jstream67··on Tesla investigation deepens after more than a dozen US ‘Autopilot’ crashes
From watching youtube videos I got the impression that the Ford 'Blue Cruise' does not require the hands to be on the wheel.

I haven't used the Ford system but I have used the Tesla system and it requires you to move the wheel at a pretty annoyingly and regular frequency to remain in autopilot mode. I believe the cabin camera can also detect when you are on your phone or looking away - but i'm not sure if this is rolled out to non-FSD cars.

I think the frequency that you have to prove you are paying attention is about every 30 seconds

Here are some quotes from the article for you. The concern is not that she cares about safety, but that she is very strongly biased against Tesla and has a financial interest in promoting other companies.

"The same goes for her stance regarding CEO Elon Musk. In March 2020, for example, Dr. Cummings seemingly joked about needing someone to stop her from punching Elon Musk in the face. "

"It should be noted that Dr. Cummings’ seat at Veoneer was not disclosed when she published a paper (which was later updated to remove inaccurate details about a fatal Tesla crash) criticizing systems such as Autopilot for their possible dangers. And so far, the incoming NHTSA senior safety adviser has not shared if she would be leaving her post at the Swedish LIDAR company, especially since she would soon be advising a US safety agency on driver-assist systems that adopt both LIDAR and non-LIDAR solutions. "

"Missy Cummings receives around $400,000 worth of stock in Swedish LIDAR company Veoneer per year as compensation for her role as a non-employee member of the board."

I think all the crashes involved in this investigation would have been radar. The vision only is really 2022+ year model cars (and possibly some late 2021).
jstream67··on Tesla investigation deepens after more than a dozen US ‘Autopilot’ crashes
This investigation is on Autopilot, not the FSD Beta.
jstream67··on Tesla investigation deepens after more than a dozen US ‘Autopilot’ crashes
I think we are all fortunate that teslarati.com is not a government agency :D
jstream67··on Tesla investigation deepens after more than a dozen US ‘Autopilot’ crashes
Sometimes this stuff just seems like a government shakedown. The NHTSA and the Biden administration in general is bitterly anti Tesla

jstream67··on AWS costs every programmer should know (2019)
I've always been bad at math but isn't 4TB for $400 approximately $0.10/GB ?

As another commenter mentioned EBS is quite a bit better than just a SSD in a number of ways. You can resize it, it has published resiliency numbers, quick and easy snapshots, etc etc

Also worth noting that the newest generation (GP3) is 0.08/GB/Month although like all things Amazon there are other charges to take into account.

jstream67··on Former U.S. congressman, operative pleads guilty to election fraud charges
Election fraud should be concerning to everyone, not just conservatives.

I'm also not sure what you are stating is racist conspiracy nonsense - I only see one comment from OP at the moment.

jstream67··on Carmakers feel chip crisis easing
I'm having a hard time navigating that site and getting any data out of it. Is it considered a reliable source of information? It seems to only have data for the first generation Model 3 from 2018. They also seems to count stuff like replacement of the 12v battery.

The writeups of high mileage Tesla's that I have read have not mentioned very many repairs - and that seems to be the general consensus on the owner's forums.

Note that software updates are also considered 'recalls' on Teslas now.

one data point on a high mileage model 3 : https://electrek.co/2020/09/26/tesla-model-3-high-mileage-ex...

jstream67··on Carmakers feel chip crisis easing
That would probably be Tesla? I suppose it depends on your definition of repair-ability. Telsa has a high degree of parts compatibility and seems able to keep even the older 2012 era Model S repaired.

There are a lot of high mileage Teslas out there. Most of Tesla's negative reputation seems to be people complaining about fit and finish (paint, panel gaps). The actual mechanical reliability seems to be quite higher than a normal ICE car. However EVs are still pretty new so long term data is still being collected.

jstream67··on Tesla’s ‘phantom braking’ problem is getting worse
yeah gotta agree. I suspect it is software version dependent - the most negative comments here always seem to be from folks who don't own teslas - whereas people who do seem to be mostly saying that the issue is getting better not worse.

Tesla topics seem worse than political topics on HN for triggering blind rage

jstream67··on Ceiling Air Purifier
Neat idea however air filter changes would be extremely expensive as its about 5x the air filters of a conventional purifier - which already seem to cost around 50-100 dollars to replace.
jstream67··on Ask HN: If Kubernetes is the solution, why are there so many DevOps jobs?
If you are on AWS you should check out ECS Fargate (serverless). It is really really good. Probably one of their more polished products.

If you want to stay on the Kubernetes route check out k3s. Super easy to setup and usable for small production workloads

jstream67··on Ask HN: If Kubernetes is the solution, why are there so many DevOps jobs?
As far as I can tell from doing years of contracting for non-FANG mid to large size companies -- they basically do their best to copy whatever trends they see coming out of FANG. There is no thought behind it.

Kubernetes and 'DEVOPS' are the new hotness at non-FANG companies as they are always 5-10 years behind the trends. Expect to see more of it before it goes out of fashion.

Also DevOps is just a title. Nobody read the book, nobody is trying to create what the original guy at Google or whatever had in mind. It is just a all encompassing job doing the same activities that the sysadmin used to do. HR tells companies that they should rename their sysadmin departments to DevOps departments and everything else continues as normal.

jstream67··on Ex-Google Tech Lead Brags About How He Used to Trash Women's Résumés
yeah i'm remembering why I got into his channel now - he had a lot of content on his minimalist philosophy that I found interesting.

