julianpye··on Behind the Pixel: Google’s First Real Threat to Apple’s iPhone
Last week we tried to launch an Android-first app at a major startup conference with 5000 visitors.

95% of the visitors (startups, entrepreneurs, investors, executives) had iPhones. We later confirmed this by looking at the network stats and couldn't believe it. In a country where Android statistically has 80% marketshare. The Android users loved the product, but we failed because we couldn't generate word-of-mouth.

For the target audience of the Pixel, this is an uphill battle.

julianpye··on Bringing Pokémon GO to life on Google Cloud
Interesting, can you share why it would not make sense to use App Engine here (or why Ingress ran into anti-patterns)?
julianpye··on The Two Cultures and the Scientific Revolution
This is quite related to the discussion on the Farm Hall accounts. Politics vs. science.

In his speech Snow suggested that western societies typically had ruling classes composed principally of humanities graduates who were effectively ill-equipped to appreciate what science had to offer. Snow identified three key menaces arising from the existence of nuclear weapons, over-population, and the gap between rich and poor nations as pressing instances of where "literary intellectuals" who in Snow's view were "natural luddites" failed to see that solutions might come from "natural scientists" who, again in Snow's view, held "the future in their bones"

julianpye··on Apple in talks with luxury carmaker McLaren
If this is about a new line of baby strollers, I am really interested :)

(TIL they are two different companies, where I always thought it's a brilliant marketing idea)

julianpye··on Twitter: A Clusterfuck of UI Mistakes
Twitter's UI is not just annoying, but it makes it difficult for users to onboard. Most new users are at conferences, watch TV shows, etc... and want to follow a hashtag and see it live.

Now... what is a good way for a new user to do this without overload? I haven't found a good way to explain this without using Tweetdeck and even then it often feels like a terminal command gone loose.

julianpye··on A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket has exploded at Cape Canaveral
http://www.spaceflightinsider.com/organizations/space-explor...

This article has some information on the new characteristics:

- Although considered to be an iterative upgrade from the Falcon 9 v1.1 that preceded it, the modifications to the Full Thrust version have increased the vehicle’s published liftoff capabilities by as much as 30 percent.

- A key component of this performance increase is the use of “densified” propellant. By chilling the liquid oxygen to minus 340 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 207 degrees Celsius) and the RP-1, a highly-refined form of kerosene used as rocket fuel, to 20 degrees Fahrenheit ( minus 7 degrees Celsius), SpaceX has demonstrated the capability to store more oxidizer and fuel in a given volume, as well as increase the flow of propellant through the turbopumps on the first stage’s nine Merlin 1D powerplants and on the upper stage’s lone MVac.

julianpye··on WeChat’s world
Very interesting chart showing the massive revenue potential for Whatsapp in light of WeChat's revenue from chat. It reminds me however of the late 90s when all major Telco operators were in a bubble being valuated after Docomo - the idea was that a similar business as in Japan could flourish in the West, when in fact the Japanese market followed its own laws.
julianpye··on The Hunt for the Death Valley Germans
Those who argue about the level of danger of that terrain should note one really important aspect: young children overheat really quickly in thelse environments. In these scenarios even if given water reserves, adults will outlive children (initially). There are plenty of tales in Death Valley about this. So with kids the risk is an entire level higher.
julianpye··on Welcome to Magenta – Google music AI project
Thanks. Turns out I was taught me something completely wrong about Mahler! I just spoke to my parents (who were responsible for much of my musical education) and told them this, too. It seems they knew it from their parents, too.
julianpye··on Welcome to Magenta – Google music AI project
Keyboards have been popping out automatic C-maj, A-min, F-maj, G-maj progressions for fourty years now. And with the typical toolset for electronic music, it will be easily capable to create something similar.

But the masterpieces of music demand something altogether different. Beethoven's break with consistency by switching keys in the adagio of the 5th piano concerto. Wagner introducing the Tristan chord, Berg using C-major only as a joke in Lulu, when the word money is mentioned.

Add to that ingenuity the personal drama behind music. Bach's crisis of faith leading to 'What God does is well done' to Mahler losing so many of his children that he composed the Kindertotenlieder ("Songs on the Death of Children") to the origins of a simple pop song such as 'Tears in heaven' that moves people tremendously... Music is shaped by our biological life cycle, not by that of a computer program.

julianpye··on Chernobyl's legacy 30 years on
Another amazing 'weird' nature reserve is the DMZ between South and North Korea. You can see the most amazing birds of prey there hunting animals in the area between the propaganda villages.
julianpye··on DataGrip: Swiss Army Knife for Databases and SQL
My concern is not so much about the value, but it's about the risk of fragmentation of what you need across many different IDE tools.
julianpye··on DataGrip: Swiss Army Knife for Databases and SQL
As great as Jetbrains IDEA is, they are now trying to push their Creative Cloud style suite of several separate tools called Jetbrains Toolbox. My concern is that in the long-term the integrated features of IDEA will be weakened in favour of lots of individual tools for which one needs the toolbox.
julianpye··on The Arctic Suicides: It's Not the Dark That Kills You
But consider the Bush family vs. Saddam as a rap battle...
julianpye··on The Arctic Suicides: It's Not the Dark That Kills You
In rural areas when you get invited, often there is nothing else to eat. You don't get a menu. Most days you eat Seal (cooked for 5 hours). No side veggies. No spices.

