junkscience2017··on Her six-hour commute each day seems crazy, but her affordable rent is not
why stop there? the last "who's hiring" post made it clear to me that more and more startups are locating outside of the Bay Area entirely
junkscience2017··on Her six-hour commute each day seems crazy, but her affordable rent is not
you are obviously making your health a priority, which us key. lots of people with megacommutes end up losing what little exercise they had and are probably reducing their lifespans

seems like you are also on your way to squeezing out more WFH as time progresses

as long as your company continues to honor your arrangement, it sounds like you have it made, congrats!

junkscience2017··on Inside America’s Growing Bulletproof Clothing Industry
but why stop there, your own home would be statistically safer without a motor vehicle, alcohol or knives. and wow I hope you aren't in possession of perscription drugs, haven't you heard we are suffering an opioid epidemic?

isn't it time you thought of the children?

and as it stands I also believe one should have the right to take one's own life, so I completely discount scare tactics predicated on suicide stats

junkscience2017··on Inside America’s Growing Bulletproof Clothing Industry
we aren't interested in hearing who you think "deserves" a gun, it is a RIGHT
junkscience2017··on Inside America’s Growing Bulletproof Clothing Industry
I don't put communal values above my own family's safety, and probably a good ten million others in the US who would agree

basically a full scale gun grab would result in Civil War 2, the harm far outweighing the benefit

you can't jail us all

junkscience2017··on Inside America’s Growing Bulletproof Clothing Industry
dude...Oakland at 3am. despite all of the press Oakland is getting as this new Bohemian paradise for SF exiles, it is still...Oakland...and will remain so for years to come if not forever
junkscience2017··on Inside America’s Growing Bulletproof Clothing Industry
Canada only embraces personal liberties it can tax the shit out of

they have no motivation to embrace personal liberty at all, the government is still a constitutional monarchy...liberties are at her Majesty's discretion

junkscience2017··on Business Is Booming for America’s Survival Food King
most amateur prepping is probably more on the scale of 72 hours-1 week

there probably isn't anyone alive today in the US who is ready to be entirely self-sustaining for six months...if civil society disintegrates for six months, it likely isn't returning

junkscience2017··on Firefox is on a slippery slope
Mozilla has taken on all of the worst qualities of a modern University...ostensibly for the "public good", but really just a vehicle for the whims of a few "enlightened intellectuals" who will "save us all" (from ourselves apparently)

but hey, Mr Robot uses Kali Linux (they only show us this about twenty times per episode) so he should be fine

junkscience2017··on Why Aren’t Any Bankers in Prison for Causing the Financial Crisis? (2016)
why stop at bankers? millions of Americans flipped homes, took out loans to buy baubles and then benefited when their loan papers became lost in the resulting chaos...and almost everyone knew damn well what they were doing

the government CHOSE to bail it all out, and they will probably be doing something similar one day for Uber, Bitcoin and maybe even Tesla.

we have CHOSEN the bubble/bailout cycle

junkscience2017··on Why Aren’t Any Bankers in Prison for Causing the Financial Crisis? (2016)
most of the financial instruments expolited prior to the crash were completely legal even though they were "toxic".

Martha Stewart and Bernie Madoff are proof that actual crime can imply prison time

junkscience2017··on A journey through a land of extreme poverty: welcome to America
the US leads in inequality

go see Aboriginal communities in Canada and Australia, the story is similar including the substance abuse.

and nations which have rejected wealth polarization like Venezuela are no better off. indeed they simply have eliminated prosperity instead of poverty

Californians like to sneer from some moral high ground as if this is strictly a facet of a right wing society they've tried to "correct", despite the West Coast turning into a Hunger Games world

poverty will be part of the human condition forever. we are not bees, we are apes, it simply isn't in our code to act as a colony

junkscience2017··on As the U.S. Retreats, Canada Doubles Down on Net Neutrality
short of the 10pm news and taxpayer-funded hockey, there is basically nothing on the CBC that isn't utterly derivative...and most of the dramas literally air to zero viewers...just admit it, it's all awful and you don't watch it either
junkscience2017··on As the U.S. Retreats, Canada Doubles Down on Net Neutrality
I hold citizenship in both countries
junkscience2017··on As the U.S. Retreats, Canada Doubles Down on Net Neutrality
in reality it means paying taxes so the CBC can make a shitty Canadian version of Law And Order that no one watches

almost none of the "Canadian" content relates any national values...it is almost uniformly just garbage remakes of US shows

junkscience2017··on Stuff You Can't Say in Silicon Valley
and more:

