jrace··on The FDA wants you to be able to buy a hearing aid without a prescription
"And my attempt at bluetooth connectivity for phone calls failed as the things could not stay sync'd during conversations. Better to just use a headset. "

And that is what you should use the money you paid for....getting proper follow up and adjustments, including making your BT work.

BT and hearing aids have been used for over 10 years.

jrace··on The FDA wants you to be able to buy a hearing aid without a prescription
That is a very realy situation for most people.

A hearing aid - AIDS you in hearing, but your brain does the processing and speech comprehension.

if you start wearing a hearing aid now you will just get lazier with your "hearing". Just like if your knees are sore, and you get a knee brace - when you should have done exercises to improve your muscles supporting your knee - the brace will do more harm than good.

How much would you pay for:

*Hearing test

* Hearing aid fitting

* Usage counselling

* Follow up adjustments

* Annual retest of your hearing

* Replacement of lost hearing aids

* Unlimited repair for 3 years ??

====== I got out of the Audiology field in 2015. At that time all the above was included for every hearing aid we sold (Prices varied from $750 / ear - $3600 / ear.

When I was in that field many companies tried "pay as you go" models, instead of bundles.

You know what happened? People paid the minimum (test, and fit) the never returned for repairs or re-tunings.

And then complained to everyone that "hearing aids don't work".

Buy a hearing aid today from any major provider in Canada and you get:

Initial test

Initial fitting

Follow up tests

Follow up re tunes

Counselling

repairs - including full replacement in case of loss

Batteries

In-clinic repairs and cleanings.

100% return, and in some cases $0.00 3 month trial period.

There is far more to fixing your hearing issues that just amplifying sound. Sadly, most people wait too long before trying a hearing aid, and give up because they hear too much noise.

Imagine returning your eye glasses because you still see ugly people.

I truly wish hearing aids were far cheaper, and that was a very hard part of my job and one of the reasons why I changed careers.

But who does the "proper" tuning?
jrace··on The FDA wants you to be able to buy a hearing aid without a prescription
All of that is currently available. (and has been for a decade)
jrace··on “Hacker X”–the American who built a pro-Trump fake news empire–unmasks himself
This "ethical hacker" needs to be charged with something severe - the damage he helped create is long-lasting and potentially resulted in 100,000's of deaths.
jrace··on Building a high quality audio system [video]
Your best audio on a motorcyle will be with "In Ear Monitors" and a personal audio player (like a phone or ipod).

These will have the benefit of also reducing wind and engine noises.

But will come with a safety issue.

jrace··on Covid vaccine immunity is waning – how much does that matter?
I was surprised that in my area (BC, Canada) this was not clearly expressed.

I have spoken with a few "anti-covid-vaccine" people who use this fact as a reason to not get it "It does not work, why should we get it?"

I wonder if this was better communicated at the start would have made more people, or less people get the vaccine.

jrace··on Retired Husband Syndrome
How many "stay at home husbands" whose wives are approaching retirement do you think are in Japan?
jrace··on Retired Husband Syndrome
His reward is " a level of adoration" which she awards to him for enabling her to socialize.

When I was younger I worked at a trucking company. This included both long-haul (gone for 1 week or more) and short-haul (gone for 12-14hrs).

A common thing I heard in the break-room was "If I worked a normal job I would be divorced by now".

jrace··on Physicist discovered an escape from Hawking’s black hole paradox
This site helped me to realize I had been tying one of my shoes wrong my entire life.
jrace··on Does Oil Come from Dinosaurs?
I think it is less about the myth being taught, and more about the truth not being taught.

I know I assumed Fossil Fuel = meant the fuel came from fossils, and the first thing that comes to mind when I hear "fossils" is dinosaurs.

I just never thought to look further than that.

jrace··on Norman doors are everywhere (2016) [video]
Depends on the size of the bathroom (at least in Canada) - you must not be able to reach the switch and the water source at the same time. Or use a GFCI protected switch.
jrace··on Noisy appliances: How loud is your house?
You may want to reconsider this.

Over use will cause your threshold of normal to be far lower than normal as you will have retrained your hearing to perceive when ANC on = normal. Then when ANC off = everything will be too loud. Everything.

jrace··on Why did bar ends go away from mountain bikes?
Today, maybe, but in the late 90’s when bar ends were popular there was a huge shit from cross country to downhill. Thats when we say full suspension get popular, and ski hill lift assisted runs getting more common.

Now i see more people shifting back to cross country.

At least where I live.

jrace··on Police say they found mafia fugitive on YouTube, posting cooking tutorials
I agree, keep in mind this criminal did not come clean on his own accord. There is no indication he would have ever come clean. All we know is that he did non-criminal activities on youtube.

For all we know he could have been operating a human-smuggling operation from his current local.

Either way he knowingly and purposefully avoided prosecution.

jrace··on Hit songwriters ask pop stars to stop taking credit for songs they didn't write
The performance is the art. In your analogy printer = PA system.

Who doesn't consider choir members to be artists?

jrace··on Police say they found mafia fugitive on YouTube, posting cooking tutorials
Are you saying that one is free to commit any crime as long as one day they stop and no longer commit crimes? And no punishment or retribution is required?

jrace··on YouTube suspends Donald Trump's channel
trump being kicked off Twitter et al is not because of his personal beliefs, sexual orientation, or race. He is being kicked of for inciting violence. Something that he agreed not to do when he signed up for the service.
jrace··on Some doctors, therapists get Health Canada permission to use magic mushrooms
No, not at all.

Many (non legal) mail or marijuana websites now offer dried mushrooms. Legit real psilocybin mushrooms, not synthetic.

jrace··on Charles Lindbergh is the reason the U.S. doesn't have cameras in the courtroom
I am interested in what would happen if we took this a step further.

Judgments by judge or jury to be done 'blind'. Neither to see the person on trial.

How many people are not given proper justice becuase of how they look?

No matter what you will not be able to remove bias, whether it is being overly harsh because of the persons skin color, or overly easy because the person is attractive.

https://www.thelawproject.com.au/insights/attractiveness-bia...

>>in one study, the effects of physical attractiveness on judges were so influential, they fined unattractive criminals 304.88% higher than attractive criminals.

jrace··on Charles Lindbergh is the reason the U.S. doesn't have cameras in the courtroom
I still wonder what the outcome would have been had it not been televised.
jrace··on Fighting for the right to repair your own stuff
The only danger is to the companies profit margin. Why buy new when you can just fix old?

I 100% agree with your comment.

jrace··on Fighting for the right to repair your own stuff
Most farm implements are dangerous even when under normal operating conditions. Farmers must be self reliant and able to repair there equipment or else the farm can fail. And a failed farm can take years to come back - if ever.

jrace··on UASP makes Raspberry Pi 4 disk IO 50% faster
One of the main reasons SD cards fail in a PI is shutting them down incorrectly. If you pull the power cord you risk corrupting the card. If the PI had a proper power switch system (also omitted due to cost) then you would see less SD cards being corrupted.

It is possible that even on-board flash memory could be corrupted by improper shutdown, and if that happened the entire pi would be useless, not just the SD card.

jrace··on Big Sur on Unsupported Macs
I had to reboot to do the update from 10.15.4 to 10.15.5

And cannot remember the last time any one of the 100+ windows 10 machines I administer had a forced reboot.

jrace··on Wireless Is a Trap
Depends where you live. Here in Canada almost all new builds have cat6 run to each room to a central closet.

Problem now is that most electricians think that because "it is just low voltage wiring" you do not need to worry about interference and can just run it anywhere.
