He said this sort of thing is getting more common and even if he did want to buy all of the required bits and bobs he wouldn't be able to fit them all in his van.
Even in the 'good old days', you weren't getting very far working on your car without things like gear pullers, timing guns and feeler gauges. All things that technically you could be using for other things, but not exactly in the average toolbox of someone that doesn't work on cars.

Seriously though, visual coding/drag and drop etc are great for non-technical users but in my experience the issue isn't code vs. icons. I worked in corporate workflow development for around 15 years using guess what, Lotus Notes, and the 'real' problem was getting end users to think programmatically, not remember syntax / tools. You can have all the easy to use tools in the world, but you still need to really be able to think through a process.

Connecting Spot instances to EBS volumes isn't really possible via their APIs though. Amazon's API seems to regard Spot Instances as stateless compute entities, you need to push the results to a real on-demand instance (with attached EBS Volume) or something like ec2.
If you have massive compute requirements, companies like

will do the hard work for you, otherwise with a bit of configuration work you can spin up a master node with an ebs volume along with a set of spot instances (of any type) to perform the work.
Checkout the Cloudformation template examples. There's bound to be something that's pretty close to your use case (including software installs etc).

I would imagine it's at least in the ball park if you have 100 servers..
