jtms··on A Manual for Creating Atheists: A Critical Review (2014)
Theists are the ones claiming an explanation for the nature of existence - the burden of proof is on them. “Belief” is not a valid argument when putting forward a theory. I might “believe” we are living in a simulation, but it doesn’t make it any more true than a belief in a magical all knowing space unicorn that rockets through the universe propelled by rainbows while it creates life or any other as of yet non provable nonsense
jtms··on Show HN: My multiplayer custom-engine game that loads in less than a second
How does one get the square shaped ships? They seem far more powerful than the round ones and I can't find any in the upgrades.
jtms··on Robinhood is limiting purchases of stocks: AMC, Blackberry, Nokia, and GameStop
What evidence? There was and is no evidence of systemic fraud
jtms··on Tencent is acquiring a majority stake in Klei Entertainment
no, I don't, its absolutely relevant to the discussion about business and game industry economics.
jtms··on Tencent is acquiring a majority stake in Klei Entertainment
That’s some nice, completely irrelevant what-about-ism
jtms··on Dungeon Magazine
Walden books! Oh man..thank you for that dose of nerd nostalgia!
jtms··on Ask HN: What Lived Up to the Hype?
for something that scratches a similar itch, but is much more constrained and puzzle like (in a good way) try Infinifactory. It actually predates Factorio and all of the games mentioned and is very much worth playing.

http://www.zachtronics.com/infinifactory/

jtms··on Ask HN: What Lived Up to the Hype?
oh please stop... don't take something as joyous and wonderful as Factorio and try to make it about misery. I play games like Factorio to not worry about the world's problems for a few hours.
jtms··on Hotwire: HTML over the Wire
it might not be so bad

<div id='counter'>42</div>

is not so many more bytes than...

{ counter: 42 }

also - no massive up front JS bundles to contend with

jtms··on Hotwire: HTML over the Wire
yeah... fallback is not a problem, you can always long-poll as socket.io has done for years
jtms··on Hotwire: HTML over the Wire
reminds me of the http://vanilla-js.com/ which is actually a parody, but also... not?
jtms··on Tillis Releases Text of Bipartisan Legislation to Fight Illegal Streaming
Yes, it should be, but then you possibly end up voting "no" on something that is then weaponized against you in the next election.

"Senator so and so refused to support the end of violence against babies!!" or other such nonsense.

jtms··on World’s biggest iceberg heads for disaster
FWIW the article does acknowledge this impact
jtms··on Should California ban gas in new homes? A climate battle heats up
Cool - let me just burn oak or pine everyday in my kitchen that sounds like a GREAT idea

jtms··on South Korea's fusion device KSTAR runs for 20 seconds at 100M degrees Celsius
lets just say you can't put your hand near it or you'll get a pretty bad ouchie
jtms··on South Korea's fusion device KSTAR runs for 20 seconds at 100M degrees Celsius
sshhhh... don't leak our plans for the fusion powered orbital rail gun platform - its top secret!
jtms··on FCC Chairman Ajit Pai will step down on January 20
I agree with you, having a rational conversation about NN and the FCC is sometimes difficult here. It seems like people just downvote anything they simply don't agree with. Your comment is a perfectly valid observation, yet people actively try to downvote it away and silence your point of view. My gut tells me that NN is probably a mostly beneficial regulation to have in place, but I have heard some very well reasoned arguments against it that seem more substantial and less reductive than "incompetency" or "corruption".
jtms··on Jane Street Market Prediction ($100k Kaggle competition)
Ok, I’ll bite - how, precisely, does one win a rhoshambo tournament?
jtms··on Ask HN: What is the best money you have spent on professional development?
I am glad switching to an IDE worked for you, but for me a well extended and configured Vim setup is the best IDE on earth. Anything an IDE can do, Vim can typically do as well given the right plugin.
jtms··on Recompile – a 3D Metroidvania-inspired hacking adventure game
that's really cool - my beefy gaming rig dual boots ubuntu so ill check it out!
jtms··on Recompile – a 3D Metroidvania-inspired hacking adventure game
Wow, I wish I had been exposed to this stuff in high school - I had already gotten well into my professional career when I found "Code: the hidden language of computer hardware and software" by Charles Petzold and it was just eureka moment after eureka moment reading that and then building the gates, adders, memory, etc from the diagrams in the book via redstone. One of my favorite learning experiences of all time!
jtms··on Volt: A reactive web framework where your Ruby code runs both server and client
I don't think its about avoiding Javascript as much as it is that Rubyists just really love writing Ruby, at least its that way for me. Javascript and React pays the bills now, but I was primarily a Ruby dev for a decade and I really do miss it.
jtms··on Volt: A reactive web framework where your Ruby code runs both server and client
Doh... I should actually read and not just gloss. Sorry about that! I'll check out that link, thanks for the reply :)

(replying as a sibling as I suppose we have hit maximum depth)

jtms··on Volt: A reactive web framework where your Ruby code runs both server and client
Ruby used to be my primary language for many years and I used its REPL extensively in my day to day and found it immensely useful. Is Clojure's REPL different/better than the IRB and pry REPL workflow?
jtms··on Recompile – a 3D Metroidvania-inspired hacking adventure game
That’s a shame - building logic gates from scratch in red stone was pure joy and absolutely changed the way I think about computers
jtms··on Recompile – a 3D Metroidvania-inspired hacking adventure game
I spend my entire day in tmux and vim land in a Linux terminal, but as a gamer wanting to play good games, it’s windows all the way. Gaming on Linux just still isn’t there yet.
jtms··on Scientists Discovered a Gigantic Structure in a Hidden Zone of Space
It’s vice - these days they are basically only one step removed from a “celebrity is actually an alien” style tabloid.
jtms··on Scientists say you can cancel the noise but keep your window open
