jrib··on Best and worst decisions I’ve made
Might depend on what you eat but when I first started flossing, the gunk that I saw being removed was enough to convince me that flossing was a good idea.

It may depend a lot on the tightness between your teeth, for example, how beneficial it is?

jrib··on Best and worst decisions I’ve made
I remember being taught in school (United States in the early 90s) to brush teeth three times a day. This seemed odd to me since no one brought a toothbrush to school to brush after lunch.
jrib··on Contracts you should never sign
> why believe people are malicious when they could just as well be careless?

For those who like named things: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanlon%27s_razor

jrib··on Names should be cute, not descriptive
We use bear names. It is fun and at this point (for me) the names are second nature.

But the company merged recently with a couple of other companies and the confusion about polar bears versus grizzly bears versus panda bears is pretty funny at times (and counter-productive).

I try to use both the code name and the descriptive name. So now I say something like: "grizzly marshmallow roaster" instead of just "grizzly".

jrib··on Ask HN: What sub $200 product improved your 2022
Can you recommend the specific hearing protection you went with?
jrib··on Omg.lol – A lovable web page and email address
their status page is https://broke.lol/ . This is great.
jrib··on Ask HN: How many of you are open to Piracy again?
yeah, I canceled Prime a few years ago. I reasoned that if I needed the product fast then it would be faster to physically go to target or walmart. And if I didn't need it fast, then the default shipping would be fine.

Their add-on services all felt lackluster too. Most of the prime video content is not well-rated.

jrib··on Ask HN: Wanting to grow – what questions should you ask yourself?
> went into contracting for startups instead

Did you find these opportunities mostly through your personal network? What would you recommend to others looking to find similar opportunities?

jrib··on It's easier and faster to pirate an e-book, than it is to buy it
I dropped gmail for fastmail when google originally threatened to drop the grandfathered g-suite plans. Has worked great for me.
jrib··on Show HN: Pressn't – a site where you can only have a single post
Nice idea.

The color for links seems to be the default in most browsers: blue for links and purple for visited links. These colors are extremely hard to read against the site's background color. Are you able to style links so they are easier to read against the site's background color?

jrib··on Experian Vulnerability Shows Any Report with just SSN, DOB, ADR
"ADR" == "address" in this context

> All you needed was the person's name, address, SSN and DOB.

jrib··on Social Security denies disability benefits based on list with jobs from 1977
My fifth grade teacher had a condition that caused her to have seizures.

I remember it being very foreign and new to me. I had no first-hand experience with seizures before. But she just calmly explained what seizures were, what would happen, and what we should do. She designated a few students to call the nurse if she had a seizure and the nurse cared for her after that.

She did have a seizure a few times during the school year, but it didn't affect her ability to effectively teach us. She was one of the best teachers and one of the most positive people I have ever met.

She was a fantastic teacher and friend. Rest in peace, Ms. Osinski.

jrib··on Ask HN: Upskilling as a Data Engineer
You're implying it here, but I want to state it even more explicitly: create systems that allow you and your team to know when data problems arise!

These can be processes or programmatic but if nothing is looking for problems, then they often go unnoticed until they cause an issue big enough that can't be ignored.

jrib··on Ask HN: Password manager with user-defined cloud storage
I do not personally use it, but I think keepassxc is one to consider given your needs:

jrib··on Docker on MacOS is slow and how to fix it
yeah, I really wanted to buy a Linux laptop. I highly value battery life though and the m1 chip doesn't really have a competitor in that department.
jrib··on The ‘coasting’ workers who’ve checked out of their jobs
anyone else stuck not able to dismiss the pop-up overlay, paste this into your console:

    document.querySelectorAll(".zephr-overlay").forEach(x=>x.remove())
jrib··on ‘Unexpected item’: how self-checkouts failed to live up to their promise
I have a lot of gripes with this article...

Shoplifting is up? Compared to when? Surely there are factors other than the existence of self checkout?

The self checkout lines have bacteria? Do the regular checkout lines not? Seems like cleaning them regularly is an easy solution...

I like the self checkout mostly because it does seem faster to me. And I prefer to bag my own groceries.

