On this bug-tracker, every discussions are called "bug".
juloo··on An enhancement request I submitted to Bugzilla 15 years ago was just closed
I've been using Vimium since I use firefox (for around 3 years). It's annoying that Vimium can no longer control the browser UI and is limited on some pages (New Tab, mozilla.org) but this is necessary for security.
juloo··on Upper limits on partial Dyson spheres in the Milky Way
Surely a Dyson sphere would not emit what we naively expect. Look at us, we can speculate about these and even try to spot them but are millennia away from building one.

What if the external shield of the sphere would be artificially heated to 4000K or higher ? Completely invisible.

juloo··on WebAssembly techniques to speed up matrix multiplication
An other way is WebGL.
juloo··on A high-dimensional sphere spilling out of a high-dimensional cube
Numberphile has a video on exactly this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mceaM2_zQd8

I love this channel :)

juloo··on NASA spacecraft ‘touches’ the Sun for the first time ever
Or 6 Gigameters.
juloo··on How to build a low-tech website? (2018)
What does low tech means in this context ? It's still a computer, with complication on top: solar panels, battery.

All the hardware they use requires some energy to be built, the network consumes a lot of energy too.

How does this compare to a VPS server at a cloud provider or using the grid electricity (no solar panel) ?

I'd expect individual VMs to use less energy compared to a decicated computer.

Is it really greener to stop using the grid electricity but instead buy a small solar panel ? Surely that'll be less green than the grid 20 years in the future.

The article contains many sources but doesn't compare other solutions. 2.5 watts is impressive, though.

juloo··on Where have all the insects gone?
Most ? I mean, I have a single outdoor light, above my front door.
juloo··on Gmail password first character is case insensitive on mobile device
The server could hash again the hashed password sent by the client. Especially if the client use an insecure hash algorithm (no secret salt for example).

I feel like if the client always hash passwords as soon as it is typed (the javascript never sees the unhashed password), no one would notice. (except some with crazy password rules that would disallow a hash-looking password)

juloo··on You don't need to burn off your fingertips (and other biometric myths)
The actual reason is to make you practice your password so you don't forget. You might scratch your finger or the sensor might get dirty or break. Biometric in (current) phones is convenience, not security.
juloo··on You don't need to burn off your fingertips (and other biometric myths)
2020. They just make a virtual 3D model of you from all the data they collected and stream it directly to the device. 2022. They can now engrave fingertips on paper.
juloo··on The Grayness of the Origin of Life
> despite arguably being a physical state change and not chemistry per se.

It remove salt from the water but more importantly move it to the top of mountains, which adds energy into the system. Chemistry happens when the water disolves sediments and carry them back to the oceans.

juloo··on Google Internal Comics
There's https://bonkersworld.net/ with a working feed. Last entry Nov 2020.
juloo··on Google Internal Comics
I would have preferred links labelled "next" and "prev" so I could navigate with Vimium's >> key.
juloo··on Internet in a Box
Wikipedia can be browsed offline: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Database_download#Of...
juloo··on A quest for safe text formatting API
Printf is type-safe in Haskell and OCaml. The format-string is not a regular string, it must be literal and is type-checked specifically.
juloo··on Introduction to Dwebsites (2020)
* on Ethereum

There are probably much more content added to IPFS, zeronet and other projects I don't know about. (yes we can host websites on IPFS: https://docs.ipfs.io/concepts/dnslink/)

juloo··on Useful and useless code comments
I always try to write a comment that say "why" the following code is needed or what concept it implements rather than what it does in details.

I would do

    // We allow scrolling in two directions
    hScrollBar = new JScrollBar(scrollBar, HORIZONTAL);
    add(hScrollBar, BorderLayout.SOUTH);
    vScrollBar = new JScrollBar(JScrollBar.VERTICAL);
    add(vScrollBar, BorderLayout.EAST);
    caretX = 0;
    caretY = 0;
    caretMemX = null;
(I don't have much inspiration in this specific example)
juloo··on Cool URIs don't change (1998)
One of the things that hype me about IPFS is that URIs can't change. Resources are immutable and the URI is only the hash of the content.

juloo··on Archaeologists discover and crack a thousand-year-old chicken egg
I wonder how many things are still stored uncracked waiting for future measuring instruments.
juloo··on New browser signal could make cookie banners obsolete
Why do they still think we want tracking cookies ? The ad industry should prepare for a future with no tracking instead of trying to survive with ever shadier tricks, IMO.

This won't work:

- browsers other than Chrome will say "no tracking" by default, tracking companies won't like that

- websites will ignore this, this will be known and people will be upset even more

- more javascript when we want less

juloo··on Elevator Saga: An elevator programming game (2015)
It's annoying that it doesn't highlight syntax errors. It's even worse than that because it's intercepting the syntax error for logging purpose and loses any informations. You get unrelated errors in the app's code.
juloo··on NVMe is not a hard disk
That would be magnetic tapes.
juloo··on How to Make Your Landing Pages Look Like a Design Team Was Behind It
Hacker News is not readable for me. Text is too small, the button for folding the comment tree is impossible to hit on mobile. I'm reading this website with 150% zoom and the browser window that is 50% the width of my screen.

Nevermind 16 or 12, fixed size is to be avoided, from 2010: https://www.w3.org/QA/Tips/font-size

juloo··on The memory models that underlie programming languages (2016)
The ownership is part of the type-checker and disappears at runtime. At runtime (and in memory) you are left with C's memory model (pointers but also can nest records) and with the other things you mention.
juloo··on The memory models that underlie programming languages (2016)
The "lisp" section seems to conflate "object graphs" and object-oriented programming. It talks about classes while talking about garbage collection and before mentioning "object-oriented". Lisps, Haskell and ML have different model than the other languages in the list and don't have classes, objects are usually arrays of pointers with no special fields. Also, hash tables are usually implemented inside the language.
juloo··on If you sell a house these days, the buyer might be a pension fund
Median != mean. Multiplying it literally means "The value of this particular house I know nothing about times 66 millions".
juloo··on I wrote a linker everyone can understand
GC traverses graph, linker traverses graph. GC = linker. I disagree. Also if that's the description of a "smart linker", what is a "dumb linker" then?
juloo··on Employees are quitting instead of giving up working from home
For me, the main benefit is I can choose where I live. There is not many developer positions available outside of big cities, with WFH I get to choose both where and for which company I work. Living in a big city was a bad experience for me, I would quit my job immediately if I were asked to give up WFH.

Commute time, expense and risks are other benefits but others are talking about it already.

juloo··on My oldest kid made this to raise awareness for composting
Composting is nice if there is a dedicated collection of it (like in some part of Italy) and if it is actually used (eg. not landfill/burned anyway).

Doing compost at home for yourself is not working in general because most people live in an apartment: - People won't know what to do with it and will throw it away. - A large amount of moisty stuff in a small room with bad ventilation.

That's my experience of seeing city people doing it.
