jurassicfoxy··on Goodreads was the future of book reviews, then Amazon bought it
Whaaat I didn't know they owned AbeBooks. I love AbeBooks. I wonder how much of a cut they take from booksellers?
jurassicfoxy··on First 'tooth regrowth' medicine moves toward clinical trials in Japan
Maybe you just came up with a good idea for a PhD in dentistry.
jurassicfoxy··on Reddit’s blackout protest is set to continue indefinitely
Yes, I just saw the r/StarTrek migration, and visited Lemmy for the 3rd time or so this week, and quite frankly, I could drop reddit entirely now, if I knew how to find communities. I feel some real hacker/dev excitement for the future of Lemmy.
jurassicfoxy··on I Block Ads
I find highway billboards and store signage to be a particularly awful display, and I'd be overjoyed for them to be banned entirely. I have often thought about cutting down highway billboards, although I'm not quite intense enough for that.
jurassicfoxy··on Switching from QWERTY to Colemak and Back
I had a co-worker that could switch between qwerty and Dvorak instantly, it was amazing. And type very quickly in both.
jurassicfoxy··on Fuck being productive
I would be more generous and I think he's very much aware of it, since he wrote about how awful his commute is. It's a nearly insurmountable obstacle for most folks.
jurassicfoxy··on Gmail is showing ads in the middle of the inbox

jurassicfoxy··on Classic fountain pens
Are fountain pens exclusively a right-handed pleasure? I've tried, and the smudging has been an insurmountable obstacle.

I would love to hear from some fellow lefties. I love pens, ink, and paper, but I feel cursed.

jurassicfoxy··on Even Apple employees hate Siri and are skeptical of its future, new report says
The most impressive thing I can get Siri to do is "Hey Siri, play my <playlist name> on Spotify", and it works consistently. "Hey Siri, reply." is another decent one, but it seems to be working poorly lately.
jurassicfoxy··on Twitter was down
Reddit crashes almost weekly it seems. Search is completely broken. The site's UI (new, not old.reddit) is truly atrocious.
jurassicfoxy··on Microsoft Outlook has begun serving me ads that look like emails
After twice clicking on Google Maps directions that were very subtly labeled "ad" in tiny font, and driving to the entirely strong stores, I signed up for FastMail. Am migrating off Google products entirely. This kind of "accidentally click here" is evil. Would love to speak to the devs that implemented it. It's wild that this is so common.
jurassicfoxy··on Some Details of My Personal Infrastructure
I agree. This was one of the most motivating articles I've read in a while. This is a man who unabashedly goes 100 % all in to whatever he wants, fully admits it's nutty, and looks like he's having the time of his life.
jurassicfoxy··on Companies Manipulate Glassdoor by Inflating Rankings and Pressuring Employees
Agree. I was "invited" to Blind and every thread or comment were useless, antagonistic personal attacks, complaining, etc. It was very immature.
jurassicfoxy··on California’s Monarch Butterfly Population Hits Record Low
God I'm tired of hearing this platitude. Define "Fine" when 90% of the animals on earth are extinct? What is "fine" to you about that, exactly?
jurassicfoxy··on Every Building on Every Block: A Time Capsule of 1930s New York
I find it amazing that buildings (specifically the last one, the hotel) can be maintained in essentially the same state for over 100 years. I guess to a European this is normal but it feels like here in North America old things are much more rare.
jurassicfoxy··on Advent of Code Python Solutions, Explained
9th on the leaderboard is insane, great work.
jurassicfoxy··on Advent of Code Python Solutions, Explained
I recommend reading the solutions on the Advent of Code subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/adventofcode/

There are much more interesting, highly optimized solutions and better discussion, animations, etc.

jurassicfoxy··on Fortran is still a thing
Also professional engineers (who are the only engineers able to use the title "engineer") do P.Eng exams, and must maintain education / practice credits throughout their career. They must also practice as an Engineer in Training and record several years of experience before even applying. So yes, a "real" engineer is quite a lot more involved than new CS grad getting with 1 year experience getting a job as "Senior Software Engineer".
