julie1··on Outsourced Jobs Are No Longer Cheap, So They're Being Automated
We are getting paid peanuts compared to the unfair captation of our values through Intellectual Property.

Let me be clear: we are undervalued by our companies, and overvalued when sold to the customers. Have you looked at apples/googles net (official) margin? 20+% Stuff like Danone are 5%. And They have incentive to underestimate their profit for paying less taxes.

A coder is like 40% ROI once you set your monopole.

The only merit of a boss? Being bornt wealthy, and then all he is doing is walking into the open like Riquet with the tuft. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riquet_with_the_Tuft

He can act as a jerk, be an asshole, but everybody gives him the credit of the employees real value, and of course the real benefits.

julie1··on Outsourced Jobs Are No Longer Cheap, So They're Being Automated
People are not tired of this kind of FUD?

Whatever you do good devs are a limited resource, and all that is made to try to walk around the problem worsen it:

- outsourcing ? => You have to compensate in supervision and you lose in quality. (Indians are not bad coders, but there is something called the Babel tower effect that creates a lot of signal perturbation/costs)

- agile? => Trying to cut on correctness and detailed specifications to ship value faster result in insecure useless softwares. Ofc a startup owner does not care of the sustainability of his product because he will cash out a lot of $$ before the problem will happen. But what about the customers and the economy relying on it?

- Web as an UI because web dev is less expensive than GUI devs/shipping? GUI devs then where making atrocious bugs because they were clueless on asynchronuous coding (reentrant code) and money related data still needs to be transactional (transactional is a property that is exclusive of distributed). Devs that understand this class of problems are still few, and Web dev is causing even more problems.

- The Cloud? It has non linear costing! If you x2 your customers you cannot predict your pricing unless you make fat margins, and swap KPEX and slowly linear OPEX for strongly growing non linear OPEX is kind of totally mathematically irrational (except for the one doing fat margins).

- Containers? In 1999 the problem of the GUI was already the dependency Hell. Well, now instead of solving the satisfiability of dependencies (NP complete problem) in one closed system you do it on a set of M containers that still requires internal KSAT solving (yes instead of solving one KSAT, you solve N KSAT coupled to M KSAT). (so we created the DevOps and more security holes!)

When automation can replace people, it means the industry does not requires skilled people. That is not the case.

Can't you see there is a trivial contradiction in the thesis of this article?

Seriously this insanity never ends? IT industry is just bullshiting the rest of the economy to sustain its totally insane model and paying our daily wages.

I would be happy of this waste of money (I am a still a coder) if only people were not starving in the streets and our economies were not suffering and thus creating instabilities all around the world. I long for the internet 2.0 bubble to explode soon so that we can get back to an economy that profits to everyone not only the IT crowd.

julie1··on Ask HN: Developers above 35 – what are you doing?
42 happily being a grunt dev (front/back in web) ... after being consultant, project manager, my own boss, sysadmin and failing quite some times.

I sometimes wish to do something real for improving humanity well being, but all my attempts failed so far :)

I am telling people that if you want to make money, you should avoid competitive fields and since crisis is there, and devs are still excessively well paid, it gives an incentive for all kind of people tied by whatever pressure (social, debts, financial) to become a coder to make money fast, and for bosses to put more pressure.

If things worsen, I think I am gonna try to propose the funding of my own sect on kickstarter (rael is my model), or coin the term factorer instead of developer which purpose would be to decrease the costs of having stupidly non reliable/deterministic technologies (mongoDB, hadoop, cloud, systemd, USB, oauth2) and excessive costs (big data that are useless for making money, the costs of cloud that are non linear thus non predictable...) to bring back some sanity to this world and more money to the workers really add values to our existence. Or maybe, just stay what I am : a troll :)

julie1··on Belkin Explains Why Its Routers Stopped Working
1) there is still no explanatation for the rational of doing so, and the origin of the black out ! 2) there is still no valid reason to add a useless point of failure. 3) talking about security, the continuity of service is AS important as anything else (imagine you had two belkins set up for redundancy and multihoming, because internet is used to check credentials, you have a loss of a critical services. A useless SPOF IS a security risk! ) 4) It is not Belkin role to make sure «internet» is available and take measure when not working. A router needs an IP connectivity including a DNS resolver, these are clearly checks that are the ISPs responsability. 5) there is no arm in letting a router not being able to resolve a DNS server (they can be statically configured on the hosts or by a DHCPd server, routers at best acts as a DNS cache and they are less efficient than tons of other solution even a stupid dnsmasq). 6) it means blackholing the IP to the cloud of Belkin is an efficient way to disconnect any user from the internet using their router. Is it a feature made for Russia, China and USA (I mean any place where privacy is considered a crime)?

