jsilence··on Electric vehicles could fully recharge in 5 minutes with new cable design
It is not only the cable from the station to the car, but also from the grid to the station. And so on.
jsilence··on Appflowy – open-source Notion Alternative
Does not seem to be Open Source or offer a self host option like AppFlowy.
jsilence··on Pretty inline symbolic mathematics in Org-mode
John Kitchin is doing an amazing job on this front with Scimax.
jsilence··on Nap Framework: Real-time control and visualization platform
Not really sure what it is. Seems to be meant for projecting art and design. What does it control? What does it visualize? Was expecting an IoT framework. But thats not it.
jsilence··on Designing better file organization around tags, not hierarchies (2017)
If only the HFS and the OS using it would consistently yield the documents I recently used, across all file system dialogues, that alone would be a huge benefit for me.

Apart from that I'd love to see a tag based file system. Would use.

jsilence··on Nitrogen fertilizer shortage threatens to cut global crop yields – CF Industries
Wondering where we would stand if we had dumped all the funding and subsidies that went into nuclear fission and fusion research and into coal subsidies into solar panels.

Guessing dependency on oil and gas would be much much lower which also frees up a large chunk of the military budget.

jsilence··on Pdfsandwich
I'm wondering, is it possible to make the invisible text layer visible and editable somehow? Would be great for proof reading and editing incorrect characters.
jsilence··on Can we stomach the latest emerging food innovations?
Just to clarify: We are not vegetarians. We just try to cut down our daily meat consumption. But only if the alternative products actually taste good.

We're in the lucky position to have a hunter grand dad who is occasionally inviting us to highest quality meat meals. Unbeatable, and really appreciated and consumed very consciously.

jsilence··on Widespread security risk identified in phones and Bluetooth devices
Bluetoth as a standard ist pretty botched, sadly. If I understood correctly it is a bunch of only loosely related protocols between major versions. And implementations often seem to be lacking. At least my experience with BT is horrible and over time loaded with hate and anger.

Interesting to hear that Apple managed to solve the issues within their closed ecosystem. So at least a solution DOES exists. The world could be so much better! Agree that it would be nice it thos solutions could penetrate the non-Apple world also.

jsilence··on Widespread security risk identified in phones and Bluetooth devices
If you are sharing BT headphones between multiple devices this is horrible. I turn off BT on the device where I do not need the headphone to avoid BT connection confusion.
jsilence··on Making Emacs Popular Again (2020)
Maybe helm (https://emacs-helm.github.io/helm/) should be installed and preconfigured by default.

This solves a lot of the shortcomings of vanilla emacs.

jsilence··on Microsoft Loop brings back Google Wave?
Yes, I do remember OLE. My colleague and I were looking forward to CORBA which was promising to do similar things in a standardized way cross platform AFAIR. Did not gain traction.
jsilence··on Can we stomach the latest emerging food innovations?
It will never replace a good steak or similar high quality piece of meat. But as others in this thread mentioned as well, the new stuff can easily replace the low end and mid tier meat products.

Another pro is that the pea products are powders with long shelf life sans cooling. Can haz meatballs anytime without shopping fresh meat.

jsilence··on Can we stomach the latest emerging food innovations?
I think the quality of products from plant based alternative protein sources like peas will increas so much in the coming time that these will make the race.

We recently purchased a cross sampling of pea based "alternative meat" products and so far the quality is astonishingly good. One can taste that it is not meat, but texture and taste are so good that it does not really matter. It is going to become a staple in our household.

jsilence··on What 3°C of global warming looks like
> This makes me wonder if it is (or will become) economical for cities to use renewable energy to dehumidify the outdoors, and if so whether the yield of water would actually be useful.

Well people will likely first start cooling and lowering the humidity indoors with their ACs. The condensate might be used to feed the household hydroponic systems.

jsilence··on Show HN: CookLang – Recipe Markup Language
Skimmed the comments expecting an Emacs mode for it.
jsilence··on PiBox Mini – Modular Raspberry Pi Storage Server
Wondering if FreedomBox is a good fit for this device. Would love to see someone pre-configure it.
jsilence··on The fatiguing effects of camera use in virtual meetings
Getting older my hearing starts to degrade and in addition to that I have a slight tinnitus in the cricket sound range.

More than the camera bad audio quality it much more exhausting for me. Especially when project Partners are from other countries. Reverb, sub par microphone and a foreign accent is hard for me to compensate. Really wish everybody would invest in a decent lav mike and some acoustic treatment of hard walls.

jsilence··on The fatiguing effects of camera use in virtual meetings
In my context there is the unspoken agreement that we turn cameras on when a meeting starts and after greeting and checking the agenda everyone is free to turn their camera off.
jsilence··on Police can’t demand you reveal your phone passcode then tell a jury you refused
Thank you for detailing this!
jsilence··on Police can’t demand you reveal your phone passcode then tell a jury you refused
Also in other jurisdictions people have the right to not incriminate themselves by refusing to answer questions.

If I am allowed to refuse giving my pin code for unlocking the phone, it would be interesting whether the police is allowed to use your fingerprint to unlock your phone.

jsilence··on Police can’t demand you reveal your phone passcode then tell a jury you refused
It was possible to deny it. As of July this year it is mandatory.
jsilence··on Ask HN: Best way to host a website for 500 years?
Somewhat pricey, but buy a rover and have it sent to the moon. Program it to lay tracks in form of a QR code that contains the URL that encodes the whole website.

2nd hand rovers are somewhat hard to come by. But you wouldn't need all the fancy scientific equipment. Maybe a prototype of the bare rover is available somewhere.

Kudos if you pull that off and have the Moon QR URL website say : "never gonna give you up...".

jsilence··on Police can’t demand you reveal your phone passcode then tell a jury you refused
If the government has my fingerprints, would they be allowed to use them to unlock the confiscated phone?

Might explain why in Germany as of lately you have your fingerprints taken when getting your personal ID (Personalausweis).

jsilence··on 'Speed friending' events
I totally can not relate to the article at all. I would never start any activity with the goal of making friends. So much so that I find the concept of 'making friends' absurd. How would one be able to make, to fabricate, friendship?

Friendship is a sentiment I'd develop towards a person I like and value. And from this feeling I become a friend to them. If the feeling is returned, I am lucky and relish the moment of this mutual positive feeling.

If I were to feel lonely I'd start an activity I like. Start playing a team sport. Be a good team mate. Friendship will eventually develop over time when the group is right.

You like intellectual challenges? Join a Chess or Go club. For Chess or for Go. Friendships will develop if the time is right.

I find it very strange to attempt to fill the void by socializing.

jsilence··on Hardened wood as a renewable alternative to steel and plastic
Rhino shield probably
jsilence··on Carbon-neutrality is a tale: the race for renewables is burning Europe's forests
Well yes, do both, do your thing and pressure politicians. still no need to wait for the politicians.

I just loath people putting the blame on politicians, China, capitalism or some sort of world cabal just to have a rationale to continue their own unsustainable style of living.

jsilence··on Carbon-neutrality is a tale: the race for renewables is burning Europe's forests
You can reduce your electricity demand and then buy the remaining electricity from 'true green' providers.

Don't have to wait for the politicians.

jsilence··on Canon sued for disabling scanner when printers run out of ink
Probably true.

The point is that most of these "need a real signature" requirements are arbitrary and inhouse. Not really legal requirements. So the processes could easily be done without.
