Gold does not generate revenue... its still worth 11 trillion
jslove··on Ask HN: Why is Firefox losing marketshare and how would you save it?
previous one - now stellar ceo wasn't great either
jslove··on Discord is a black hole for information
I am not sure why all the crypto channels are on discord. Why not an open source system like matrix?

Twitter is also so much better... but people don't DM much.

jslove··on Ask HN: Tools to visualize data in SQL databases?
As you get deeper into it they hook you into the server and other stuff and it ends up costing 000s.

Pandas is better but requires programming.

jslove··on Mozilla Foundation pausing cryptocurrency donations
there were a couple implementations of stellar blockchain projects in nigeria that used sms as a base technology.
jslove··on Web3 is centralized
yes with taproot that just went live. there is also bitcoin liquid which is hidden as well.
jslove··on Web3 is centralized
with taproot bitcoin lightning transactions can be mostly private, scalable, not using energy, and cheap.
jslove··on Ask HN: Are paradigm shifting breakthroughs rarer or is it a bias in my eyes?
I think that changes are happening faster and slower than you imagine.

We are very bad at exponential math. I think changes in birth control, dating online, and social changes are faster than ever before.

The developed world will shrink and people couple up in ways people only 5 decades ago couldn't imagine.

Governments and societies are not ready for this or a system where we need to work less. John Maynard Keynes in Economic Possibilities for our Grandchildren opined that, by 2030, the average work week would be around 15 hours (3 hours per work day).

jslove··on Singapore: Sovereign City
Personally I think they:

1) benefited from Indonesia (refining their oil etc) like HK did for china back in the day and cheap labour

2) Now benefit from HK Chaos with China as a kind of Switzerland of Asia

3) Are hard to compare with a large country

MS just tries to embrace, extend and extinguish ubuntu(linux)

They are basically IBM in the 1970s/80s. I give them 20-30 more years and they will become irrelevant.

jslove··on Financial innovations brought by technology
Oanda uses Western Union in its back end. They gave up their license for money transfer a while back due to regulatory issues.

Stellar blockchain is trying to do something innovative in this space but is slow to get volumes.

jslove··on Financial innovations brought by technology
And banking in Canada is behind many places. Lithuania, Estonia would be examples.

I lived in Finland in early 90s - they had already gotten rid of cheques. Russia with Qiwi kiosks is quite innovative.

Why did banks want to get rid of cheques and why did they stay? The settlement was fast near the end with imaging etc. Basically Free. What did we get? email transfer? fuck I worked on building that in 2000. Can't believe it is still there with shitty limits for businesses.

Paysera out of lithuania. Mr Tango. there are a few
jslove··on Financial innovations brought by technology
those are typically sub accounts - not full accounts.
jslove··on Financial innovations brought by technology
Depending on the bank regulator there may need to be some equity behind the accounts.
jslove··on Financial innovations brought by technology
Japan has had this since the late 1970s/early 80s.

Real time settlement isn't really an innovation. Its just something the banks fight to protect their float.

- Using MS office pricing to push corporate to MS Cloud.

And the rest of the people should be using pandas, a database, or data visualization tools (tableau) instead.

Yes microsoft still has a near monopoly on the office after 30 years. I am not sure why the competition bureau only focused on internet explorer and not ms office bundling.
