junipertea··on Show HN: Screenshot Hero - iPhone app to make all photos text searchable
But developers do and they make free apps on the app store
junipertea··on How hard can it be to move our developer account to our new not-for-profit?
Why not give existing users a promo code to unlock the republished app? Like the games tend to do.
junipertea··on Science made astonishing progress and was hijacked by those with an axe to grind
They are probably referring to this: https://www.forbes.com/sites/emilywillingham/2015/08/06/a-co...

Note it’s disproven in the forbes article.

junipertea··on Ants trapped for years in an old bunker
Eating meat does not imply bad
junipertea··on Leaving Apple
After they lose too much capacity you will have to replace them. However it's still better to replace only the battery instead of the whole device.
junipertea··on Stop Explaining Black Box Models for High Stakes Decisions
Similarity can be a learnable metric or user defined.
junipertea··on Singapore to become first country banning ads on sugary drinks
They also hopefully decreased the number people that need them
junipertea··on All paid targeting options available on social media platforms
I don't know about fullstory, what is wrong with it?
junipertea··on Hong Kong protest safety app banned from iOS store
What difference would it make? Apple and other companies follow the laws of countries they operate in, regardless of whether they produce there or not.
junipertea··on Kik, once valued at $1B, is to be closed
You put cash in a bank.
junipertea··on Apple expands parts access to more independent repair businesses
That's moving the goalposts.
junipertea··on HarmonyOS is Huawei’s Android alternative for smartphones and smart home devices
In general making an OS from scratch wasn't very successful even with Samsung (#2 maker with considerable market share and a track record) completely failed with Tizen, so a relatively younger and smaller chinese company succeeding seems dubious. Of course I would be glad for a competing mobile OS, but I would wait for benchmarks and take security statements with a grain of salt. Also, it might be completely different departments at Huawei but there's the Cisco router firmware debacle (https://www.wsj.com/articles/SB10485560675556000)
junipertea··on Work on production line of Boeing 737 Max ‘not adequately funded’
How do you know all the previous planes have no issues at all? The only way you truly know is the track record and we do need to give the Max or its successor the benefit of doubt at some point. What's the point of having regulations of we don't believe in them anyway and depend on feelings? Of course, the regulations allowed 300+ people to die, but that's a thing to be fixed and improved.
junipertea··on Sony's mini air conditioner can fit in your pocket
it's on your back
junipertea··on AI is supercharging the creation of maps around the world
Classification makes sense, because you do a linear (or kernel) combination of the input and squash it using sigmoid to get a probability of a class. For segmentation you output a pixel mask so you would have a NxNx3 vector to predict 1 class for 1 pixel and then you would have to do it for all pixels so you'd have to encode the position as well. Alternatively, if you take a unique weight for each position you end up with get single FC layer with NxNx3 inputs and NxN outputs (N^4 parameters). I guess for me it's hard to imagine doing segmentation "back then" and I find it very fascinating.
junipertea··on AI is supercharging the creation of maps around the world
How do you give a class to each pixel in an image using a linear classifier in a way that uses the surrounding pixels as context/input? I'm genuinely curious! You are right about the data, it's expensive to make and startups based on satelite imagery tend to keep them as it's their main advantage.
junipertea··on India Launches Chandrayaan-2 Moon Mission on Second Try
Please share the article then.
junipertea··on In Denmark's Train Dream, the Next Big City Is Only an Hour Away
I've been on trains in 6 different countries. (n=1 etc.) They all are either very expensive (compared to buses, in some cases even compared to planes). Often they are subsidied on top.
junipertea··on Multilingual Neural Machine Translation in the Wild
"People working on machine translation" also release their findings and sometimes even code for the benefit of everyone.
junipertea··on One player spent 10 years exploring every corner of Eve Online
People with low education have the opportunity to work an physically demanding low pay job regardless of gender. Women are forced out of high paying intelectual job because they can't be one of the Bros
junipertea··on Apple Moves Mac Pro Production to China
in 10 years that's a $1m. Even if you bought a mac pro every year that's not particularly significant. Of course, it is a lot of money by itself and if you are smart about it you can save a lot, but the value is there for other people in not building a custom PC with cooling.
junipertea··on Jony Ive to form independent design company with Apple as client
You can. Check voice control.
junipertea··on Support for right-to-repair laws slowly grows
It hurts Apple brand
junipertea··on Pictures show cracks in Ayrshire nuclear reactor
People use the same argument for solar and wind energy; however the goal is for future panels/uranium to be created/mined using non-coal energy
junipertea··on Why aren’t more companies remote-first?
Because I assume they have a headquarters which would be empty. Firing high-cost of living, high expertise employees to hire new ones (might be senior level, but not well versed in the problem) does not sound wise.
junipertea··on Amazon shareholders reject facial recognition ban
Wouldn't it be the same as a police officer having a board of wanted people on his desk and (mistakenly) thought a person in a mall to be one of those? He'd check their papers (sorry, I'm European) due to his hunch and decide?

I believe there is no better way to identify wanted criminals at scale, do we want to comb the streets with policemen and "harass" 10x more people in hoes of finding them?

It's not a death penalty to be checked and bothering additional 3200 people in the whole country is a ok tradeoff to find wanted person in my opinion.

It feels like you want to cripple the way police looks for criminals because they don't act very kind towards suspects. Maybe police is the problem and not surveillance?

junipertea··on How the United States threatens our security
While I agree about our lack of (usable) search engine, I disagree on your second claim. Europe has a strong background in cybersecurity. Kaspersky is Russian (to be fair, not EU), Avast is Czech, ESET is Slovak, AVG was also Czech before bought by Avast. All of them are popular antivirus programs used today.
junipertea··on Firms That Promised Ransomware Decryption Almost Always Just Pay the Hackers
In this case criminals.
junipertea··on Tesla increases price of all Model 3 variants, even ‘off-the-menu’ base model
They tend to lower the prices instead of increasing them to not go bankrupt.
junipertea··on Mail a Letter Online
I wrote a letter to a friend on the website because I honestly thought it would be amusing. But then at the address page I kinda stopped, because I didn't actually feel very comfortable with writing my friend's address and full name on a random webpage. I wonder if there is anything that can alleviate this paranoia?
