Ah, curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!

---------

I write software. I'm a master's student at Georgia Institute of Technology. My academic interests are in the fields of Machine Learning and Systems programming. I work in the financial industry as a developer. I mostly write C# at work.

I enjoy working with the ML family of functional programing languages(F#, SML, oCaml). I dabble in a little Haskell, C, and C++.

jskonhovd··on Google's Free Deep Learning Course
I would start with the nano degree program if you don't have any prior knowledge of ML.

Udacity has a Linear Algebra review course, but I don't believe it is public for now. I had taken a linear algebra course before I took the GT ML class, but I wasn't a expert by any means. I don't believe you will need a deep understanding of linear algebra before taking this class. Singular value decomposition might come up. I think if you are familiar with everything in the following pdf you should be fine.

http://minireference.com/static/tutorials/linear_algebra_in_...

If you are motivated, you will do fine. Good luck!

jskonhovd··on List of the Most Popular MOOCs
I typically hate ranking lists like this, since I believe student completion rates are more important than enrollment. However, I did find some joy in finding a new MOOC I could add to the backlog of courses I need to take.
jskonhovd··on So you're learning OCaml
I like Real World Functional Programming by Tomas Petricek if you are already doing C# development.
jskonhovd··on Seattle, in Midst of Tech Boom, Tries to Keep Its Soul
I don't think it's far to compare any city to New Orleans. I think everyone from the South is a little bit jealous of the culture of New Orleans. It's just a amazing place.
jskonhovd··on On how Jet.com chose F#
FAKE is awesome. The entire F# ecosystem is pretty impressive.
jskonhovd··on B. B. King, Defining Bluesman for Generations, Dies at 89
It will be a sad weekend in Memphis. There are no words to describe what he means to that city. We lost a legend.
jskonhovd··on F# Survey 2015 Results
I have only used F# for a couple months, but I have a decent background in ML thanks to the Dan Grossman's incredible programming languages course.

https://www.coursera.org/course/proglang

I would say that if I can use F# Data or Deedle on a project, I will. Those tools totally make it worth learning a little F#.

jskonhovd··on Massive study on MOOCs
I think the TAs/graders will start to scale. There are some amazing TAs in this program. From my experience, I think some of the best are also current students in the program. I think the network effect of having so many students will have a big impact. I think you will start seeing companies encouraging employees to be TAs just for the ability to screen for potential employees.

I did the same with my twin. It's quite common from my understanding.

If you are interested in some studies on HIPAA compliance, I would suggest reading the work by Dr. Annie I. Antón on requirements engineering.

HIPAA is seriously complex piece of legislation.

jskonhovd··on Rent Control Creates Higher Rents in SF
While you all are enjoying your high rents, I would like to brag about my hometown Memphis, TN. We just got some hype in the WSJ.

"In a nod to the youngsters, the survey found that the top markets offering “the right live/work/play environment” for millennials were Nashville, Brooklyn, Portland, and Memphis."[1]

In all seriousness, I think its a shame that SF can't keep up with housing. It's a tough problem. I don't envy the people in Government that have to balance all the different interests.

Then again, I would hate it if the majority of my paycheck went to my rent.

jskonhovd··on 2015 Chromebook Pixel
Sometimes, you want to spend your money supporting a company that supports the development of Linux.

Dell and Google have a better record on this front, and the XPS 13 and the new pixel are "solid gear".

jskonhovd··on 2015 Chromebook Pixel
I am glad they gave this model a reboot. If I was in the market for a new linux laptop, this would be a my number one choice over the XPS13 as a close second.

I am glad more companies like Dell and Google are supporting linux.

jskonhovd··on Google Code Jam 2015
This reminds me of the busy beaver problem.
jskonhovd··on Online Degrees That Are Seen as Official
That must be CS6505 after the drop date. I joke, I think we had at least 200 people in that class, but there was a good amount who dropped.

I am guessing you are in CS6290, or one of the newer courses.

jskonhovd··on Quantitative Economics with Julia [pdf]
I took a machine learning course last spring, and I also had the choice of language to use. I thought about Julia, but I just felt I was going to be taking on to much in a short amount of time.

I ended up using Weka for parts of the class, and python using scikit-learn for the other parts.

However, I would say I am regretting not trying R. The other students in my course really liked it.

jskonhovd··on A Software Engineer’s Adventures in Learning Mathematics
No, most ABET school's require those courses. Also, if you ever try to get your FE/EIT you will need those courses.
jskonhovd··on Machine Learning Course by Tom Mitchell
I am assuming he means at a undergraduate level. If you need a probability and statistics book to refresh, I can recommend "All of Statistics" by Wasserman.
jskonhovd··on Machine Learning Course by Tom Mitchell
I used this book in my Machine Learning course last spring at Georgia Tech. I wouldn't consider it out of date. It is missing a few topics like SVMs that we covered, but otherwise it's a good introduction.
jskonhovd··on Large Scale Deep Learning – Jeff Dean [pdf]
I disagree. I believe that the foundation you will learn in statistics, linear algebra, and other mathematics would be worth the effort to any computer scientist. You would enjoy the introduction Machine Learning courses on Udacity or Coursera.
jskonhovd··on How to Get a Quant Job in Finance
Do you have any advice for a back office developer trying to move into the front office? I am getting my master's part time from a good program in CS with specializations in Systems and Machine Learning. But, I am worried that my back office experience will get me stuck in those type of roles.

jskonhovd··on Swift Has Reached 1.0
I don't know if Swift would be the best language to learn programming. Python is probably a better option. I would avoid platform specific languages until you are hired to work in that space. Open platforms like Python are much easier than close platforms to get started in Computer Science.

A good place to start with python would be the Introduction to Computer Science course on Udacity.

https://www.udacity.com/course/cs101

If you are interested in ML, I can recommend taking the Programming Languages course on Coursera after the python course.

They do. For example, UBS is moving 1,000 jobs to Nashville.

However, These things take time. It's a big risk to move your company to a different place. It's a even bigger risk if you can't hire people in that new place.