Clearly Belkin has been bricking their gears when they are not connected to internet. Why? Why have a killswitch of the internet?

I cannot see any good reason for spending THAT much money in terms of investment and recurring cost. Someone planned this feature, and found smart to spend recuring money on obviously unneeded feature.

Facts don't add up. Companies are here to make money. They spent a hell lot of money to insert and plan and release this feature in their equipment. What do they gain of bricking any devices not able to contact their «cloud»?

julie1··on Ask HN: How do I write good documentation?
http://shop.oreilly.com/product/9780596001735.do chapter 7.

Don't focus on the Perl language, just on their best practices for documentation. the guideline in terms of content are totally relevant for any language/developers and polished by practice.

Even if I chose to switch from Perl to python, I still miss Perl in terms of module distribution/testing/documentation.

Perl, and Perl community, I miss you, and I value what you learnt me :)

I advocate for people to be open minded and take good ideas without prejudice on their origins.

printer are bloatware. Old men recipe: new corporate printer tends to have a lpd daemon running accepting postscript (60%). Use rlpr and send your file directly bypassing the spooler. nmap on ldp port my help.
julie1··on Not a bash bug
So an ENV is a dict string => string with this feature we have a dict that point to functions. Basically it is an object. It could even has been used for passing structured data with their own functional compiler. Or objects with stateless (lambda) functions/methods usable for parallel computing.

Oh fuck, this feature is a wonderfull feature in a controled environment for passing objects/code over a simple octet stream. With safe computer paradigm.

We could have done RPC easily with xinetd + and shell scripts. With PAM we could have even be able to use kerberos to control the security...

I could have done lots of things... I still can ...

Bash I still hate you for not documenting this, and more YOU Advanced Bash Scripting guide for being so awesome and missing that. ABS you failed me. http://www.tldp.org/LDP/abs/html/functions.html

julie1··on Ask HN: What's the best company to buy an SSL certificate from?
SSL certs are an untrusty ransom based on the tyranny of bad UI.

FF, and chrome and IE are totally ok with login/pass passing in clear over http, which is wrong. But when you don't have a certificate signed with by one of the root certificate in your wallet it screams to death. (Which is totally in hierarchy of risk WTF).

Your wallet contains organization that should have been shut down according to the rules of SSL: we normally cannot trust any authority that even once or for good reasons emitted a joker certificate to make a MITM (or helped people doing so). https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2138565

In your web browser default certificates list you find microsoft. in 2007, they put in IE for the Ben Ali gvt a special certificate to be able to do a MITM on the tunisian opponents. (ofc those using ff would see a warning).

MS did not emit the certificate, but for them who can issue SSL certificates that's clear not right to provide a SSL joker root certificate in its web browser used for MITM (without your nice little icon you care about to get red).

MS is still in my list of trustful SSL certificates. How can you trust them. If they could betray once for a few money (tunisia had less money as a state than MS, google, whatever country) they have incentive to redo it again.

Knowing MS has gone through the death penalty, other SSL issuers can now have an incentive to do the same.

SSL central certificate are NOT to be trusted anymore. We have proofed once a company in our "trustfull" wallets betrayed without consequence. So betraying is OK.

My recommandations: - Ever dane (but that is a combinat) or the new technology google is secretly working on (maybe mozilla too), - set a cookie on http landing page ssl_cert_on=bool - if not present redirect to http://www/my_cert - give a link to your self signed certificate on your domain so that your user add it its wallet securely (must be a js or a MIME extension to set so that IE/FF/google open at the "add this certificate to your wallet page" - correct the world and FF/Chrome/IE mess by providing a way for the user to read the mess of the X509 certificate (for which domain this cert is valid, the fingerprint) - correct the world another time by explaining to your customers it is normal they should not trust this special web page or this certificate and give them links for them to check your allegation, (knowledge and tools) - provide another secured way to access your cert fingerprint (DNS SEC TXT record for instance, snail mails, flying carrier, PGP mails...) - and make a rant on how much security UI/UX is so much sucking and poorly thought that it is the major security hole nowadays and how all security guru giving us advice on how to code to "secure" code should be regarded as cons that should be imprisoned.

