jsares··on The LED's Dark Secret: "droop"
For once I actually like the headline. Guess I'm a sucker for a decent pun.
jsares··on Everyone Has a Blog - Even Mass Murderers
its interesting/scary? that reddit and 4chan have become the de facto sites for information gathering/organization/action
jsares··on US Marines Ban Twitter, MySpace and Facebook
It says they placed a network wide ban on them, I wonder how tight their security is. Can it be bypassed with a proxy or VPN? It seems the real issue is "...links to malicious sites in the hope a marine on R&R ... might click on them", they would be better served by locking down the systems that are accessing the Web, having an IDS and educating the soldiers on cyber risks.
jsares··on It's SO over: cool cyberkids abandon social networking sites
I'm tired of articles that disprove their own titles

"Clearly take-up among under 16-year-olds is very high … so we cannot say for certain whether this is people in a certain age group who are not setting up social networking profiles or whether it's a population shift which is reflecting people getting older and having a social networking profile that they set up two years ago," he said. "The main point is the profile of social networking users is getting older."

jsares··on Jobless IT graduate sues her college
All schools promise job placement assistance and in general it's very poor. The real issue is they can't put you in a job that doesn't exist.
jsares··on Dallas data center raided by the FBI based on false claims by former employee
It sounds like the FBI "acted stupidly" but the guy was no saint. In this thread he gives customer service that actually makes AT&T look good:

jsares··on SFGate inserts a link to the story when you copy text on their site. Try it
Esquire is doing the same http://www.esquire.com :

<!-- Tynt Tracer Beta --> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://tcr.tynt.com/javascripts/Tracer.js?user=aTIf7gthSr3P6...; <!-- //Tynt Tracer Beta --> </div>

jsares··on When Debtors Decide to Default
The difference with Student Loans is you can't just avoid paying them. With most debt you can discharge it through a bankruptcy but since 1998 you can no longer discharge student loans unless it would be an "undue hardship". After you default they will simply attach your wages for up to 25% of you after tax salary.
jsares··on Google Voice Gives Out Free Business Cards, Makes Switching #s Less Irritating
The link to the free cards doesn't even work now.
jsares··on Intel releases 34nm-based SSDs with 2x speed of previous drive
Since I stream most of my media I'm going to buy the 80GB as soon as they release it. Intel had worked through most of the problems with SSDs with the X-25 and with the price drop and improved performance this is a no brainer if you can afford it.
jsares··on Google Voice Apps For Android And Blackberry Are Here
Not sure if anyone is reading this but I said I'd report back so I am:

Google Voice installs easily

It integrates with voice dialing

It does send SMS but you need to use the Google Voice App instead of the standard Messaging App to send SMS

I got an error when I was on WiFi that prevented the dialer from working but I think that was due to a WiFi issue

Once I turned WiFi off it worked

If you look at incoming SMS in the standard Messaging App they all show as coming from a 406 number

But it does have the name of the person next to the number and they look better in the Google Voice App

jsares··on MacBook Pro, Thousands of Colors
Looks like the Sony TT line has an 8bit display:

jsares··on Google Voice Apps For Android And Blackberry Are Here
It makes the calls using the cellular voice network but it uses the data connection for text messages. At least it did in before I'll check it out first thing tomorrow and report back.
jsares··on HTC Hero - Full Flash, Skype over 3G, custom Android UI, multitouch.
I've got the G1 and I don't like the 'bend'. HTC should have made the scroll ball flush with the case if that's the reason behind it.
jsares··on The Economics of the HDMI Cable Ripoff
The reason I use HDMI is that it's a single cable that handles video and audio. I can plug in my notebook with a fairly thin cable and use my LCD TV as a second display. I've never had any issues with the onscreen menus but I don't think I'm outputting HDCP from my notebook.
jsares··on Linux - disk usage (du) human readable and sorted by size
this is my solution, comments?

du -s * 2>/dev/null | sort -n | cut -f2 | xargs du -sh 2>/dev/null

jsares··on The Nonstop, 24-7 CEO Salesman (2000)
He isn't at the top of his industry but he seems to be growing:

May 1, 2007 Movin’ on Up

The latest issue of Promotional Marketing Magazine-an independent publication dealing with the Promotional Products industry-listed the Top 50 Distributors in America. Just a few years ago, the Cavanaugh Marketing Network was ranked around 75th. In the latest rankings, Cavanaugh has climbed to # 34 the highest ranking of any promotional products agency in Pittsburgh.

jsares··on Undoing Meg Whitman’s eBay
craiglist is the first place I go to buy and sell used stuff. I do search eBay to get an idea on the price to set when I want to sell something but I don't like all the effort it takes to auction an item.
jsares··on Ubuntu 9.04 released

jsares··on Eric Schmidt reanimates el cheapo PC zombie
It's not about subsidizing the netbook alone. It's about subsidizing the mobile broadband connection as well. The problem is there doesn't exist a national eat all you can mobile broadband offer. Imagine if Google could wrangle one of the big 3g providers to give you a netbook plus all you can eat mobile broadband for $50/month. And they didn't restrict you from using the device as a WiFi access point so you could share the connection with your other devices. I'd sign up for that in a heartbeat.
