If either side is compromised it is difficult to reissue (e.g. if they are undercover in another country). The beauty of public keys is that they can be revoked and the other side can use your new key without you having to transport/transmit a private key in peril.
junkbit··on Bullshit
Some of The Muppets videos went viral on YouTube in the past few years.

Other short form work also tends to go viral, YouTube is often credited with rejuvenating SNL, despite NBCs insistence on taking down every clip

People are brands too. I almost only watch talk show interviews in clip form.

junkbit··on Launching the Kindle Fire was a mistake
That would take 25% of the per unit price for a start. Then there's the lack of control.

junkbit··on 23 Year Old Mark Andreessen Explains the Web (29:55)
Hard to believe that was the same year as Pulp Fiction. 1994 doesn't seem that long ago.

Fascinating snapshot in time.

I think we can forgive him some buzzwords as he is addressing a marketing audience.

junkbit··on Estimate your English vocabulary size
Bananas ARE berries, so are watermelons and tomatoes. But strawberries and raspberries are not berries.

Berries have seeds on the inside; a strawberry's seeds are on the outside, and raspberries are little clusters they are called something else. It's a famous quiz question in the UK :)

That's the whole point of OAuth; so that you can sign in without giving them your password. You can revoke the permissions of any 3rd party in your twitter settings page.
junkbit··on It's China's turn to wrestle with a pile of bad debt
I think most of the world's debt is privately held. For instance the UK is the third largest owner of US debt after China and Japan, but we ourselves have a massive public debt.
junkbit··on A Big Surprise from the Edge of the Solar System

Instant On really benefits from the fast sequential times and random cache hits from the low latency/high IOPS. I would imagine there is a lot of paging on a low memory machine.

The first generation macbook air users said that the SSD made up for the weak CPU in day to day use.

junkbit··on Why is git named git?
Git is a polite way of saying bastard before 9pm on TV in the UK, e.g. You lucky git. They also use it in Ireland and down under.
junkbit··on Windows 7 SP1 is out
For a companies that sells big iron servers the Dell, IBM and HP websites don't inspire confidence.
junkbit··on Google is testing a cleaner, leaner UI on Google.com
Yes encrypted.google.com is really fast, it even has google instant, but I had to turn it off as my default choice in chrome because it won't let you search images. Video and news work but not images.
junkbit··on GTK+ 3.0.0 released
The release announcement says that Gtk3 has switched to Cairo to draw the toolkit behind the scenes:

Cairo drawing throughout. GDK no longer wraps the antiquated X11 drawing API; we've made a clean break and exclusively rely on cairo for all our drawing needs now.

As for Clutter, the OpenGL based canvas, Gnome-Shell (aka the Gnome 3 desktop UI) uses cluttter throughout. The new window manager is called Mutter which is a fork of Metacity to use Clutter for hardware acceleration and all the panels and other desktop UI are also rendered this way.

junkbit··on HTML5 Is An Oncoming Train, Native App Development An Oncoming Rocket Ship
ChromeDeck is pretty great. It's an HTML5 TweetDeck app in the Chrome Web Store that feels almost native. Multicolumn layout for your lists, inline video / photos, and desktop notifications with sound. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/hbdpomandigafcibbm...

junkbit··on Canadians Just Became World's Biggest Internet Losers.
Cheap hard disks have grown faster than the last mile of internet connections over the years, creating a bottleneck. I think people's expectations are tied to the large disks and the files that they hold.
junkbit··on I will miss the old Y Combinator
He has a self-deprecating charm. An everyman; like Homer Simpson. He's also like that snake-bite guy form Australia with a hundred scars who says 'give it here lads, I'll see if it's poisonous'

Occasionally you will see him get worked up and stand his ground but he's so enthusiastic about everything new and shiny that it becomes infectious. A little naive perhaps, but his optimism for technology and the future is a light in dark places.