"wikimedia has plenty of money"

"Mozilla is institutionally focused on supporting left wing views exclusively"

"all of the rich people who speak out against guns have bodyguards who carry guns. they basically don't want poor people owning guns"

"fwd.us is against Trump's wall but Mark Zuckerberg wanted to buy a city block in Palo Alto to keep the masses out"

junkscience2017··on As the U.S. Retreats, Canada Doubles Down on Net Neutrality
before you get too excited...this is the same country that mandates that some % of TV and radio content be "Canadian"
junkscience2017··on Silicon Valley homes now out of reach even for big spenders
"In-law" units are now being fast-tracked in many communities, which is a variant of this.
junkscience2017··on Silicon Valley homes now out of reach even for big spenders
Disagree. Maybe one day all of these homes will be owned by a giant corporation, but for now, they are typically owned by individuals. Not everyone who has benefited is a robber baron.
junkscience2017··on Silicon Valley homes now out of reach even for big spenders
many homeowners are electing to retain ownership of their home but rent it out. this has reduced the inventory available for purchase. many homes on my street in Los Gatos have become rentals. when my new neighbors (renters) tell me their monthly rent, my jaw drops.
junkscience2017··on German military kicks off heavy lift helicopter competition
The German military in 2017 could probably not stop an invasion by Canada. NATO on the other hand, most certainly exists to deter Russian aggression.
junkscience2017··on Is Spending Time on Social Media Bad for Us?
Is Smoking Bad for Us? (marlboro.com)
junkscience2017··on Millennials Are Screwed
...and yet they still line up to go to university to study humanities

instead, enroll in a community college program for anything construction related...in Santa Rosa, home builders are naming their prices. the same will soon happen in Ventura. in the Bay Area, construction tradespeople turn down work due to demand. there is work to be done that will earn you a comfortable living that does not require a university degree.

junkscience2017··on E Pur Si Muove
Tech liberals created this dictatorship, so enjoy sleeping in a bed of your own making Sam
junkscience2017··on U.S. Wildfire Causes 1980-2016
In the Sierra range the government is now funding a very expensive clear-cutting campaign to try to rid the forest of the 60 million estimated dead trees that have created a perpetual autumn-like landscape of golden trees. If the forests been subjected to well-regulated and sustainable harvesting, not only would the trees have been cut down as needed, but the state of California would have collected tax receipts. Instead, clear cutting is now a cost to government.
junkscience2017··on U.S. Wildfire Causes 1980-2016
almost all of the land in the Western US that has been encouraged to overgrow is held by a government.

the fires on the coast will be nothing compared to the soon-inevitable mega-fire that will reset the Federal land holdings in the Sierra range

if more of the Sierra range had been allocated for productive use, we probably would not be in this situation. the Federal government is an absentee landlord

junkscience2017··on The Silicon Valley paradox: one in four people are at risk of hunger
Why is this a surprise? California is the #1 poverty state[1], spends almost the least on education etc etc. State tax receipts mostly just rewards CalPERs members.

junkscience2017··on Does China’s J-20 rival other stealth fighters?
and NATO, in particular the USAF, can deploy in volume. The Russians field some interesting planes but then you find out they have six of them, only three flyable.
junkscience2017··on Why the gun industry should support net neutrality
it is true that they dominate the media...but the tide is turning. we need net neutrality to counter the well-funded and sometimes-anti-2nd-amendment voice of the NRA
junkscience2017··on Why the gun industry should support net neutrality
this is the inverse: a small minority (tech elites) squelching popular opinion. owning a gun IS objectively popular in the US (there are more guns than people)...even in Silicon Valley. at my current startup roughly half of the developers visit the range regularly. at my local range I always see people with Google and Facebook garb. Bass Pro Shop in San Jose sells out of bulk 9mm ammo within hours of putting it on the floor.