I do know that there were restaurants in Nuuk and Ilulissat selling whale meat on the menu. I guess mostly to Japanese customers, if you know the popularity of restaurants in Osaka or Tokyo selling whale meat. That is of course against the conditions of Aboriginal Subsistence Whaling.

julianpye··on The Arctic Suicides: It's Not the Dark That Kills You
I love, love, love Greenland. Best place I have ever been to. When I was spending time in Tasiilaq, I was told that the breakdown happened because of the fallout from the Greenpeace activities against seal clubbing in Canada. This destroyed the market for fur products and led to social welfare from Denmark and alcoholism.

Anyway, when in Greenland it is politically correct to eat seal and whale, once you find out how they are hunted and how the population cherishes the animals.

The coolest thing about Greenland was that the museums had no tools for warfare. Conflicts between people in Greenland were carried out by people playing drums and 'rapping' their cause in a song duel. If you had the laughs and opinions on your side, the person who 'lost' received sled dogs and food and was let go. I wish this could be used for all conflicts around the world.

julianpye··on Google I/O 2016
Lots of Firebase - wild guess, but I assume Firebase support will be integrated in Android Studio extending/maybe replacing the current Cloud-Endpoints feature (which is unfortunate, because I use it extensively).
julianpye··on How to use ADHD to your advantage and improve your life
With the Economist leading on the qualities of Autism in its latest issue, maybe it is time to also consider ADHD as a talent, not as something to medicate. The article may be silly, but I consider AD(H)D a superpower, yet as anyone with ADHD knows there's lots of Kryptonite around.
julianpye··on Andy Weir, Author of the Martian, Shares Details About His Next Novel
If you enjoyed 'The Martian', you should read his famous story 'The Egg', if you haven't already:

julianpye··on Bill – by Ben Horowitz
Lovely obit - like the best doctors, the best mentors address every aspect of your life: not just your work business, but also your family 'business' and your spiritual well-being.

We read a lot recently about the achievements of Andy Grove and Bill Campbell (both champions of Ben), but the key is that every one of us can mentor and help anyone else. The key is listening and empathizing, taking time and accepting. You don't need to operate a VC fund to do it, you just can be a nice human being who listens, understands and feels.

julianpye··on Ask HN: 10 year old girl with creative stop motion art wants to program a game
I think she is into the output. 15 years ago I would have said Macromedia Director. I don't know what the equivalent would be nowadays.
julianpye··on Jeff Bezos’ letter to shareholders
AWS and Prime are winners. So is marketplace, he says. Maybe financially for Amazon, but from a customer standpoint I think marketplace is a real failure. It's the reason I tell relatives not to buy on Amazon, because several got burned so many times by accidentally buying from dodgy sellers, thinking it was from Amazon.
julianpye··on Y Combinator cofounder Jessica Livingston to take year-long sabbatical
Not an example. You can have kids or not have kids. But my girlfriend's uni teacher at University College London said 'I have two kids - I call them the enemies of entrepreneurs'. It should not be like that. Being free means that you can take care of your kid whenever it needs you. Being able to setup your own company structure means you can support everyone's personal lives. In startup situations this is so much easier, since you know them personally.
julianpye··on Y Combinator cofounder Jessica Livingston to take year-long sabbatical
Congrats to Jessica! As a parent of a 1 year old mastercrawler, I am also so grateful to Paul taking time off earlier to spend time to watch his kids grow up and I love his tales of them growing up. Having a family changes everything. Right now parenthood is incompatible with startups - how can we change this and make startups better for young parents as well who for now will just always try to get corporate jobs?
julianpye··on I’m a boring programmer (and proud of it)
In my experience I also met the following types of S/W engs:

- 'Pioneers' - hackers that pave the way, create amazing prototypes and whose code you can't use in production

- 'Architects' - who see the work of pioneers and see the bigger picture and build the structure that is needed

- 'dogmatists' - who see beauty in the art and educate their peers and don't create much code, and act as cult(ural) leaders

- 'Workers' - who implement, work 9 to 5 and go home and implement solidly and don't need passion, but have lots of discipline.

The last group is really important and is rarely talked about.

julianpye··on Hands-on with HoloLens: On the cusp of a revolution
This is the type of technology that is crying out for a killerapp, but may end up struggling to find one.

I had a Vodafone R&D team working with the Sony 3D AR glasses (aka 'Tom Hanks CES glasses'). We loved the tech and had a great playground, but couldn't get to the creation of one app that solved a clear painpoint.

We ended up with glorious tech demos, but they were all suited for a short-lived themepark attraction but not for ongoing use.

Anyway, I am excitedly waiting for someone who can do better than us.

julianpye··on The Search for the Perfect To-do List
This is key for any ADDers - chains of dependencies to ensure that not only raisins are picked off your ToDo List and you get to only see next steps and not all steps. For the past three years I have been working on this in an app sideproject and planned to launch the beta this winter, but I keep getting distracted :) Android alpha testers can get in touch with me.
julianpye··on A Tribute to Andy Grove (2015) [video]
'Let's remember that millions of young people who have had the misfortune of being born in the wrong national boundaries are going through all the horrors that Ben described. I made it. Let’s try in a little way to help them make it.'
julianpye··on The new YC: As it tries to scale from 200 to 2,000 companies
The first batch of YC founders photo is a bit heartbreaking. Aaron next to Sam next to pg and Jessica on the left. The latter batches benefited from the learnings, but this batch must have been so much more personal.
julianpye··on How to Raise a Creative Child. Step One: Back Off
I believe in the creative power of boredom. Boredom and lack of distractions amongst kids create the most creative environment and nurture real interest and exploration.

Today's kids are oversaturated with distractions and their lives are fully planned around activities. So they live according to templates, but not according to their own motivators.

Then again, having a child myself (10 months old) I have noticed many parents have so many activities and things planned themselves that they distract their children (read consume content on iPads) in order to pacify them. It's a circle.