Then, now that you corrected the whole "what gone wrong with central authoriy"'s mess, you can very easily make your free self signed cert secure certificates and sleep on your 2 ears because your customers are now understanding security the right way.

If you understood nothing of the text above, just buy a normal certificate to whoever you want. You will be "safe" according to the green icon, and this is all that matters in the real world.

julie1··on Why Is Peter Thiel Pessimistic About Technological Innovation?
My parents could go on vacation, enjoy life and come back from work with a clear break.

I am to be a coder, whose dreams are constantly polluted by solving work problem, uncertain of my future, hardly going on vacations, and I should see a progress in the fact my parents could be important and it was normal they had a life and be "reasonably" reachable, and I am not important and have a sort of intrusive technology not leaving room for a life out of work.

I would gladly trade it for my parent's generation condition of life, all included.

Our societies priorities are really not well adjusted at my opinion. But I need to feed my loved one and myself, so I shut my mouth, and work in this mad system, like everyone...but it piss me off to be still young enough to love life with her, and can only tell her we can hope we will be able to do it later ... eventually.

I care not about iphone, because I am more likely than you to become poor. I want cheap food, cheap energy, and healthy time to enjoy life with the ones I care for.

My only wealth are my friends (and family) and my friends especially are being crushed by the exaggerated amount of work we push in industry like banking, advertisement, distraction industry and the media. What do we do to save the world? We code awesome softwares to have the feeling we help humanity.

Yeah. We improve humanity for the better good. Pushing a rock hard because you are scared, does not make it go in the right direction if you never put an eye on the road.

He is talking about lutherianism and calvinism (scnadinavia, north germany, early «pilgrims»).

julie1··on JSON Web Tokens
just for the record there are some serious critics of oauth http://hueniverse.com/2012/07/26/oauth-2-0-and-the-road-to-h...

I find jwt a tinge too complex. On the other hand no solution for unified AAA exists on web that makes sense: HTTP is a stateless protocol.

I sometimes wish people wake up from the Oauth insanity and realize using a statefull TCP connection would drop the sessions problem.

Why use stateful protocol (Oauth) for a stateless protocol (HTTP) over a statefull protocol (TCP)?

Emitting token lasting more than 1 hour impersonating the user in an hostile environment seems quite a lot of risk (mathematically speaking)

I must be a grumpy old dev, but I kind of hear the oauth sweet song of easy secure cross security token like sirens trying to seduce me for crashing my ship on the havoc of security.

Security is a mine field. One step out of the «right way» and boom, it does not work while burning 25% of your CPU power, an hidden tax.

Oauth protocol is a multi-dimensionnal maze designed under LSD at my opinion, and I kind of feel it unsafe to take.

julie1··on Ask HN: Why can't programmers get along with business type people?
Ethic. First.

People constructing are accountable for being able to build on time (announcing fair informations). Constructing/building a product (not only coding) require the most accurate information possible and accountability. People are paid mostly with a (lower than business) fixed amount of money.

People selling relies on assymetry of informations. They are paid on commission (often not on the benefits but a percentage of the gross sell).

The business are hired with an incentive to lie, the builders are fired if they do so.

Business makes all the more money that coding costs less, and vice versa. And both coders and business are understood to be valuable and listened to. This is a classical conflict of interest.

If you had the classical Babel tower problem, some social origin issues (business schools are expensive), and what could be considered an unfair share of the values regarding the costs for persons (remember a coder lose all IPs on its works and his paid less than a business person making money on their relation ships that they are «free» to keep), than you have also a very simple marxist doxa (know how to make money) vs praxein (how to do) problem of unfair repartition of value. And according to marx it results in conflict between proletarian (coders) vs capitalists (business).

To sum up, take whatever explication you want it is a stupid logical conflict: a power struggle (that need no symmetry) because as pointed here and there by other contributors the incentive/goals are differents but they share the future/resources of the same company.

julie1··on The State of NAT Traversal
NAT may kill kittens, but IPv6 is killing polar bears massively.

