jtietema··on Getting back my closed Google Play Developer account
It is worse if your account is tied to a business. Then the guidance is: register with a new legal entity. Complete insanity if you ask me.
jtietema··on Ask HN: Anyone working on something better than LLMs?
I think you might find Lex Fridmans interview with Yann LeCun interesting[1]. It discusses exactly this, how LLMs just mimmick intelligent behaviour but have no understanding of the world at all. It also discusses other approaches we should look at instead of current LLMs.

jtietema··on Opera becomes the first major browser with built-in access to local AI models
Hasn't Firefox been doing this for a while already with their local translate feature?

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/features/translate/

Maybe they mean LLM, instead of AI (not sure if Firefox translate models are LLM ir not)

jtietema··on Claim: Private GitHub repos included in AI dataset
I agree. Only my public repos are in the data set.
jtietema··on Coming Soon: Fedora for Apple Silicon Macs
Because the linux drivers might not support all the power saving states for all the hardware in the device.

For example: I bought a Dell XPS 9 months ago. With the earlier Fedora 37 kernels, it didn't put the Nvidia card into power saving mode, causing battery life to be less than an hour. Now it seems to work correctly and battery life is 3-4 hours for me.

jtietema··on Talent Cooling (2020)
This explanation is better than the one linked in the original post. It still doesn't provide a solution. But I suppose the solution is to regularly fire the bottom x% to counter balance the effect.
jtietema··on Ask HN: Why there are so many ads on YouTube?
I have and have noticed this as well. After the trail it seems the ads are excessive.
jtietema··on Android Studio 3.2
You are probably not counting the Gradle daemon and kotlin compiler daemon. I have seen those grow to 4±GB and ~8GB respectively. Not using Kotlin definitely has advantages for memory usage.
jtietema··on About pull request reviews
so true, it lacks an inbox feature like Bitbucket Server (Atlassian Stash) has. On top of that:

- keeping track of changes over the life time of a PR is impossible, you have review the whole thing over and over again - toggle notes (comments) on a per file basis is silly and unpractical on PR's with lots of files and comments. - there is no way to see which PR from a list you already approved.

And the list goes on and on. I have been using Github Enterprise at my new job since recently and it is by far the poorest of tools I have ever used to review code.

jtietema··on Stali: A new static Linux distribution
Yep but now instead of fetching 1 updated library, you depend on everybody and their cat to rebuild their binaries and publish updated versions.
jtietema··on Ask HN: Google Apps vs. Fastmail
I use fastmail for a couple of years now and have problems with spam at all.
jtietema··on Mutt 1.6
I configured mutt with the same key bindings as my Fastmail web interface. Solves the muscle memory problem.
jtietema··on Facebook at Work
I have tried to use Yammer at work, but found the apps and web interface quite poor. It didn't seem reconnect properly after being offline, mobile app didn't always notify me, also the chatwindows on the webclient where quite annoying to use.
jtietema··on How to reward skilled coders with something other than people management
It is not hard to understand, but it is hard to measure.

Do you reward writing more code, better code, code with less bugs? There is no one axis to measure along where as in sales you just measure the sale price.

jtietema··on Android development has its own Swift
I am building a side project app in Kotlin right now and so far it goes well. There are some minor problems with IDE support (kotlin source folder is not marked as a source folder when mixing Android and Kotlin together), but that is fixed with one click of a button. I really like it!
