jron··on Pirate Weather: A free, open, and documented forecast API
I was really hoping https://merrysky.net/ had a graphical forecast similar to weather underground's 10 day. I've yet to find anything else that quickly shows everything you'd want to know in a single image. Even the mouseover timeline is perfection. It is so good and seemingly exclusive to WU that I sometimes wonder if they hold a patent for it.
jron··on Apple GPU drivers now in Asahi Linux
I only care because I enjoyed watching him reverse engineer in his easy to understand normal unmodified voice.
jron··on Apple GPU drivers now in Asahi Linux
So you actually think marcan gave Lina his streaming API key to pull off this April fools prank? Do you also think they conspired to use the same DE, editor, and tooling from the start to fool us all?
jron··on Apple GPU drivers now in Asahi Linux
There are only a handful of people in the world that can do this type of work and the odds of both of them being into live streaming and Anime is exactly 0. I have no idea why marcan decided to make his reversing magic unwatchable but I hope it stops soon. That said, he doesn't try to keep it a secret: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=effHrj0qmwk https://twitter.com/marcan42/status/1509926572488556546
jron··on BearSSL: A smaller SSL/TLS library
Is BearSSL still maintained? It looks like it hasn't been updated in almost 4 years.

If it works some of the time for state-level, it should work almost all of the time for anything below.

Here is a great talk on new SSS library from Daan Sprenkels at 34C3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojMFCpUt7OU

jron··on macOS Ventura is now available
Lockdown mode looks very usable despite the messaging that it is "designed for the very few individuals." Users can even exclude applications from Lockdown mode.

When Lockdown Mode is enabled, some apps and features will function differently, including:

Messages - Most message attachment types are blocked, other than certain images, video, and audio. Some features, such as links and link previews, are unavailable.

Web browsing - Certain complex web technologies are blocked, which might cause some websites to load more slowly or not operate correctly. In addition, web fonts might not be displayed, and images might be replaced with a missing image icon.

FaceTime - Incoming FaceTime calls are blocked unless you have previously called that person or contact.

Apple Services - Incoming invitations for Apple Services, such as invitations to manage a home in the Home app, are blocked unless you have previously invited that person.

Shared albums - Shared albums are removed from the Photos app, and new Shared Album invitations are blocked. You can still view these shared albums on other devices that don’t have Lockdown Mode enabled.

USB accessories - To connect your device to a USB accessory or another computer, the device needs to be unlocked. Configuration profiles - Configuration profiles can’t be installed, and the device can’t be enrolled in Mobile Device Management or device supervision while in Lockdown Mode.

Phone calls and plain text messages continue to work while Lockdown Mode is enabled. Emergency features, such as SOS emergency calls, are not affected.

jron··on Mastodon.technology Shutdown
I wasn't expecting permalink to be the comment section. Very cool project! I'm always on the lookout for an altruistic reddit contender.
jron··on Mastodon.technology Shutdown
Do you have plans to add comment functionality to littr.me/go-littr?
jron··on What hacking AOL taught a generation of programmers
Do you remember an old ICQ program that generated accounts with user defined numbers so long as they weren't already in use? The software was hosted on a page with quite a few other ICQ related applications. I'd love to find an archive of the site.

jron··on The Edited Latecomer’s Guide to Crypto
A little more than a decade to bootstrap an idea worth nothing to almost a trillion USD... Did you expect it to be valued at two-trillion USD instead? I can reach out to you when it gets there if you like.
jron··on Teclis – Non-commercial web search
Review sites are littered with advertising likely preventing any results from being indexed. It also doesn't help that most reviews are now in the form of video.
jron··on Teclis – Non-commercial web search
Thanks for making Kagi! I hope you and your team can figure out a way to make a flat monthly fee feasible so I can continue using the site!
jron··on Show HN: Spodcast, a Spotify podcast to RSS proxy
Thank you! I was using a 2nd Android browser with a fake User-Agent to use the Spotify web client after Spotifeed stopped working. I'll do whatever it takes to keep all my podcasts in AntennaPod.
jron··on Memory leaks are crippling my M1 MacBook Pro
I have Airplay disabled on both of my machines and only one has been impacted by the leak.
jron··on Memory leaks are crippling my M1 MacBook Pro
The iCloud enabled MacBook is the one leaking memory. I'm leaning towards a hardware issue because the iCloud setup is the OS default and the number of reported issues is still low.

Edit: A recent reddit thread may have correctly identified the WindowServer leak being related to the amount of full screen video played. My impacted MacBook is often used for Netflix/Hulu content. https://www.reddit.com/r/apple/comments/qos5n5/memory_leaks_...

jron··on Memory leaks are crippling my M1 MacBook Pro
I'm also experiencing this on 1 of 2 M1 MacBook Pro Max 32GB machines. I've performed a full wipe/restore on the faulty MacBook and the issue persists. WindowsServer is usually the faulty process consuming 20+ GB of RAM. The only difference between machines is one uses icloud and the other doesn't.

Given the similarities between both machines and application usage, I can't help but suspect some type of hardware issue is plaguing a percentage of machines out there.

jron··on Ask HN: What Apple alternatives are you switching to?
Is the trackpad comparable to a macbook? I've yet to see an equal or anything remotely close.
jron··on Longitudinal analysis shows durable immune memory after SARS-CoV-2 infection
This seems like the most important unasked question. Common sense would suggest the best case would be vaccination followed by repeated exposure to the virus yet hardly anyone is talking about it.
jron··on New Laptop: Thinkpad P14s
Are the trackpads anywhere close to macbooks yet? My XPS 13 is still awful and my previous thinkpad is worse than the XPS.
jron··on MNT Reform 2 DIY Kit Review
Will you offer the MNT Reform with the new SOM (Cortex-A72) when it becomes available? I wanted to pull the trigger on the first batch but needed something a bit faster than a Raspberry Pi.
jron··on Et Tu, Signal?
A workable fork would most likely require standing up new servers that would be isolated from the existing Signal user base. I think we'll see a handful of forks very shortly and it will be interesting to see how the new maintainers navigate the current landscape.
jron··on Et Tu, Signal?
Last I checked, the mobile clients are GPLv3 and the desktop client and server are AGPLv3. I assume a usable fork will materialize due to Signal's introduction of a token scam. Unfortunately, signal has the network effect and asking friends and family to move again will most likely fall on deaf ears. I'll move if the new project looks sustainable.
jron··on Bitcoin Is Worse Is Better (2011)
gwern stands out by having both a curious mind and the dedication to actually research and document the struggle for answers.

I wish our interests could have continued down the same path because for me, distraction is the real mind killer.

jron··on FreeBSD Core Team Statement on FreeBSD Development Processes
I'm just a systems guy too so I can't really make judgements on why so much input is needed for the implementation of a seemingly simple protocol. I disagree with there being smoke but I appreciate the reply and it seems like you're not alone in thinking something might be a little off: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=24430424
jron··on FreeBSD Core Team Statement on FreeBSD Development Processes
I have no doubt that DragonFly could handle higher throughput but for a home router at 1GbE or less, OpenBSD seems ideal assuming it doesn't add additional latency. Benchmarks are hard to find; if you know of any, please let me know.
