Ah, curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!

---------

I write software. I'm a master's student at Georgia Institute of Technology. My academic interests are in the fields of Machine Learning and Systems programming. I work in the financial industry as a developer. I mostly write C# at work.

I enjoy working with the ML family of functional programing languages(F#, SML, oCaml). I dabble in a little Haskell, C, and C++.

Really? I guess you have a narrow definition of luxury.
jskonhovd··on 72% Of Professors Who Teach Online Courses Don't Think Students Deserve Credit
MOOCs have been a blessing to me. However, I understand that credits are not possible until they solve the issue of cheating. But lets not be naive and think cheating doesn't happen at plenty of standard university's around the world.

I like work for pie better. This just seems creepy.
jskonhovd··on Bill Gates: Capitalism means male baldness gets more funding than malaria
Capitalism is not the problem. It's our culture. We need to find a way to funnel more people into STEM jobs. The west has failed. India and China have drastically different governments but they both have been able to do one thing. Produce Engineers.

Food is expensive for a large family with a decent mortgage payment. Also, Remember when you have a family your career mobility drops dramatically. I know I won't have kids until I am 30, without going into debt of course.
jskonhovd··on The hypocrisy in Silicon Valley's big talk on innovation
Sign me up anytime for anyone of those projects, but wait will it pay as much as my mediocre average crud software developer job??
jskonhovd··on The hypocrisy in Silicon Valley's big talk on innovation
I think everyone on this thread would agree that people can pick winners, but some would argue that the government has been inefficient about picking those winners in the past. I personally think that there is a lack of scientifically literate people in our government, outside of Steven Chu, compared to the VC community who can pick winners.

I remember myself in my freshman Calculus 1 class. Wow... I was not prepared.
jskonhovd··on The Worst-Run Big City in the U.S. – San Francisco (2009)
I don't think that the issue should be between public and private companies building these systems. I believe the lack of engineers in the public sector is more likely to blame for the incompetence of public engineering projects. How many scientists and engineers are in congress? Its hard to hire for a job you have never done.
jskonhovd··on Sweden To Charge TV Tax For Anyone With A Computer or Tablet
"radio and television that is free from political influence". Sorry, I believe your opinion is incorrect. Any form of non-trivial media has some sort bias.
jskonhovd··on U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz Issues Statement on Aaron Swartz Case
Completely agree. There's no place for people like her in our society. I hope this kills her career, but I doubt it. Even if he gets fired she still will be corrupting the system in some capacity with her influence. But at least she won't end up with a job like Marsha Blackburn.
jskonhovd··on Introducing Graph Search
This creeps me out more than anything. I already know where I like to hang out and who my friends are... I go to freenode.
