jtlienwis··on The U.S. will impose duties on solar equipment and washing machines made abroad
I did a rough calculation that the value of all solar power generated in 2018 is about the same as the value of we would get out of removing side mirrors from our cars ( about 2% gas saving due to better aerodynamics) and replacing them with cameras/lcd displays. Where are the SV startups doing this? Seems like a huge gain. And we would no longer have to worry about hitting the mirrors when we us a drive up window...
jtlienwis··on Study: Tesla battery production releases as much CO2 as 8 yrs of driving on gas
Overlooked in a lot of discussion of the CO2 impact of Tesla vs ICE is the effect of the added weight of the batteries on the amount of road damage a car will cause. A study in the 1950's showed that road damage is proportional to the third power of the axle weight of the car. If the Tesla weights 1/3 more that a similar ICE vehicle it will cause (4/3)^3 or about 3 times as much damage to the road a similar ICE. Replacing the fleet of ICE cars with Tesla type cars would lead to the road being replaced 3 times as often. Note concrete production is large CO2 emitter.
jtlienwis··on Is it time to break up Google?
Lets see. Intel has had an 80% market share since the days of the 8086. Yet here we are 30 years later and the cost for a transistor on the latest Intel chip are THOUSANDS of times cheaper than then. Tech has a pretty slippery slope for competitors that are not paranoid as Andy Grove used to say. Look at what happened to Yahoo, the Google of its day.

I think Intel had an 80% market share for all its days. Yet here we are 30 years past the 8086 days and transistors on the latest Intel chip are how many thousands of times cheaper than they were then? One big competitor in tech has to remain paranoid as Andy Grove said to stay alive. Look at what happened to Yahoo.
jtlienwis··on My Venezuela Nightmare: A 30-Day Hunt for Food in a Starving Land
Suffering from the disease of central government. We need a telethon to stamp this disease out. Look how many were killed in the 20th century because of it. Ideology infects a people then gets turned to government implementation, and when things go badly wrong, it can't be fixed until it collapses and the people finally start to learn their lesson.
jtlienwis··on How Cheap Can Electric Vehicles Get?
With all this happiness they need subsidies Why?
jtlienwis··on Costa Rica Is Now Running on 100% Renewable Electricity
I believe Norway produces 140TWatt-Hr per year vs Costa Rica 9 GWatt-Hr per year. Norway produces a lot of aluminum that takes a lot of power to produce. Is this right 14 thousand times as much power generated by hydro in Norway than Costa Rica? National statistics can be very misleading.
jtlienwis··on What are some work habits of successful programmers?
Do a Google search on "spider webs on caffeine". Over my long career as a programmer, I went from looking at caffeinated beverages as an aid to getting things done, to the discovery that I made far more programming errors under the influence of caffeine. I cut out my addiction to coke and pepsi and watched my productivity soar. Now, a new successful software company near my home town has built a new building, and the newspaper account describes the office spaces that have free access to Monster type drinks etc. I just wonder how this myth of "programming fluids" for programmers got started and why no one has actually studied it.
jtlienwis··on Ask HN: What are some good online resources to learn electrical engineering?
I would start with Engineering Circuit Analysis by Hayt and Kemmerly.
jtlienwis··on Silicon Valley Could Offer a Public Bus Commute That's Quicker Than Driving
I used to use the Silicon Valley bus system back in the 80's. On rainy days when you most needed the bus system to work all the Grumman buses they had then had a feature that when it rained, the electrical system would short out and the buses would stop running. Hopefully they have fixed that.
jtlienwis··on Why aren't we all using Japanese toilets?
And once we get passsed the bidet stage then we can go on to the urine diverting toilet. Check out the latest toilet design competition run by the Gates foundation...
jtlienwis··on Fast Inverse Square Root
I am wondering if in a lot of code taking this inverse square root is not necessary like when calculating length = sqrt(x^2+y^2) in a lot of code, you just want to know a minimum of maximum value so getting the min or max of x^2+y^2 is what you want and calculating the sqrt is not necessary.