I recommend the lecture of this: https://www.nanog.org/meetings/nanog46/presentations/Sunday/... (deployment document of ipv6) then proceed to the glitches section.

I recommend reading nanog mailing list for having a glimpse on the added complexity of dealing with IPv6 in real life.

Just peak random mails, it pops up once a month. Like for instance provider turning to LS (Large Scale) NATing or Carrier Grade NATING rather than going IPv6 for rationnale reason: IPv6 engineers are hard to find and LSNAT (+dual stack eventually) since China has proven valid has both a way to handle the scarcity of IPv4 addresses and the need to control user's traffic.

http://mailman.nanog.org/pipermail/nanog/2014-July/068892.ht...

IPv6 is not bad, it is kind of bloated and requires a tinge more training than IPv4. Plus there are the concerns about privacy (but some IPV6 guru will come up with ULA or another obscure trick. It is IPv6 realm: everything is clear on the paper but is seems confusing to quite a few real life engineers since it requires a lot of RFC stacking in the brain)

julie1··on Why Crunch Mode Doesn't Work (2005)
The bigger the burn in, the bigger the burn out. The more often the burn in, the bigger the burn out.

If you think burnn-outs are cool, I can package you all of mine with their consequences in a small box and I can send them to you by mail. I'd be delighted, truly. Such a shame it is not possible.

And crunch are just burnin, the maniacal addictive phase before the depressive one. I am not sure living like unbalanced junkies should be considered a good idea. We are not politicians yet.

julie1··on Why Crunch Mode Doesn't Work (2005)
Well, it 48 hours a week vs 60 jours is the secret of the success of british & USA vs Germany during WWI :

* WWI = death by explosive * over work == more defaults => more of your soldiers killed less of theirs, more money spent * so british army edicted a ban on overwork ~ 1917 followed by USA.

The question is does it matter more to produce the most defective products, or to produce stuff that works?

julie1··on Software estimation considered harmful? (2011)
If you don't rant how do you learn from your mistakes?

It makes you reconsider what went wrong like The Mythical Man's Month (tools considered harmful aka silver bullets) by F Brooks the project manager that nearly killed IBM and OS360 is such an example.

Coding is about creativity and innovation. Not about respecting the authority. It is a hard mix of conservatism (standing on the giants' shoulders) and like the other giants ... to rant.

At one point the best developers new ideas are rants ex robe pike vs Unix (plan9, Go) (all his rants against unix (see cat) are a very good source of knowledge for unix devs)

And rants are always instructive when done by great person.

* http://harmful.cat-v.org/software/ (I learned a lot with http://harmful.cat-v.org/software/symlinks http://harmful.cat-v.org/software/dynamic-linking/ ) * computer for cynics on youtube (a rant against computer industry in general)

“It’s a curious thing about our industry: not only do we not learn from our mistakes, we also don’t learn from our successes.” — Keith Braithwaite

julie1··on Ask HN: I was hired and unhired in 2 weeks, for no reason
Life sux. And being a nice person with good intentions does not mean you are unlikely to do no harm to anyone.

That is the major reason why I first learnt to avoid «charismatic/nice» employers; I was fed up of being f*cked in the ass nicely. Then I matured and learnt to trust but check.

julie1··on What ORMs have taught me: just learn SQL
Well I love SqlAlchemy, and DBIx::Class

I also like true RDBMS.

The most important feature of RdbMs is the Relationships for me and the «on delete/on update» combined with FKI and constraint. It makes possible to have complex in relationship that are consistent and that can be added/removed without destroying the consistency of the state in the DB. And most ORM only people I know overlook this part, which is a must for transactionality. Your data stay consistent other time.

Also, people tend to think querying with ORM are cool. They often query DB as random access record. However for me complex query are more like intersection, symmetric difference, union of records based on their joins. And SQL is so good at it.

ORM can have hook on transactions, making it possible to call a webservice on commit and rollback.

ORM can have mixins to help with having password handled carefully.

So, what is wrong at my opinion, is neither SQL nor ORM but the idea that only one is enough to learn.

julie1··on Attacked By Thugs (2004)
Well, knowledge does not jump from written media to brain, else, everyone would be doing their own molotov cocktail (I still prefer the Joliot-Curie), TNT (pretty easy, we learnt it at school while doing mono nitration of toluene), nuclear bomb ... that is what makes the world quite safe in fact.

