jtrtoo··on Less stress, more productivity: working fewer hours is good for you and your boss
Ha, "energy and motivation" basis sounds about right for non-client work. I'm finding that getting smarter about what work I can outsource (e.g. bookkeeping to bookkeepers, tax preparation to CPA/accountant) is helping me out tremendously. It's very tempting to keep doing things because "I know I can do that", but forcing myself to let go of non-core/non-strategic areas is hugely empowering and helps with the balance issues and optimizes energy / context switching.
jtrtoo··on Less stress, more productivity: working fewer hours is good for you and your boss
Neat. Checked out your web site and really like your philosophy! I'm a solo consultant going into my tenth consecutive year. I too have found that >20 hours definitely throws off the balance. It's still a work in progress, but that 20 hour mark is about what consider my level of useful (high impact) hours.

I understand what you do for employees of your firm, but how do you apply your philosophy to yourself (and the other principals)? Client work is one thing, but there's plenty of non-client work too. Particularly in a small firm!

jtrtoo··on Silicon Valley CEO who allegedly kicked girlfriend 117 times gets 1 year in jail
Sadly the headline is a tad misleading. He got jail time only after violating his probation. The violation? Doing it again. Geez.
jtrtoo··on Kansas couple sues IP mapping firm for turning their life into a “digital hell”
Contrarian perspective: These GeoIP firms should start offering businesses in a given area the ability to sponsor the area and become the default location.
jtrtoo··on Forget Technical Debt–Here's How to Build Technical wealth
It easily is clicked away. (Not that that makes a great experience.) The article itself is worthwhile, both in breadth and depth.
jtrtoo··on Ask HN: Have you launched a failed web business?
Sounds like you learned some truly valuable lessons applicable to future endeavors. That's precisely why you should not be discouraged; you're better prepared than ever before. Good luck, whatever your future holds. :)
jtrtoo··on How big company CEOs spend their time in work
Okay article concept, but full of hearsay. And no references.
jtrtoo··on Turn your Android device into a life saving tool in an emergency
This might get more interest submitted as a "Show HN" since you seem to be the author. :)
jtrtoo··on Ask HN: Web Consulting Logistics?
1. Finding clients. 2. Finding projects. 3. Developing relationships. 4. Managing cash flow. 5. Setting fees. 6. Doing the actual work for clients. 7. Leveraging knowledge and experiences across clients / projects. 8. Attracting work that you continue to enjoy. 9. Managing your time. 10. Managing your energy. 11. Finding new business

Just roughly off the top of my head.

jtrtoo··on Ask HN: What do you use for your TODO, how much HN material you actually read?
I read whatever interests me, sometimes immediately but generally by placing it in my Pocket (http://getpocket.com) for later perusal at my leisure. Sometime I come across something relevant to a client/colleague; I tend to share those, with a brief comment, in real-time.
jtrtoo··on Ask HN: Have you launched a failed web business?
Unsolicited feedback: less code so it's more readable across the room & sex the design up a bit.

Why? They could recommend any product via Amazon. Not a huge incentive to lie. Though a healthy skepticism is always good. For what it's worth these are the folks behind the Wirecutter.com. They are legit.

jtrtoo··on Amazon Elastic File System – Production-Ready in Three Regions
I think you might be going about solving this problem in a sub-optiimal way. WordPress data consists of db + asset files. Db gets addressed outside of this and asset files either go in s3 or are synced (rsync, etc)

Indeed. Google ITAR. I remember 90s web page protests.
jtrtoo··on Warn HN: CrashPlan are deleting backups older than 6 months with no notice
I can understand the policy and the action, but the notification should come prior to deletion. And possibly include a per machine opt-out for paying customers. (For the record I am a paying customer and have a couple old backups, but haven't yet run across this.)

jtrtoo··on Google Has Given HTTPS a Huge Boost
I just went through this with some of my sites. Some of my URLs were showing up in searches with HTTP URLs, while others were showing up with HTTPS URLs. Digging deeper also showed both HTTP and HTTPS being indexed.

This isn't an HTTPS preference on Google's part. It's (effectively) a mis-configuration on the web site operator's part.

HttpWatch (and many other folks with web sites) should either be using 301 Redirects or, in many cases where that's not compatible with other things being done, using the Canonical link element to indicate with https content is just a copy of http content.

So: Try setting your ‘canonical’ line properly in your web pages. Then this won’t happen.

Right now HttpWatch's http pages report their http as canonical. Their https pages report https as canonical. They effectively are listing their site twice with Google (and probably splitting/hurting SEO, but that's another story.)

jtrtoo··on Ask HN: What projects are you working on?
I have a few places where a quick and dirty check based on the receipt of an email (or not) (think backup job emails) would be easier to integrate than http. Plus then adding the ability to notify based on the existence/non-existence of a keyword (e.g. "success" or "error").

I totally get the HTTP integration, but some places that just isn't all that convenient and part of what I pay for is convenience/one less thing on my to do list. :)
