jtlienwis··on Vietnam: China is mislabeling products as Vietnamese to avoid US tariffs
Pot to kettle: you are black. Chinese have been counterfeiting labels for US and European nock off brands for decades. Powdered milk being a prime example.
jtlienwis··on I Got a Knuth Check for 0x$3.00
I had a comp sci prof back in the early 1970's. Someone told me that he had gotten a check from Knuth for finding an error. I saw him off campus once and I had to check to see if his feet actually touched the ground. I swear that they didn't.
jtlienwis··on Why did old PCs have key locks? (2017) [video]
The pdp-8 panel designers needed a way to secure the front plastic bezel to the front of the machine. They added a power key lock switch on the left and panel key lock switch on the right. They were there mostly to hold the front panel together, but the idea was copied by their competitors (Data General etc) and soon became a minicomputer standard.
jtlienwis··on Electric Cars Are Estimated to Be Cheaper Than Regular Cars by 2022
Everyone leaves out the fact that current EVs are heavier than their ICE competition. Since road wear is something like to the fourth power of axel weight, the road wear is going to be nearly 3x using a fleet of EVs. The extra concrete and energy needed to maintain roads will negate any saving unless the fleet is made lighter.
jtlienwis··on Can Uber ever make money?
Re Competition Taxis or Uber are not always the cheapest way. One of my friends used to do a lot of travelling to Tokyo on work assignments. The others from the company always hailed a cab and ended up paying $100 for a trip from the airport to the downtown hotels. My friend would jump onto the Tokyo subway and was always there at the hotel to greet the rest of them when their cabs would arrive. He usually paid just a few bucks for the subway token. Myself, I would sometimes get rides in the day from people I just met on the plane. But then it was a more trusting time. But maybe there is an app there that pairs people arriving in the same town. Those that have their cars in the airport parking lot and are willing to share a ride and those that are willing to pay a few bucks.
jtlienwis··on Green Material for Refrigeration Identified
I'm surprised no one has mentioned propane as refrigerant. Lots of environmental benefits. I believe Whole Foods uses it in some of their stores. Look online for "Propane as a refrigerant. Whats not to love?"
jtlienwis··on B Before A
I had a friend who went to Michigan State. This was back when computers were a new thing. As a freshman, he signed up for a graduate level comp sci class. Had a hard time convincing the prof he should be let in the class. As time went on, it was clear he was the star student. The next semester he was a TA for the class.
jtlienwis··on New Jersey becomes second state to ban cashless shops and restaurants
I am having trouble finding an injured party here.
jtlienwis··on Google Wants $15M in Tax Breaks to Build a Data Center in Minnesota
But digging deep into the pockets of the middle class is just so easy these days.
jtlienwis··on Preserve the Heritage; Ski with Wood
Mostly these are just sold for display on peoples walls as the write up says. I did learn on skis not too different from this. My grandfather came from Telemark. One advantage of the old time skis (the really long ones) is that you could go fast. Billy Kidd had a video about racing the old timers with long wooden skis in California. He could not beat them.
jtlienwis··on Foxconn Is Reconsidering Plan for Manufacturing in Wisconsin
Corruption started its latest incarnation in Wisconsin with Tommy Thompson. Approved the state lottery which led to casinos ( Chicago mafia controlled). Now, almost every month their is a fiduciary in some county or city government that gets caught with their hands in the till because of their casino losses. As for Foxconn... I keep saying this. We have almost all of the tech you need here in Wisconsin (or the upper midwest) for making our own lcd industry. 3M in Menomone Wi makes the Vikuity backlight material. We have pc board manufacturing (TTMI) in Chippewa Falls. Lots of electronic design talent at companies like Cray and HPE. So. Get in line and order the LCD production equipment from Nikon in Japan and start making some. What exactly do you need a contract manufacturer like Foxconn for?
jtlienwis··on Denmark is building a 'wall' on its German border. To stop pigs
The Danes have been working on walls to separate from Germany from at least the time of Charlemagne. Its called the Danevirke.
jtlienwis··on Who Is Paying Their ‘Fair Share’?
Left out of the charts, is the entire 19th century up until 1913. Under a regime of NO income tax, the United States moved from a rural, agrarian society to the worlds leader in oil, steel, autos, airplanes, radios, telephones etc. Immigrants, like my grandmother, who arrived penniless in 1911, flocked to the country. But that was before we became 'progressive'.
jtlienwis··on A majority of Americans support raising the top tax rate to 70 percent
If you frame it as a simple question, then sure almost everyone would say tax someone else at a high rate and they will assume they will pay less tax. But, if you go by how it actually will work out in the real world... Ask if you support a 70% tax on the highest incomes, if it results in less tax being collected on high incomes and MORE being paid by the lowest incomes, then it probably would not get such a high percentage. Need to lower the tax rate for higher earners, so that everyone works harder, pays more tax and yet gets themselves into a LOWER bracket. If you want to tax something, tax luxury goods and contributions to political candidates.