The whole 'techlead' thing did always seem like a joke, he was definitely either making fun of himself, or making fun of the prestige of working for the big tech companies.

I haven't watched any of his recent videos but it seems like he has shifted focus to just making $$. Maybe he should have tried to hold onto a tech job :D

jstream67··on Ex-Google Tech Lead Brags About How He Used to Trash Women's Résumés
TechLead does not strike me as 'far-right'. He spent enough time in California working for Facebook and Google that I would be shocked if he is anything other than far to mid left.
jstream67··on Ex-Google Tech Lead Brags About How He Used to Trash Women's Résumés
haha I saw 'Tech Lead' and was wondering if it is the 'TechLead' guy from youtube -- yup sure is [https://www.youtube.com/c/TechLead/videos].

I used to watch his videos occasionally because I liked his dry humor and quirky takes. However his humor eventually got so dry that I am unable to tell what is a joke and what is real anymore. Looking back I think it is possible that everything on his youtube is made up.

Lately he seems to have optimized heavily towards generating youtube clicks. This seems to be a pretty obvious case of him deliberately generating controversy to drive traffic.

jstream67··on Ford’s electric pickup can power a house for days
worth noting that the electric F-150 does not use a heat pump yet for some reason so cold weather performance will probably be poor.

I'm not sure why anyone is making EVs without heat pumps - that is something Tesla pioneered years ago - and seems to be the obvious route to take for heating.

jstream67··on Mental illness, mass shootings, and the politics of American firearms (2015)
Nobody was talking about reducing access to cars after that guy ran over a ton of old folks in Kenosha a couple months back. In fact no one is talking about it at all as he does not fit the correct political narrative
jstream67··on Mental illness, mass shootings, and the politics of American firearms (2015)
two recent examples : Trump pushes the ATF to 'redefine' bump stocks as machine guns - thus illegally creating a new law.

Biden bans ammo imports from Russian - the main source of 7.62x39 ammo - one of the most common rifle rounds in the US. This massively spikes the cost of ammunition.

Biden has also pushed the ATF recently to start more shenanigans with redefining things in relation to SBRs, Pistol Braces, and Supressor parts. It remains to be seen what effect this will have.

I can tell you aren't a gun owner of course but you might still find the ATF interesting. Basically they 'reinterpret' things as they see fit and thereby things that were legal become illegal (but almost never the other way around). Its a work around as they are basically creating new laws - however that is not legally a power assigned to them.

jstream67··on Mental illness, mass shootings, and the politics of American firearms (2015)
"There is way worse poverty, mental illness, lawlessness, corruption at every level in India. The only difference is easy access to guns."

Sounds like we should keep the guns ??

jstream67··on Mental illness, mass shootings, and the politics of American firearms (2015)
but you can argue 'for the children' in order to take away any freedom. Politicians do it so often it has become a meme. They are doing it right now to try and ban encryption for example..
jstream67··on Mental illness, mass shootings, and the politics of American firearms (2015)
thats how you end up with no freedom whatsoever - although i recognize that is a state of affairs that you may be comfortable with.
jstream67··on Mental illness, mass shootings, and the politics of American firearms (2015)
we have constantly and consistently 'compromised' by adding more and more gun laws. Oddly none of them prevent this kind of issue as it is already illegal to kill someone
jstream67··on Mental illness, mass shootings, and the politics of American firearms (2015)
only rich democrats would be allowed to own guns - for evidence see how concealed carry permits are handed out in blue areas. The government is incapable of wielding that level of power without massive corruption.
jstream67··on The Day George Soros Broke the Bank of England to Make $1.1B (2021)
https://nypost.com/2021/12/16/how-george-soros-funded-progre...

Oh come on :) You can't tell me you haven't heard of this?

jstream67··on The Day George Soros Broke the Bank of England to Make $1.1B (2021)
I'm not sure about 'Q', but he comes up a lot because he is where the 'far left' side of the democrats get most of their funding. He dumps large sums of money into local elections across the US to elect officials who will be soft on crime.

edit - this is why left wing groups try to shut down all discussion of him by screaming antisemitism, and why right wing groups are convinced he is the root of all evil.

jstream67··on Where are the low level system engineers?
I got excited because I thought this was talking about linux systems engineers and how that is a almost non-existent career path these days.

I would call people who write c/c++ code 'programmers' - interesting to see that title is not universal.

If you are wondering where all the c/c++ programmers (system engineers) are - they are in the defense industry - or at least all the ones that I know are.

jstream67··on Ask HN: Am I an arrogant or am I surrounded by incompetent people?
I work with a lot of Amazon AWS engineers as part of my job. I find that they are no better than any regular non AWS employee with some AWS experience. In many cases the Amazon employees are actually pretty new and have a lot less experience than the contractors they are working with - but their egos are massive.

The main thing that is different about the AWS folks is they expect people to treat them like they are geniuses because they work at Amazon. Whatever solution they come up with becomes "the gold standard" because of who they work for, even if it doesn't work. The other thing that sets them apart is they can spin up free amazon accounts to test things - which is an incredibly massive advantage that they do not extend to contractors

jstream67··on “Fuck You” Money
yeah I think that is a better way of phrasing it.

I suppose most people are better in person than they are on twitter - I should stop reading people's twitter accounts :D