I was forced to borrow from the adult library when I was 11 because I had already read everything and I was too demanding. But I guess it was not enough :)

But I don't think hidden social rules are taught in books. Behaving «socially correctly» is not taught either. Which so far has been quite my main problem.

julie1··on Attacked By Thugs (2004)
I think you are right that the situation is so polarized it seems impossible to fix. And every one is indeed distrusting everyone on a per community basis (sex, sexuality, money, culture, religion...) with so many communities that they even distrust themselves amongst communities.

But, I am very optimistic by nature, so I have good hopes for the future.

To be honest, I was not bornt an accepting person without prejudice. I might have been a little obnoxious teen with a lot of prejudices (it goes without saying I was kind of racist without noticing it). But, I think education and experiencing what I lived where not quite bad actually.

It opened my eyes, and made me quite a better man. If it happens to me, it can happen to every one eventually.

So let's hope together :)

julie1··on Attacked By Thugs (2004)
Sorry, at the time my ancestor Isaac Aaron asked for the freedom of religion for the jewish people in Sweden, I think he did not quite care what was the politically correct way of saying jews had no right to practice their religion.

And I don't make a parallel on the political situation (you know you can read something to the end) but on the social AND topological situation: lack of mixity between two populations + reduced geographically speaking capacity of moving for the poorest + obvious signs of discrimination = what we call in our slang ghettoisation)

I suggest that the political situation just aggravates a socio economical situation that already have the same effects everywhere in the world.

julie1··on Attacked By Thugs (2004)
It has been studied: http://www.cnrs.fr/inshs/recherche/facies.htm

Criteria by order of importance: colour of skins mainly, sex, dressing.

julie1··on Ask HN: How many hours can you productively program a day?
It depends of your health and your sleep quality.

In good condition I exactly say like jos82.

When in pain (I have a back neck pain killing me since 2 weeks and it seems related to my working position) It is unsustainbale to focus even on other tasks than programming for more than 5 hours a day and sometimes less (like 3).

When going into burn-in (like mbenjaminsmith, or Daishiman) I can focus up to 8-10h+ a day, the problem is the burn-out: Months with reduced concentration and almost a negative productivity in quality and quantity some days.

When in good physical and psychological condition, I focus the same amount of time, but quality of code is way better.

At home, the lack of noise and unwanted interruption increases the capacity of concentration and I can code 6 hours with better quality. The lack of social interaction however on a long run however erodes my pleasure of working, so I don't do it too often. (but it should also happen in good working environment or with good mental Daishiman or walshemj).

Stresses debilitates me, so I code way slower and with poor quality during a crunch unless I kick a burn in.

That is the reason I prefer a balanced solution.

It is kind of funny we have the same feedbacks.

I have a theory that the difference between 4-5 and 5-6 is the difference between a crowdy working environment and a quiet one.

Could some of you tell whether you work in a crowded or a calm place too? It would be fun if I was right.

julie1··on Attacked By Thugs (2004)
The first asset for publishing is reputation and credibility.

People do publish http://www.bondyblog.fr/ (bondy are not the only one, but the most famous).

And they show the positive side of our place: creativity, openness, intiative.

And it is cool. They just don't have any audience.

When something happens, google news never index their point of view as relevant for you, nor do the journalists ask them to publish except some confidential alterweb media (like rue89/mediapart/indimedia).

It is fun that the social fracture also affects google algorithms.

julie1··on Attacked By Thugs (2004)
Well, I am not sure what very rich are. I am quite not sure of the definition of rich. Let's say privileged people.

For instance, if you want to have degree in order to practice accountability or being a pharmacist, or being notaire, or being a lawyer then you need a practical internship. Since there is a limited amount of position offered, then being a «son of a» de facto gives you some priviledges that will translate in real money.

Since the state regulates these liberal professions there income are guaranteed to be above the average (given some conditions that are too long to detail, but noticeable).

So it is very tough to distinguish privileges and wealth.

I cannot measure if I am right so it is pure speculation of me. I can actually say I experienced these situations at first and second order. However I cannot say if it is that important in both frequency and impact as I claim it to be.

