I’m terrible at writing these “about” sections. Look at my personal website, jrmann.com?

jrmann100··on Getting my personal data from Amazon was weeks of confusion and tedium
Wired Magazine recently did a feature on “Amazon’s Dark Secret” of what this mess looks like from the inside:

Tom Scott did a great analysis and interpretation of what an honest VPN ad might look like: https://youtu.be/WVDQEoe6ZWY

DuckDuckGo's !bangs[0] deserve a mention as well, where you can use an exclamation point with an (abbreviated) site name to forward your query to the site's internal search (try !hn).

(Using a plain ! anywhere in your query seems to do the same thing as \)

jrmann100··on I'm so sorry everyone. Or: why I'm switching to Cloudflare
This, except: if you're graduating high school, there's a chance you don't have a credit history, which might result in getting banned from due to failed identity verification.

Source: my own recent experience in registering before/after obtaining a credit score. privacy.com won't confirm if this was the cause.

Derek does a great job of explaining how YouTube shifted away from a subscription-based feed to a recommendation-based one.

Ironically, to combat the distractive/addictive tendencies this promotes, I use a browser extension[0] to hide recommendations and only browse my subscriptions feed.

jrmann100··on For developers, Safari is crap and outdated
The functionality exists, but the title, icon, and optional full-screen view are all you get (along with the tedium of updating proprietary <meta> tags).

iOS Add to Home Screen is a neglected bookmarking feature, buried within a context menu few users scroll into. It's effective, but presenting it as a viable alternative to Progressive Web Apps is unrealistic.

I found it a lot of fun to interface with the TI calculators directly using the wonderful ArTICL Arduino library[0]. You can cobble together a link cable to imitate another calculator and hook it up to your microcontroller of choice.

I enjoyed making a QWERTY keyboard and news app over WiFi using the tiny ESP-01 (as, coincidentally, @shakna suggested in this thread).

Keep in mind that the "Health Cards[0] are encoded as Compact Serialization JSON Web Signatures (JWS)". They're cryptographically signed by the state, so it's hard to fake them without having access to the issuer's key.

…that said, it assumes that client-side products will actually verify the health cards, which is not necessary when extracting the data.

Is this built with Slack's Block Kit[1]? The interface looks very similar, and it's a welcome sight.

I really enjoyed getting to know Thea and her work on an episode of the Embedded Podcast [1]. She has an infectiously positive outlook on open-source development.

jrmann100··on Jurigged – Hot code reloading for Python
I've been using watchgod [0], which seems to work similarly—not sure if jurigged also monitors all included modules, or is cross-platform-friendly. Anyone know the similarities/differences?

I know I'm the only one who's reading news on the Kindle Voyage, but I'm definitely adding this to my bookmarks list on the e-reader. Super cool!
jrmann100··on The Framework Laptop
This looks like a fantastic, albeit potentially costly, product, and I'm excited to see where it goes. For those of us who are happy with our current laptops but are still excited by the customizability of the Expansion Card system, are you considering creating USB-C hubs designed to work with the modules? The Cards obviously already adapt to USB-C but it'd be nice to have a dedicated hub to stack them and save space.
jrmann100··on Firefox 85 cracks down on supercookies
That's probably Firefox's own Firefox Multi-Account Containers[0]. Groups caches/cookies into designated categories for each tab (personal, work, shopping, etc.), with smart recognition for assigned sites.

jrmann100··on Firefox 85 cracks down on supercookies
Does this make Firefox's Multi-Account Containers obsolete? I just finished setting the smart cookie-grouping extension up, but it seems like this serves a functionally similar purpose.

jrmann100··on The Dreamup: A codeless alternative to the Web
The trouble I’ve found with English-based languages (Inform 7) is that if you go beyond the intended range of examples, you very quickly start having to learn specific syntax—syntax which could be expressed much more cleanly as traditional code. Always consider how a new language model can integrate or fall back on existing languages.
