juahan··on Deep-sea vehicles spot 'alien' sharks deep beneath the waves in the Pacific
It was a cover, but they did not invent it. It is an actual sudied thing and there has been some experimental mining operations as well.
juahan··on I returned to AWS and was reminded why I left
I’m pretty sure for most systems that does not matter in the slightest.
juahan··on Spanish legislation as a Git repo
I started doing it for Finland!
juahan··on Apple's 512GB Mac Studio vanishes, a quiet acknowledgment of the RAM shortage
This is what I’ve been wondering as well.
juahan··on Show HN: We Built the 1. EU-Sovereignty Audit for Websites
Could be also Finnish!
juahan··on Open Infrastructure Map
Yeah, and it’s not like the enemy would take the information from here, they already have it and likely even more detailed. It is quite basic stuff to have when preparing to defend (or attack).
juahan··on My game's server is blocked in Spain whenever there's a football match on
I guess artist registers if they want the entity to collect money for their plays.
juahan··on My home servers are not a homelab
A Quick peek into the Finnish law tells me that the temporary wiring requirements are even more strict. There is no way to do any of that legally without license and proper training.

So I guess we are not civilized enough then.

juahan··on My home servers are not a homelab
Went to the site pricetracker.wtf, tried one example search and Cloudflare blocked me. Before that it gave a few 500 errors. Cloudflare Ray ID: 957b4f2ee9b40b9c
juahan··on My home servers are not a homelab
Well in Finland there is nothing like this for sure. You cannot do 230V electricity work regardless of what you call the rooms. I would really like to hear more about this in other European countries.
juahan··on Rare black iceberg spotted off Labrador coast could be 100k years old
U
juahan··on How to Make a Living as a Writer
I have half jokingly thought that could there even be some evolutionary dimension of improving the language skills of your kids when doing it!
juahan··on To buy a Tesla Model 3, only to end up in hell
It uses 12.5 kW per 100km travelled. But should be of course kWh.
juahan··on Norway's wealth fund now worth $319,900 per citizen
Having lived in Norway forsome years, at least to me the locals told me that it is more due to tradition of ”matpakke” and not so much of not being able to do it. Even in the work place it is common to bring your own sandwitches in stead of having ”proper” lunch. And also, it would be a huge undertaking even if people wanted it as no school building is equipped with suitable kitchen.
juahan··on macOS menu bar app that shows how full the ISS urine tank is in real time
Finally a real 3D kanban.
juahan··on Trump wins presidency for second time
This is the weirdest thing I have read in a while. I can name multiple more democratic countries, for example starting with the Nordic countries. Just having a multi party system goes far in this comparison.
juahan··on Could you pass this 8th grade test from 1912?
At least in Finnish I’ve seen some, not often but they are there.
juahan··on Microsoft and OpenAI's close partnership shows signs of fraying
Sounds weird, I have had to login exactly once on my iOS devices.
juahan··on ReMarkable Paper Pro
Not sure if country of residence makes any difference (I’m in EU), but at least I got a new pen from warranty when the nib holder broke. And I think it was even little over 2 years after the purchase.
juahan··on Taming the beast that is the Django ORM – An introduction
How are those better?
juahan··on I kind of feel violated, my YouTube account was closed
It definitely would be interesting know details. SOmeone using my account for spam was first thing I suspected as well, but at least the Google login history does not show anything out of ordinary, all my devices from locations I know with timestamps that I can match with something I did. Also the account has strong password with 2FA enabled, which I assume should give some amount of security.
juahan··on I kind of feel violated, my YouTube account was closed
But the thing was that I wasn't even watching their ads as I have paid for the Premium for a long time...
juahan··on Analyzing my electricity consumption
Oh yes, now I remember reading the P1 spec and it does indeed say that it has been in use in the Netherlands for many years already. In Finland we also call it the HAN-port or the H1-port. Also, I must clarify that it uses RJ12, not RJ26 which I don’t even think exists.
juahan··on Analyzing my electricity consumption
In Finland (and I guess at least other Nordics as well) we are starting to get neters with so called P1-port, which is open for the user to get their data. All I needed was a wire with RJ26 and an ESP8622 with some esphome definitions and now I get all kinds of data from the meter every 4 seconds. Total consumption, consumption, amperage and voltages per phase etc.
juahan··on Irish State announce plan to build a porn preference register for most of the EU
No porn for you then I guess.
juahan··on Home Assistant blocked from integrating with Garage Door opener API
I have my Home Assistant completely local, if I need to access it from outside, I open Wireguard VPN to my local network and do my business in Hassio locally.
juahan··on Ask HN: What happened to hackerspaces?
Here in Finland the libraries often have that kind of stuff, in smaller places maybe a little less, but larger cities have nice amount of stuff to use and/or loan.
juahan··on The Philips Hue ecosystem is collapsing
I have no experience from Hue lights, but at least Ikea bulbs need to go to pairing mode if they were previously paired to something. Without it they cannot pair to new hub. With Ikea lights you get them into pairing mode by flicking the lights on and off 10 times.
juahan··on Experts fear crooks are cracking keys stolen in LastPass breach
Or one is cracked and the others are easy to figure out. Because these types of algorithms tend to feel complicated, but are not as you still have to remember it.
juahan··on Goat Rental – Hire Goats
In Finland we have almost exactly the same: Goat guarding the gabbage patch.