I am very close to hasty generalisation fallacy because it is hard to be objective when you measure the system in which you are. My point of view is not neutral at all, all the more I feel emotionally involved as an actor in what I describe. I chose to run away instead of being either the victim or the bullier (I came sadly to be both at some point but not enough to feel sad for anyone).

However, I am totally fine with my biases. Although sometimes when I tell these stories, I wonder if I am suffering of delusion because it is not my actual reality at all and it feels so impossible.

julie1··on Attacked By Thugs (2004)
They do different crimes, but not all crimes are not sanctionned the same.

For all day life crime, if you are kid from a «famous person» you can try to get off the hook by invoking your relationships. (Jean Pierre Pernaud's kid (a famous TV anchor) tried it while speeding on an highway at 190km/h where it was limited at 90km/h. (that was what a local police guy said while sharing a beer. He may have lied, but this story even if it false is so close to what people feel that I can accept it as true enough)).

For free loading in transport you can get annoyed (a 5$ crime). For forgetting to pay wages or bills, not enforcing the basics of security in your activity or even forgetting to pay social charges(count in k$), even if you are caught on the spots you will be hardly annoyed and humilated.

They are poor's crimes and rich's crimes (that cost more to the collectivity).

A white business man not respecting the law using like being a proven spammer (artprice) and exploiting his salarymen is an exemple to the society. An arab business man providing good weed and exploiting his «cousins» is a criminal. Drug dealers at the bottom of the hierarchy are paid like at the minimum rate regarding the risks taken.

Since the pushers are coloured and there is quite a discrimination, thus the society makes it easier for the kingpin to have cheap dedicated workforce. Business is business, not a charitative association. And the rules of business applies all alike. You cant get rich without capital and Income < outcome.

And fiscal evasion is not sanctionned on the long run if you accept to finally pay your due: fiscal administration will consent to close their eyes on some points.

Fiscal inequality is at its top. VAT makes it hard for people not to be taxed, and this is the biggest origin of taxes. On the other hand fiscal laws makes it easier for the richer to evade the taxes on income and patrimonial.

The poor get poorer and more subject to social violence, while rich get richer and more subject to physical violence. In a closed system if you compress a part, the compression has to propagate somewhere.

Btw, the system is truly meritocratic. To get to be a journalist you have very fair selection after highschool.

But oddly enough «sectorisation of the school maps» make it harder for poor kids to reach the good high schools that are statistically bound to be able to reach the «entry level» of the honestly fairly selective meritocratic system. I don't say you can't be successful. I just say a system is unfair when some kids begins life with a 10 kg loaded bag, and others none and you are being required to first do 42km under a chrono before beginning to compete a fair competition.

That may explain why the journalists that are scared of going beyond the «périphérique» (the border of Paris) often (not always) makes it look like this place is another planet when they write articles. It is quite tragically comic to read their papers.

julie1··on Attacked By Thugs (2004)
In fact, we «banlieusards» from Paris have a tendency to consider ourselves as «THE» banlieue. The most emblematic one. But most big cities have one of their own. Marseilles, Lyon and Lille have theirs.
julie1··on Attacked By Thugs (2004)
Oh! Stupid me! I did not flee, because I could not move out of the city. Courage is not always a choice.
julie1··on Attacked By Thugs (2004)
banlieue = subburbs. Paris == 1M intra muros (~15km radius from notre dame) subburbs == 12M (~40km)

BAC = Brigade Anti Criminalité (Anti Crime Unit) But everybody refers to them as the BAC or in slang the «cowboys»

julie1··on Attacked By Thugs (2004)
I am coming from «la banlieue».

These kind of incidents happens to you so much time in your life that I can't empathize. Aggression is stressful, but even being beaten is not the end of the world. It's part of the process of becoming adult at my opinion to know how to face these kind of incidents.

And our special policemen «la BAC» are behaving like bad cops in movie we call them the cowboys. When you see them in the suburbs they cover a surface of 15km in radius. But, when you go in Paris, where people are wealthy you can have 4 cars looking for a block because one gypsiy has been spotted pickpocketing.

The normal cops on the field are worse. They can control you. And even if you are white (and right) when they control you if you are not in suit an tie or looking like a rich kid they will talk to you like a 6 years old kid if they think you look like a criminal.