jtlienwis··on No Tuition, but You Pay a Percentage of Your Income if You Find a Job
I like the concept that the mining industry has developed. Its calle NSR ( net smelter return). A company will loan money to another miner that has a deposit but lacks money. The miner will use the money to build the mine and when they send their ore to the smelter, will pay back a percentage of the value of that ore to the company that loaned the money. Replace miner with student. Company issuing the NSR with teachers.
jtlienwis··on Taxpayers Should Never Subsidize Stadiums
I watch some of the video generated by the Maddon football video game, and find it almost as realistic as the real games. Someday, some entrepreneur is going to figure out that you can have realistic pro games generated by software. It will save a lot on player salaries etc. Then when the people at home start watching those instead of the real games (maybe they will all be online, and not blocked by the networks), they might not even want any more to go see real games at the stadium.
jtlienwis··on Letter from NY Governor: about Amazon tax breaks
Wow. This fool thinks that Amazon employees earn $75/hr. He could generate 25,000 jobs with a stroke of pen by approving fracking in his state. But it would violate his religious beliefs.
jtlienwis··on Big-box retailers are slashing their property taxes through a legal loophole
I live hear in Wisconsin. I tend to side with the big box stores. Lots of empty space around that indicates their store properties are not that valuable on the open market. As for the municipalities, they are in way too many things that they should not be into. Like running the electric and gas utilities, water utilities etc. Civic centers and so called industrial parks that turn them into real estate developers. Scores of government employees trying to attract businesses by handing out freebies to companies that would have come to their town anyway. Stick to doing street repair and snowplowing and quit your bitching.
jtlienwis··on Report: US on Track for Record Coal Retirements in 2018, with More on the Way
And China provinces, in defiance of the central government has permitted new coal plants equal to the generating capacity of all the current US plants in total.
jtlienwis··on Wisconsin’s $4.1B Foxconn factory boondoggle
What I find funny is that Wisconsin already makes a large number of the components needed for LCD monitors, TVs etc. 3M in Menomene makes the difusers that spred the light in back of the screen. There is TTM in Chippewa Falls that makes pcb boards that are needed for the electronics. There are IC design houses and computer makers (Cray Computer and HP) that can design the electronics. Foxconn buys the equipment to make the LCDs from the Japanese (Nikon) and they hire the workers to run them. Why not just eliminate the middle man (Foxconn) and make our own? I'm not sure the cost would have been much more.
jtlienwis··on PiDP-11: Recreating the PDP-11/70
I think it might have been the 1957 Philco-Bendix Duomatic washer/dryer front switches that inspired the PDP-11 panel.
jtlienwis··on PiDP-11: Recreating the PDP-11/70
I read something that said Ken Olsen found these switches on an old model washing machine and thought they would be great on the PDP machines.
jtlienwis··on Khosla Rebuffed as Supreme Court Rejects Beach-Access Appeal
Back when I was a kid, there was a pay to enter beach at a nearby lake. It had a fence on both ends running out into the water. My clever brother didn't want to pay a quarter to get in, so he swam around the fence and into the part of the lake where the beach was. The owners caught him and said he had to pay. He said you own the beach, not the lake. So, as long as he didn't use their pier or raft he was allowed.
jtlienwis··on US Congress passes bill to help advanced nuclear power
I read where if US reactors replaced their fuel rods with the new design from Lightbridge, that alone would up us electric generation by 2%. Which is about the same as the total share due to solar, although solar is rising quickly.
jtlienwis··on Pilotless Emergency Services Helicopters Coming to Silicon Valley
And when then insist you take a helo ride for that cut on your wrist, you will be amazed at the $5,000 bill added onto your hospital bill and hope to god its covered by your plan. And to pay for this everyone will have to use it, say good by to the less expensive ground based EMS. US health care is great at replacing the less expensive stuff for the only slightly better, but vastly more expensive.
jtlienwis··on AT&T raises most customers' fees by $1.23, adding $800M revenue
This is the result of AT&T's massive debt and the corruption of US politicians. AT&T is able to bribe the state and local governments to prevent any broadband competition and has gone far into debt to gobble up competition.
jtlienwis··on World Airports Voronoi (2014)
When I did work on Voronoi, i used the Mathematica built in function. I would get the gps coordinants from Google maps and use them as input. The output put into a google function that could make rectangular colored transparent regions on the map. But this was all 2d.
jtlienwis··on World Airports Voronoi (2014)
I did some work on Voronoi a few years ago. I made an overlay in Voronoi transparent colored cells that would show for example where the nearest convenience store was to a given location in the city and this would overlay the regular map of the city. I was going to try to sell these to the convenience store as they always had a map of the city they were in somewhere in each store. An improvement would be to run a google map from each store to each house and actually use the mileage to the store the store. This would account for rivers etc that would block the shortest path. There is probably an idea for a startup somewhere there....
jtlienwis··on California Votes to Require Rooftop Solar Power on New Homes
Sounds like a taking for everyone that has a lot on the north side of a hill or nieghbors with tall trees that block the sun. I think a growth industry is going to be California solar lawyers that fight for rights to open paths to sunshine.
jtlienwis··on A good programmer can be as 10X times more productive than a mediocre one
But when the company runs into financial trouble, it will fire the 10X programmer first. They will want to keep the head count up and can have more of the 1xers for the same amount of dollars. Wall Street likes this.