During the pandemic, wegmans introduced a phone app that let you scan as you shop. That meant I could put things directly in my bag as I shopped. And at the end I just scanned the app at a self checkout register. That was the best shopping experience I've ever had.

Sadly wegmans did away with it also claiming too much loss from the app :(

jrib··on Deep work. Essentialism in asynchronous culture
I agree that scheduling regular time to focus is important. I try to start early and do most of my work in the morning when many people are not active. That helps avoid meetings and interruptions.
jrib··on Ask HN: What is the best thing you read in 2022?
I love the opening line of Neuromancer:

> The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel.

jrib··on Ask HN: What is the cheapest, easiest way to host a cronjob in 2022?
All free:

* free-tier vps on GCP or Oracle Cloud

* lambda job on AWS

I have a cheap VPS I use for other things and just run my cron jobs there.

jrib··on Argentina Wins the World Cup
My feed only showed analysis of the last pass. In your feed, did they review the previous pass too?
jrib··on Argentina Wins the World Cup
Argentina dominated most of the game up until France scored. Was a very fun game to watch.

I'm pretty sure Argentina's 3rd goal should have been revoked after a VAR review. Messi looks off-side for the second to last pass that starts the play. I assume VAR reviewed the ball on the goal line and the last pass but didn't look at the pass that started the play right before?

I wish the reviews were televised. We get to see the referees making decisions, why not the VAR communication too?

jrib··on When paper beats the screen
> Doodling on a phone is just not as satisfying.

Not the main point of the article, but that remark stood out to me.

I sometimes still take notes on paper. Doodling to pass the time or let my thoughts wander is relaxing.

I remember doing it all the time as a child. Do children still have this experience?

jrib··on Apollo Layoffs
not an expert, but my understanding is it depends on how the severance is paid off.

If the company keeps you on payroll and pays you weekly, then you cannot collect unemployment. If the company gives you a lump sum then you may be able to.

If a condition of the severance is that you sign a document saying you are quitting instead of being fired, then you cannot collect unemployment.

My understanding comes from recent googling because of similar layoffs that happened at my company. I'd welcome more informed thoughts on the matter.

jrib··on Ask HN: How to do that you need to do but not motivated at all?
sometimes, just starting is enough. Tell yourself you're just going to do some simple task that's necessary for what you want to accomplish. From there it's often easier to keep working
jrib··on Ask HN: What's your proudest hack?
I must have been about 12 years old. I wanted to rent a movie on DirectTV.

To rent a movie, a phone line had to be connected to the receiver box. The box would dial out to DirectTV and send over the information that "jrib purchased movie X".

I learned that I could connect two phones directly with a 9V battery and the right resistor in the middle. So I connected a phone line on one end to the DirectTV receiver and on the other end to random phone.

The receiver waited for a dial tone, so then I played a dial tone sound on repeat on my computer into the phone's microphone.

It worked and I got to see the movie!

I felt really guilty though so I told my parents a few days later and we let the satellite box connect to a real phone line to pay for the movie :)

This link explains how the phone circuit is setup: https://hackaday.com/2012/06/08/using-old-phones-as-an-inter...

jrib··on Unshackling Myself from Golden Handcuffs
I'm curious to hear from other people who did this if they wish they had done anything differently.

Do they wish they had structured their plans more for example, or did the freedom of not having any fixed goals and deadlines improve the experience?

jrib··on The Art of Command Line
What were the two tidbits for you?

Some notable ones for me:

* curl cheat.sh/command will give a brief "cheat sheet" with common examples of how to use a shell command.

* `sort -h` can sort the output of `du -h`

* https://www.gnu.org/software/datamash/

* https://catonmat.net/ldd-arbitrary-code-execution

jrib··on Writing by hand is still the best way to retain information
Writing by hand also lets me /think/ better.

I don't have to change tools to draw a shape or change the layout. I have a thought, and my hand creates some visual representation of that thought. There's no middle step.

jrib··on Amazon CEO Andy Jassy says layoffs will continue into next year
> In 2021, Jassy received $212,701,169 in total compensation, Insider reported in April, citing a proxy filing the company submitted. Only $175,000 of that came from his salary. The rest came from shares: He was awarded 61,000 shares that would vest over 10 years, worth $211,933,520, when he became CEO.