Most of the time I am white and dressed like a rick kid, so it's rather pretty okay for me. I have 2 friend of mine who are in the police. I know what they face, and I also see the other side of the fence. The worst is it does not seems related to human nature, but much more the result of a cascade of bad political, economical and social decisions that resulted in a clock-like mechanic of systemic violence based on a ghettoisation of violence.

Just to say where I come from we all experienced these «aggression», and I will develop the reason why it is bad to flee and not face the problem.

I avoided not the streets of my town, but the violence (my martial art was running like hell). And then I learnt how to face it more constructively.

I learnt.

By overcoming your fear of the place, you can meet the people: the thugs, the cowboy, the rich kids ....

And you see that whatever you can think, this violence is not directed towards you. It is directed towards the society, and the pain they live in.

Towards discrimination ans poverty. You learn there are bad guys every where (cops, rich kids, thugs) and nice guys too.

But learn for survival to spot two important informations: who has the more power, and who can reach you.

to sum up: R > C > T in terms of power. Rich kids are out of reach of the law, and the thugs because they live in their ghetto, and can call for more cops. You may think it is not violent a rich kid. But in the private school near me the kids of celebrities (such as famous actors) were famous for drug consommation (they had the money), being thieves and all, but the cops were constantly surveying the public school where no one had as much money (coke was expensive).

Cops have more power on you and the thugs because they put you in jail for fallacious reasons. So you learn to not be picky when they troll you and talk to you as if you were a retarded.

You notice that they do it all the more you are black or to tanned.

Except if you have a kipa, that would be antisemitism and that is not well socially tolerated.

Then, they are the thugs, they are a pain in the ass. They are often the dealers and some times thugging the rich kids. But, they never thug the rich kids where they live, because troubles are bad for business.

So I you are close to a place where people deal, you have less crimes that make the people call the police (like prostitution).

It can be seen as cool.

Then you go to work to the capital. There people call you an affabulator or a mythomaniac when you tell your stories, bacause «they live in the same place, and it never happened to them».

And one day at works a rich kid will whine because he was «thugged». An incident level 2 on the Richer scale of what you experienced. And he will call for more security, more repression, and he will eventually blame it on the coloured and tanned.

It is not always true, but mostly we can spot a lot of the «rich kids» are jews, because sepharadim last name are as easy to recognize as the colour of the skin. It creates prejudices. Is it stastically true? I don't care. I you want to understand, you have to accept the other's point of view.

And guess what, because I was learning french boxing I met both people practicing «ratonnade»(when you go in a city to beat the pulp of the arabs) and thugging the rich kids. I liked these people though.

They hate each others because a fraction of the others are violent to them on the sole reason of their difference.

So they have violent discriminating violence that reinforces itself in vicious feedback loop: no one is innocent.

And they all go voting marine le pen hoping she will get rid of the bad guys.

So I decided to take a stand rationally.

I blame it on everyone. I blame it more on the more powerful.

The vicious circle can only be broken by stopping to exert discriminative violence, and stopping to create the social, political reasons of the core violence : poverty AND ghettoisation.

I quite loaded the end of my description so that you have an overview of how the conflict in Israel can spread to other cities in Europa. They spread because we built the same kind of ghettos where poor and tanned are concentrated and other citizens live in another reality protected by the walls of the force of order. The conflict still has not yet comes as far as using tank and rockets. Just stones, kicks vs tasers and gum guns (40mm cartridge with gum balls).

The moral of my story is when you are thugged, learn to pass through the violence so you don't take part in this vicious cicle. So that you don't ignore it, and try to make you understanding of this shitty situation.

If you avoid it, if you avoid the places where over citizens are going you ignore what is happening in your community. And if you call for only more order, you just take part in the building of violence.

Problems are to be face. Problems are to be solved, especially when they induce the violence and the pain in the community.

Maybe my analysis is wrong, but I think I am right to care. I was right not to flee and whine.

PS for the record my city -Pontoise- ranks as one of the calmest city you can see in my banlieue, and the aggression I have faced were no more than 4 on a span of 30 years except if you add the 6 guys always trying to beat me at the end of school for 6 months in a row because I was socially awkward and pedantic, but they never got me, because I was escaping smartly the school every time -but this is just bullying- I don't call that an aggression just an initiatic rite for your acceptance in the empire of nerddom.
