jsilence··on Canon sued for disabling scanner when printers run out of ink
Not to be meant snarky, but I think the office world should strive to print much less at all.

Working at a University it is mind boggling to me how much paper is waster because someone internally decided they need a real signature. Not all my colleagues are savyy enough to paste a scanned signature into a pdf.

jsilence··on SSH Tunneling Explained
Using Zerotier for this for quite a while now and can confirm it is working quite nicely.

TailScale might be an interesting alternative. Even more so as with headscale there is an Open Source server side implementation. Have not tested neither of those though.

jsilence··on AwesomeWM
I really like tiling window managers and wish there were more desktop integration oriented projects like Regolith for the i3 window manager.
jsilence··on Autonomous drone navigates independently through the forest at 40 km/h
A mandatory gun for every person, but everyone only gets one slug.
jsilence··on Python 3.10
Whats up with those parentheses for context managers?

Python? Parentheses? I'm baffeled.

jsilence··on PayPal raises fees for most domestic transaction types to 3.49% + $0.49
"Also, merchants are banned from adding surcharges for debit and credit card transactions in the EU & UK."

Any pointer to this legislation would be appreciated.

The local swimming pool lately started adding the transaction fees to the ticket after the sale.

jsilence··on Dune: A Shell by the Beach
Impressive indeed. But not sure whether I'd want a widget system built into my shell. Sort of breaks the UNIX philosophy, doesn't it?

edit: fixed typo

jsilence··on Footnotes now supported in GitHub Markdown
Makes me wonder, since there is evil mode and opinionated Emacs disributions like Spacemacs und Doom Emacs, whether there is a potential for an org-mode focussed and optimized Emacs distribution.

Ease of use should be one of the core goals, then.

jsilence··on Footnotes now supported in GitHub Markdown
Nothing beats org-mode.
jsilence··on Ask HN: Any good text-to-speech solutions for someone who cannot talk normally?
No first hand experience, but emacspeak is a long term contender in this field.
jsilence··on Using RSS to replace social media
Brodie Robertson is one of the Linux Protonerds on YT worth watching.
jsilence··on Using RSS to replace social media
He does not seem to be a complete mindless dummy. Ever tried to contact and argue with him? I'd honestly watch that.

Same thing with Jordan Peterson. I must not agree with his stand points and positions, but his arguments are compelling at times and it is fun watching and following his stuff. I can only broaden my view if don't look into the same direction all the time.

jsilence··on Using RSS to replace social media
> when plenty of other, better, and more qualified people can talk cogently about the same topics

You mean Brodie?

jsilence··on Using RSS to replace social media
I share this experience. Frustrating. But made me give up on FB completely. For good.
jsilence··on Using RSS to replace social media
Yeah we know. Does not keep me from cloning his st config. But yes, I liked watching his stuff much more when he was going thru his Linux/Dektop setup or advocating useful but little known command line tools.

Not unlike Scott Adams. I find Dilbert funny. Am I supposed not to laugh because his political views do not align with mine (at all)?

jsilence··on Show HN: Create a Minimalist Travel Diary
Does it fediverse? That would be awesome.
jsilence··on The Analog Thing: An open source, educational, low-cost modern analog computer
Does the filter ring?
jsilence··on The Analog Thing: An open source, educational, low-cost modern analog computer
Install VCV Rack and watch Omri Cohens videos. Warning: you might fall deep into this magnificen beautiful rabbit hole.
jsilence··on The Analog Thing: An open source, educational, low-cost modern analog computer
Might want to look into the Bespoke Synth.
jsilence··on Trailerduck is a smart e-bike trailer
Carla Cargo is a very similar product: https://www.carlacargo.de/
jsilence··on Why has the price of electricity in Europe reached record highs?
In the process of moving the mobility towards electrically powered vehicles all of Europe is going to need a lot more capacity. So all the disscussions about the hence and forth between France and Germany are quite moot.
jsilence··on The Big Escape: How the Ultra-Wealthy Avoid Paying Taxes and How to Fix It [pdf]
"...the Trump administration claimed that its corporate tax cuts would increase the average household income in the United States by $4,000. But two years later, there is little indication that the tax cut is even beginning to trickle down in the ways its proponents claimed."

jsilence··on The Big Escape: How the Ultra-Wealthy Avoid Paying Taxes and How to Fix It [pdf]
Yeah, not taxing the rich also does not work. See the trillion Dollar tax break Pres. Trump and the GOP implemented. The savings were supposed to somehow trickle down to the "lower decks", but this has proven not to happen.

Meanwhile the ultra rich are getting ultra richer and the rest is getting poorer.

So lets globally coordinated tax the rich for a while in a way that they can not evade their net wealth to some other country and lets see how well that works.

jsilence··on Ubuntu to Make Firefox Snap Default in 21.10
Maybe that will be the right time to switch to NixOS.

Have been uninstalling Snap on each Ubuntu release and will not start using it when they try to make it mandatory.

jsilence··on Bespoke Synth 1.0 – open-source software modular synthesizer
USB to Midi cables usually still need a computer or a synth with USB host functionality. You can not connect a USB Midi controller to a 5 pin din midi synth.
jsilence··on Bespoke Synth 1.0 – open-source software modular synthesizer
Some synths offer a USB Midi host functionality like the 1010music Blackbox, the Deluge and most of the Raspberry Pi based synths like the Monome Norns.
jsilence··on Transport noise linked to increased risk of dementia, study finds
Just take a look at the actual weight of the Tesla Model 3. It is listed between roundabout 1.600 kg and 1.800 kg which is absolutely in the ballpark of the two tons every other mid sized sedan weights. Example : Volkswagen model Passat: 1470kg - 1760kg.
jsilence··on Transport noise linked to increased risk of dementia, study finds
Yeah, but also they do not have a combusion engine made out of cast iron that sports a gearbox, clutch, starter, starter battery and generator.

An EV has a lot less components than a combusion car. So much so that they can add a second trunk where the heavy combusion engine normally sits.

jsilence··on Transport noise linked to increased risk of dementia, study finds
I fail to see why electric cars are significantly heavier than gasoline cars. Signifikant in the sense that it makes a differenc in noise.
jsilence··on Transport noise linked to increased risk of dementia, study finds
I loathe this every time when I have to fish and dig for the actual study that is being reported on in any media. To me that is bad journalism.
