junon··on So long Google, and thanks for all the nudes
They don't have access to the content anymore, as mentioned a bit later in the article.
junon··on "As a Language Model": Chat Template Switches LLM Self-Referential Voice
The UX "cringe" you speak of was/is a real methodology to product engineering. You'd have a number of personas, the user being one of them. A lot of the time you'd have more specific user personas, or even have fake names for these people who had different wants and needs from your product.

Then when brainstorming on a team, you'd start with "as a user"/"as an admin"/"as a Power-User"/"as Eva" and then use the first person. It framed the product story as something requested by that person.

Was just one way to go about it. Idk the origins of it though but it dates back to at least 2010 if memory serves, probably way before that.

junon··on 'That's so AI ' What gen Alpha's biggest insult tells us
They could 100% figure it out if TS was still a popular thing. What's with the assumption all the kids these days are utter zombies who can't think for themselves?

Opposite of my experience. A few family members and their friends invited me to a discord server recently; I'll join for games some nights. They're very acutely aware of how things work. We talk a lot about how even their schoolmates don't really use social media much (at least, not the big ones) and despise AI.

Gives me some hope that the kids will be alright.

This! Claude word salad is worse than maybe subpar translations, with which I'm sure PRs can help.
junon··on Grok 4.7
I'm wanted to try this exact thing! I'll have to try this now.
junon··on What Zig felt like, coming from Rust
A number of "<assertion>: <followup>" patterns too which is pretty common of at least Claude.
junon··on Ask A Monk – A digital wilderness for thoughts with no immediate answer
I saw both having used the site for ~20 minutes or so while taking a coffee break. I flagged the antisemitic content so it was probably removed.

That doesn't explain your point whatsoever.

I.. kind of like it? Aware that it isn't great and that I'm in the minority.
junon··on Ask A Monk – A digital wilderness for thoughts with no immediate answer
Just like all the other attempts at this, it's immediately filled with 1) AI content, and 2) anti-semitism.
junon··on My temporary PHP fix from 2014 has nearly 20M installs. Today I'm deprecating it
This is all very easy to say in hindsight. It's missing the context of having been there, I think. Things were just different.

Also, way more fun.

junon··on One year of sponsored Servo development
I didn't know about this but of NLnet history. I assumed you had been mistaken so I looked it up. That's really cool!

I think a lot of things end up that way, just at different timescales. Best we can do is learn from them and start again, IMO - however that looks.

I feel like I have to remind people of this quite often, but the history is such that npm was lightweight at one point, bundling wasn't a thing, and while `isodd`/`iseven` are of course silly, things like `isarray` were not functions that existed back then (we didn't have Array.isArray). `typeof [] === 'object'` in JS, so e.g. my package `is-arrayish` checked for a similar structure to an array (whereas Id guess `isarray` checked for the prototype). `isarray` failed for the `arguments` keyword, which was needed for variadics before argument spreads were added to the language I believe in ES5.

So of course they don't make sense now. But they were created for a reason. Before even Markov chains were a fad - let alone LLMs - we were trying to be as efficient as possible and maximize code reuse I stead of writing the same helper functions over and over again. That's what you're seeing.

junon··on Claude Cowork and chat are now one Claude
Noob comes from newb, which comes from newbie. Some argue it comes from "nubile" but I don't personally buy that etymology. I distinctly remember "newb" followed by "noob" but that was eons ago.

junon··on Ask HN: Fable hacked my piano, can I release the results?
Attorneys can subpoena if the court approves, as part of ongoing litigation, AFAIU (IANAL).
junon··on Ask HN: Would you read a statistics textbook?
Not sure I'd read it as-written. But I'd love a statistics book whereby the chapters are real case studies. I personally learn best when I can apply new theory to a tangible problem (not just an example problem that's been reduced to almost nothing).

However going the 'visual' route might be enough for me to pick it up.

Perhaps understanding why it exists is a good start, as opposed to flinging childish language around.

So even after the intense backlash Tantacrul saw on the GH threads, they went ahead and stuffed it full of telemetry anyway. Incredible.

I've met you (Steve) and hung out with him for a few hours after oxidize. He's none of those things, and in fact was one of the most pleasant people I've met at conferences. So not only are they brazen and vulgar allegations but I can't see even a distant parallel universe where they're even close to true.

Super bizarre comment to see on HN.

junon··on 2004 RuneScape fit a multiplayer RPG into 56k dial-up
Also no need to install or commit to a guild or clan or whatever. You could just log in, screw around for an hour or ten, and log off. Then log in again from somewhere else. It was miraculous for a kid like me.
