jtxx··on 418 I’m a teapot
2022 was a sad year
jtxx··on The driest place on Earth
The scale at which we've traveled has also advanced with our technology, and the technology has also advanced with it - and it's increase with a pace that matches the overall progress of technology.

Columbus took 5 weeks to travel across the Atlantic with zero actual idea how long it would take.

The longest journey at sea without stops has been roughly 3 years.

We have people out on the ISS for 6m - 1y at a time.

Who knows how long it'll take for us to get to that point, but if we can survive the great filter, it's not unreasonable to think it'll take less than 1000 years to get to Mars based on the current trajectory. Probably a lot less.

jtxx··on Someone bought 26.9 BTC on Binance and sent it to Satoshi's dead wallet
re: who profits from this, got me thinking - even though $1m is a drop in the bucket of the market cap, could burning that amount of funds have any meaningful effect on the price? since the time of this transaction, prices have gone up 1.5% which is not huuuugely significant and causation != correlation

I think the hacked whale account makes most sense to me tho

jtxx··on Someone bought 26.9 BTC on Binance and sent it to Satoshi's dead wallet
+1, it's gotten pretty easy to do bitcoin tracing these days IIRC. there's definitely cash out methods but for this large of a sum, seems like it'd be difficult?
jtxx··on Software engineers hate code
hah humans are interesting! I'm the opposite. I love starting a codebase, I also make music and it's way easier for me to make 100 cool unique sketches live and improvised but not finish anything. it really takes all kinds
jtxx··on ProtonMail Rewrites Your Emails
yes it does. the phrase OP used was likely a reference to this Apple issue, not that PM is literally doing this
jtxx··on We created a fake language to root out resume liars
oh that’s fantastic! keeping this in my back pocket
jtxx··on I want a computer that I own
IDK, many people spend their whole lives glued to the TV or movies. it feels like it has only gotten worse. it also feels like people don't have hobbies these days. I think to convince people of what you're saying, we need to get people back into having more hobbies. or at least reading or something
jtxx··on Shops return to rural Sweden but are now staff-free
worked in restaurants for years before moving to software engineering. despite being 'good' at coding, it screws me up a bit that I was a lot happier in many ways while working at a restaurant. i felt I had a lot more brain bandwidth for my personal activities outside of work, too
jtxx··on I am a heroin user. I do not have a drug problem
yeah that was amazing. it felt like a lot of people on there were also fans of Erowid, which I now realize probably had a lot of the same people submitting experiences
jtxx··on Obfuscated Tiny C Compiler
damn that’s ballin, I didn’t even know people did that with code
jtxx··on Short fat engineers are undervalued
> you're likely in the wrong project or too involved in phases of a project where your contribution can't move the needle significantly anymore

to expand on this, I've found most of my happiness as a generalist in early stage startups. to me, a larger company looking for a generalist with no concrete role is a sign that they don't have their stuff together. obviously there are exceptions to this rule - some companies just prefer generalists - but usually once teams get big enough, people settle into specific roles, even as a generalist.

jtxx··on IPFS Support in Brave
It’s a memory hog on all OSes, but even worse on mac. and on my 2017MBP, cpu usage goes up quite a bit too.

Firefox is also pretty bad on my mbp though.

jtxx··on Authoritarianism Through Coding: Signal
self-righteous and a bit immature is how it came off to me. I definitely agree that tone is distracting from the article. made me stop reading faster
jtxx··on I almost quit caffeine in one year
I started with going from coffee to black tea, which is supposedly about half the caffeine... now I just skip tea sometimes. maybe i’ll stop it completely
jtxx··on Fujifilm Created a Magnetic Tape That Can Store 580 Terabytes
I guess it’s just me then. I wouldn’t write “we” in a comment online without explaining who “we” is, it seems like an unnecessary detail to explain
jtxx··on Fujifilm Created a Magnetic Tape That Can Store 580 Terabytes
Ah - I took the question as saying “I did nothing to indicate the sort and could in fact be purchasing for a business”, so I was trying to explain that side!
jtxx··on Fujifilm Created a Magnetic Tape That Can Store 580 Terabytes
No, it just means the person has the ability to purchase. They could be purchasing it for themselves or on the behalf of another organization.
jtxx··on Mutated Covid-19 strain confirmed in Japan as case tally hits record high
I’ve been thinking about this as well, they also kept their borders open to US citizens despite most countries closing them.

Perhaps Brexit closing trade doors with the EU could be resulting in a stronger relationship between the US & UK?

jtxx··on Tsundoku: The art of buying books and never reading them
I remember this saying originating as a riff on The Art of War, but I have no evidence of that
jtxx··on GTK 4.0 Released
I was thinking of sciter (5mb) and another similar crate that I can't remember the name for
jtxx··on GTK 4.0 Released
Yeah good point, I forgot about wxWidgets - wanted to use it but the rust bindings didn't look maintained.
jtxx··on GTK 4.0 Released
The main cross platform open source offerings are GTK and QT.

There are lightweight electron alternatives - HTML/CSS engines with a scripting DSL. Sciter is a paid option but I know there are free options depending on your language of choice

I’ve been working on a cross platform music player and went with GTK over QT because I preferred the Rust bindings, QT seemed to have a lot of non UI code I didn’t need, and I was skeptical of dealing with QT licenses (but a lot of people seem to work with it just fine - I just didn’t put the research in to see if it was right for me).

Compiling linux / mac was very easy for me. Cross compiling linux -> windows via mingw64 was also pretty easy. I had some trouble compiling mingw64 on windows, but that was due to SQLite / MSys issues that I never really figured out.

jtxx··on I3: Improved Tiling Window Manager
Wild, this is the path I went down and it was just 3 months ago! I didn’t expect Fedora to become my daily driver so quickly.
jtxx··on Apple M1 vs. Ryzen 3900X vs. Intel I9 in Software Development
I’m not sure about 5nm but I know they were targeting 7nm and something broke that set them back till 2022/23. Not looking good for intel

jtxx··on WavesMesh: Pay-what-you-can community-owned ISP for Baltimore
this is awesome. really excited to see more community owned ISPs picking up.

if you’re interested in community owned meshes, there’s one in NYC [0] and after searching I see Miluwalkee [1] and LA [2] have projects in progress. I’m sure there’s other projects happening in other places too, and they’re usually looking for volunteers - check out what’s going on in your town, and maybe start something if you can’t find anyone!

jtxx··on Ask HN: Are you depressed?
grappling with this myself these days. I would happily choose music over food years back. but once i started making code money, i got so comfortable. built up a whole world and « lifestyle » that now I (feel like I) have to maintain. and it feels like that’s how life continues to go as you accumulate a partner, pet, kids... you keep building up this house of cards that gets harder and harder to prevent from it all falling down. i dunno, sometimes I just wanna stop and run in the other direction because it feels like i’m doing it all wrong despite these being « markers of success ».
jtxx··on YouTube Down
yeah, the democratization of knowledge was 100% worth it. the only thing we can do from here is try to make it better
jtxx··on Ableton Live 11
wow, I'm so hyped for the improved tracking capabilities
jtxx··on Taking screenshots isn't allowed by the app after upgrading to Android 11
Linux phones!!! There’s still a lot of dev work to be done but this is exactly why I’m on board with the pinephone. not a daily driver yet, but if you’re a programmer looking for something to contribute to, go check it out
