jsilence··on Honk: An ActivityPub server with minimal setup and support costs
To me it looks like a personal/small group publish only platform. The Honks can be easily syndicated to other platformes where replies and and discussions take place.

Looks like sound design for when you wish to have control over your output channel without bearing the burden of moderation.

Nice!!

jsilence··on Much less than, Much greater than symbols
Astounding to see that an MIT graduate "rejects the scientific consensus on climate change " (Wikipedia).
jsilence··on Chekhov's Gun
Good luck applying this to the "Lost" series!
jsilence··on The open calendar, task and note space is a mess
Interesting! Does it support CalDAV?

OP might want to take a closer look at SoGo.

Ah, did not know that! Thanks!
jsilence··on In Chile three border collies are planting seeds (2017)
Why not put the seeds in the Water that is being used by the planes to extinguish the fires?

Maybe not in the first run/flight, but in the later ones, when a fire has been taken out almost completely.

And even when not using the fire fighting planes I think spreading the seeds with a helicopter would be much faster and more efficient.

jsilence··on Discord has won over gamers. Now it wants everybody else
Yeah exactly!

Maybe that's why users should focus on protocols and not on Platforms.

jsilence··on My mouse driver is asking for a firewall exemption (2019)
My point was, that obviously it is possible to program a mouse driver very effciently.

And even if it were a full blown cross compatible mouse driver with a lot of device features it is hard to fathom why such a driver would require more than a megabyte or a couple of megabytes of space. The basic functionality can be realized in less than 30k.

We had the whole operating system with GUI (Win3, OS/2 and Linux)run in 4 Megabytes. Sure it was snappier with 8 Mb, but that is still a far cry from the minimum requirements the commercial OS offerings come today.

The way we are wasting ressources is simply insane

jsilence··on My mouse driver is asking for a firewall exemption (2019)
I remember the times when you would load the mouse driver into the memory above 640k of your 1Mb RAM PC. It was around 30kb in size.

That is 'one Megabyte' RAM, not Gigabyte.

jsilence··on Lenovo Selling Linux Laptops Directly in the US
I read that as a 'tongue in cheek' comment.
jsilence··on What if a deadly heatwave hit India?
One thing everybody can immediately do is to eat much less meat.

Cut it down to a really good and well produced $steakthing on sundays and skip the crappy everyday burger or switch that to veggieburgers.

Don't have to become vegan. Simply reduce volume.

jsilence··on Plants, heavy metals, and the lingering scars of World War I
Very very very expensive.
jsilence··on How far could a spaceship go if we never ran out of thrust? (2020)
Why does the road cross the chicken?
jsilence··on How far could a spaceship go if we never ran out of thrust? (2020)
To boldly go where no one has gone before!
jsilence··on How far could a spaceship go if we never ran out of thrust? (2020)
Nah, just put a solar panel at the front of the ship. Free energy!!
jsilence··on Supercritical CO2 Tech Team
The sudden decompression will cool down the CO2 rapidly. To the point where it will become dry ice. This will slow down the release speed significantly. It is still not nice and probably a risc, but not als large as you estimate.

Actually you can make dry ice like this: get a CO2 cinder upside down and open valve into a cloth bag.

jsilence··on A street snack that has baffled botanists
Usually the professors have a bunch of PhD students working on topics the prof specializes in. So yes and no.

I really wish fixing the Maildir store implementation would be a higher priority so that the local mailstore can be shared with other mail clients.

His stuff is simply mind blowing. And as others mentioned, Hergé (BE) and Moebius are giants of the comic olympus.

Also the works of Marc-Antoine Mathieu are highly recommended!

It IS culture.

It has been scientifically proven that solar and wind can easily cover our collective need. Please stop spreading this lie.
