juloo··on Vegan cheese has quietly but steadily infiltrated mainstream supermarket shelves
As a french, I'm sometimes offended by what Americans call "cheese".

If I'd wanted to make a non-dairy pizza, I'd just remove the cheese and find other interesting ingredients. The world is too vast and beautiful to eat what the Americans call cheese.

juloo··on Flu has disappeared worldwide during the Covid pandemic
> yet we have not seen a year-round flu.

We had. And it may have killed 3% to 5% of the world population in about 2 years: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_flu

That's also why we are so afraid of this one and constantly monitor it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avian_influenza

juloo··on Truly unified inbox – BlackBerry got it right and nobody has since
I've used "Disa unified messenger" for years. I've stopped because I've changed which services I use and the app supports only a few.

Years later, I still greatly miss it.

juloo··on Neutron stars may be bigger than expected, measurement of lead nucleus suggests
There might be naked singularities in case of a rapidly rotating black hole. The singularity would have a donut shape and might be outside of the event horizon. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naked_singularity

Of course, this is very theoretical and we don't actually expect that to exist.

juloo··on Neutron stars may be bigger than expected, measurement of lead nucleus suggests
You move asymptotically slower from the point of view of the particle falling in the black hole. From outside the black hole, the falling particle should fall into the black hole at a speed close to the speed of light. (but we can't observe that from the outside)

The image an outsider would see "printed" on the black hole has nothing to do with where the falling particle is.

juloo··on Neutron stars may be bigger than expected, measurement of lead nucleus suggests
As a particle, you continuously accelerate even after the event horizon (which you don't realize). Immediately after you passed the horizon, any photon you can send won't ever leave the black hole.

What outside observers will see "frozen" is the instant just before you cross the horizon. A bit like if your image 1ms before you cross the horizon will be seen by the observers years after, your image 1µs before will be seen millions of years after, etc...

juloo··on Show HN: An encoding of the UK's self-isolation rules in Prolog
I was expecting

    should_isolate(_).
meaning always "yes", but it's actually encoding rules.
juloo··on Tmux lets you select and copy text with your keyboard
I switched from using tmux to using only Vim a year ago and I'm not looking back. I'm opening an instance of Vim per projet and that's it. I use the :term command for running any CLI tools that I haven't integrated to Vim yet and I can use normal and visual modes on their output. I'd recommand using tmux over your terminal's splits/tabs but I'd definitely recommand dropping tmux if you are nesting something smarter in it (emacs, vim).
juloo··on Firefox 85
These requests are used to detect WIFI portals.
juloo··on Major Flaws of Human Thinking
"people like to", "some people are", "People are", "Humans are". Is this number 1. ?
juloo··on Security Flaws in Adobe Acrobat Reader Allow Gaining Root on macOS Silently
Everyone is talking about Adobe but that's not the right question to me. - Why the PDF reader has root rights ? Apple should never have allowed this. - How a programming error in a third party software can cause this ? Seems like a bug in macOS

If you can answer positively to the first question, burn your computer now.

juloo··on China lands Chang'e-4 on far side of Moon
It's the L2 point in the earth-moon system, it is different from the earth-sun L2 point. And yes, the satellite follow the moon in its orbit, the point in the L2 point.
