Ah, curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!

---------

I write software. I'm a master's student at Georgia Institute of Technology. My academic interests are in the fields of Machine Learning and Systems programming. I work in the financial industry as a developer. I mostly write C# at work.

I enjoy working with the ML family of functional programing languages(F#, SML, oCaml). I dabble in a little Haskell, C, and C++.

jskonhovd··on Ask HN: What does your home office look like?

Great job on PyTN!!!
jskonhovd··on Why I'm Moving My Business From San Francisco To St. Louis
St. Louis is great. I wouldn't live there. It's very similar, at least in my experience, to my hometown of Memphis. The Italian food is obviously better, but we have barbecue. :)

America has a lot of great cities. They all don't have the technical talent level that San Francisco has, but good culture is not monopolized in San Francisco.

jskonhovd··on Demonstration at Home of Google Developer. Google Bus Blocked in Berkeley
I don't know how I would respond to this. If I had a family, I would be completely terrified for the safety of my kids. I guess when it comes to family its hard to not be irrational. Anyway, I guess I would stay calm and call the cops, and unfortunately think about moving.
jskonhovd··on Eero Saarinen's Bell Labs, Now Devoid of Life
There are so many cool building in the States that just get abandoned. I hope they find a anchor tenant and save this place. It reminds me of the Sterick Building in Memphis, not architecturally but I just feel sad to see a beautiful place go to waste.
jskonhovd··on Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition review
I am guessing you are referring to the USB 3.0 DisplayLink Docking Station. Yes, DisplayLink has issues with supporting Linux. We can only hope that Dell and other PC manufacturers will put pressure on them to support Linux.
jskonhovd··on Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition review
Great laptop. I got mine over Christmas and I have no complaints. I hope Dell continues to support Linux.
jskonhovd··on Accidental Tax Break Saves Wealthiest Americans $100 Billion
I understand that. I just moved back to my home town from Nashville. I am paying the same amount for my 3 bedroom home as my studio apartment. I must say my wife and I are much happier, and it will be great to have our parents around when we have kids.
jskonhovd··on Accidental Tax Break Saves Wealthiest Americans $100 Billion
I am pretty sure that's what happened to Mikhail Khodorkovsky.
jskonhovd··on PyTennessee Schedule Announced
This looks amazing for only 50 dollars. I hope my wife lets me go. This makes me proud of my state. :')

jskonhovd··on Engineer's Solution: Neutral Redistricting so Reelection is Less Assured
Proportional Representation is a much better way to give representation to minority groups.

jskonhovd··on Engineer's Solution: Neutral Redistricting so Reelection is Less Assured
This is absolutely a better method that the current process of gerrymandering. Texas, Illinois, Florida, and California are awful.
jskonhovd··on US shutdown: Senate reaches fiscal deal
I still don't understand why we don't use algorithms to fix gerrymandering.

jskonhovd··on Rather than savage cuts, Switzerland considers “Star Trek” economics
Significantly?? That is pretty bullish. Are you saying the supply of labor will drop dramatically for undesirable jobs? Or there won't be a underclass willing to work for less pay?
jskonhovd··on Rather than savage cuts, Switzerland considers “Star Trek” economics
That is an issue the Swiss need to prevent with the implementation of this law. Also, They will need to maintain productivity.

I would be happy if this works, but correct implementation of this law is the hard part.

jskonhovd··on Starting an Airline
We definitely need something like that in the Southeast. Our infrastructure is so awful. My dream would be high speed rail between all the major cities and SEC colleges, and Panama City.
jskonhovd··on How to Make School Better for Boys
As a person who attended a Title 1 high school, I saw a lot guys who came from single parent homes get kicked out after freshman year. I mean a lot them didn't understand the concept of not talking, but at times I felt like a lot teachers where just out to get them.
jskonhovd··on Principles of Reactive Programming

jskonhovd··on 25 year-old's company makes millions on cracked iPhone screens [video]
Phone repair and insurance is a huge business. This seems alright. A intelligent consumer can find a deal better than 200$, but convenience is the more important to a lot a people. Some people don't care how expensive it is, they need their phone the next day.
jskonhovd··on Yahoo to Acquire Tumblr
The same way the Groupon IPO was good for Chicago?
jskonhovd··on Yahoo to Acquire Tumblr
This is a strange comment to me. Does buying a large corporation make you relevant? I didn't see people making the same comment after Google bought YouTube and Motorola, or when Facebook bought Instagram. Now those companies have been attractive places to work for a long time, arguably since they where founded. I don't believe that Yahoo has the attractive engineering culture that Facebook or Google has. I believe if they screw this acquisition up, it will be the nail in the coffin for yahoo. They will go the way of AOL. I think Mayer has the toughest job in Technology right now, I hope this is the move that will spark the turn around.

jskonhovd··on Why Professors at San Jose State Won't Use a Harvard Professor's MOOC
MOOCs give me the ability to continue my education without doing into debt and delay having a family. Education should be free. San Jose State is probably a better school than where I got my degree, but I don't believe for a second that every class is taught by a caring well paid professor. They use TAs, Graduate Assistants, and over worked nontenured visiting professors just like any other cashed strapped University.
