juddlyon··on Does Reddit have an astroturfing problem? What the data suggests
I frequent sports subreddits and they are chock full of AI created ragebait headlines. It’s incredibly hard resisting the urge to correct the ridiculous statements.

It was more fun when it was an incorrect human.

juddlyon··on Sonnet 5.5
The last couple models have output text that confuses the hell out of me. It technically makes sense but covers like 11 topics and is hard to follow. I’ve tinkered with my system prompt and only slightly improved things. Not digging them.
juddlyon··on Your website is not for you
Beware of the HIPPO! (Highest Paid Person’s Opinion)
juddlyon··on Ask HN: Is Codex really on Par with Claude Code?
Can you elaborate on your CLI issue tracker? I’ve been wanting a todo list tailored to agentic coding that will work with CC, Codex, Gemini, etc. Simple, but more than markdown.
juddlyon··on I wanted to build vertical SaaS for pest control, so I took a technician job
This made me laugh. “We’ll computerize it and get filthy rich! They’re stuck in 2015!”

I’m guilty of this type of thinking and occasionally get reminded when I’m way out of my lane.

juddlyon··on Recovering Anthony Bourdain's Li.st's
I love Bourdain but wanted to note he did have a culinary school background. Also came from a wealthy family.
juddlyon··on Anthropic acquires Bun
I had the same impression: bottom line up front, didn’t bury the lede, no weasel language.
juddlyon··on Juneteenth in Photos
There are some wonderful photos and stories here, salute to the people at Texas Highways for putting this together.

From the article:

"The day was dubbed Emancipation Day but, slowly, the term Juneteenth — a portmanteau of June and 19th — took hold."

Debating the name instead of appreciating the holiday and gravity of the topic is missing the forrest for the trees. Just wow.

juddlyon··on Building Effective AI Agents
Thank you for the extra notes, this is top of mind for me.
juddlyon··on Jules: An asynchronous coding agent
Claude Code has been creating and cleaning up lots of Git messes for me.
juddlyon··on Stax Museum Bob Abrahamian Collection
Definitely! One of the best museums I’ve ever been to.
juddlyon··on Show HN: Basecoat – shadcn/UI components, no React required
Yep, I’ve used Alpine extensively and HTMX here and there. Lots of Vue.

There are not sets of polished, battle-tested UI libraries made for server side. Bootstrap ships with JS, but most of the CSS and template frameworks assume you’re using a headless setup.

I thought Web Components might spur things, but not really. React has continued to dominate.

juddlyon··on Show HN: Basecoat – shadcn/UI components, no React required
There’s a huge need for this, thank you! I build server-rendered marketing sites and there’s a huge gulf between the jQuery and React era.
juddlyon··on Sora is here
YouTube Shorts are full of AI animal videos with distorted proportions, living in the wrong habitat, and so on. They popped up on my son’s account and I hate them for the reasons you outline. They aren’t cartoonish enough explain away, nor realistic enough to be educational.
juddlyon··on Best Documentaries You've Ever Seen
I saw Meru in a theater and sat in the parking lot afterwards wondering what I just watched.
juddlyon··on Best ecommerce UX practices from mcmaster.com
One advantage is that they keep the same design for many years so each time you use it you get better/faster. You know what to expect.
juddlyon··on The “je ne sais quoi” of TikTok
TikTok is the spiritual successor to Vine, but with YouTube scale.
juddlyon··on Moving from React to htmx
htmx is deceptively powerful for how easy it is to use.
juddlyon··on Ask HN: What's is your go to toolset for simple front end development?
Check out shuffle.dev, they have generators and components for the most popular frameworks. A great way to learn is to create the same pages with different libraries and observe the similarities and differences.
juddlyon··on Brave Search passes 2.5B queries, allows users to choose search rankings
I’ve been using Brave + Startpage for a few years on mobile. I couldn’t get used to DDG or other search engines. Adblocking is quite good but also catches legit some tooltips and modals.
juddlyon··on Software Engineering Insights from 10 Years at Google
These are some really uncharitable takes. A lot of us have found value in the author’s writing and code contributions over the years, many of which he made on his own time. This type of post is subjective by nature, give the guy a break.
juddlyon··on FormKit: Form building framework for Vue 3
The product and the website are really slick, but there is nothing about who made this other than "FormKit, Inc." in the footer. Is this a group, an individual, a subsidiary, or what?
juddlyon··on Meld is a visual diff and merge tool targeted at developers
Kaleidoscope on macOS isn’t cheap but has a great DX.
juddlyon··on Google Analytics 4
Plausible is excellent.
juddlyon··on Cloudflare announces fourth quarter and fiscal year 2021 financial results
I build marketing websites for B2B companies and almost always run them through Cloudflare's free plan. DNS management is fast/simple, it's good at blocking bots, and it gives us options in the future without having to jump through a million hoops to approve a new vendor.
juddlyon··on We bootstrapped our open source Google Analytics alternative to $500k ARR
Plausible is really well done. I’m happy to pay for it.
juddlyon··on This word does not exist
Agreed! Put an affiliate link to namecheap.com or your registrar of choice, many of these words sound like brandable startup names.
juddlyon··on Stripe launched 10 years ago today
Stripe was a sea change for those of us who implemented PayPal. It was so much better it seemed too good to be true.

I’ll be cheering for them until they get too huge and complacent, and then some brilliant startup will disrupt them and the cycle of nature will continue.

juddlyon··on Ask HN: Where is a nice place to host which is not AWS / GCP types
I’ve been using Vultr for a couple side projects and really like it.

Check out Low End Box for other recommendations.

juddlyon··on JavaScript for Shell Scripting
Better than bash but nothing beats Python for scripting IMO. I’m a mediocre programmer and search results are rich with Python examples for anything under the sun.
