeal indicates a loss of pack-leader, Alpha behavior, and among apes and most other orders of mammals, will lead directly to a loss of respect.
