jpn··on The explosion in time series forecasting packages in data science
Also Peter Cotton has done some good work comparing these various packages.

He has a wrapper for all of these: https://github.com/microprediction/timemachines

And he compares their performances against each other: https://microprediction.github.io/timeseries-elo-ratings/htm...

Have you tried it yet?
jpn··on We are a step closer to taxing the super-rich
Because people are more careful spending their own money than other people's money.
jpn··on Ask HN: Are you still using your Vision Pro?
I use it regularly for work and watching sports.

Projecting my laptop screen several feet in front of me reduces eye strain.

Mac Virtual Display would be improved with support for dual screens. I’m also excited for Jump to release a Vision Pro app.

My next MacBook will be a 13" - I just don't need the 16" screen anymore.

jpn··on Airbnb's Devastating Effect on Canadian Housing
It's not bc of Airbnb. It's bc of rent control:

https://financialpost.com/real-estate/montreal-rent-cheaper-...

Rent control makes renting less attractive and Airbnb more attractive.

Allow higher rents will encourage more building and therefore more supply.

jpn··on Ask HN: What are some unpopular technologies you wish people knew more about?
Predictive Markets.
jpn··on Tax cuts for the wealthy only benefit the rich: debunking trickle-down economics
A minimal portion of the net worth of extremely wealthy individuals is spent on luxury items like yachts, bags, and cars. Most of their wealth is typically allocated towards savings or investments, which eventually leads to employment for many of the people in this forum.

> The handicap principle is a hypothesis proposed by the biologist Amotz Zahavi to explain how evolution may lead to "honest" or reliable signalling between animals which have an obvious motivation to bluff or deceive each other. It suggests that costly signals must be reliable signals, costing the signaller something that could not be afforded by an individual with less of a particular trait

jpn··on Why not tax private jets out of business?
Tax fuel instead if we care about the environment. Let the market decide how to prioritize.

jpn··on Ask HN: How to Invest $700k USD?
Still valid. Put it in the SP500.

If you have kids, you can put it in Utah's 529, and save on taxes when you need it for college.

Into the Breach
jpn··on Mito – Excel-like interface for Pandas dataframes in Jupyter notebook
I played around with many of these before:

- https://github.com/quantopian/qgrid

- https://github.com/man-group/dtale

I find that I'm actually a lot faster using basic Pandas methods to get the data I want in exactly the form I want it.

If I really want to show everything, I just use:

```
with pd.option_context('display.max_rows', None):
   print(df)
```

jpn··on Wealth Shown to Scale
Bezos's wealth comes out to be about $500 per person.

I would be more than happy to pay $500 to another Bezos that provides my life was as much value.

Amazon is so convenient!

jpn··on Ask HN: How to get back in employment market after working on side projects?
Stay humble and look at lower level positions that have room for growth.

Working in a larger organization requires a different skillset, but if you're good, you should rise quickly.

jpn··on Ask HN: What is your favorite daily-use object?
Outside of laptop & phone & earpods:

Fjall Raven KANKEN LAPTOP Backpack - Minimal laptop backpack that is comfortable and multifunctional

Apple iPhone Wallet - who needs cash anymore?

Hydroflask Bottle - which fits nicely in the backpack

jpn··on Ask HN: What websites do you visit every day?

jpn··on America's 1% Has Taken $50T From the Bottom 90%
Putting blame on a false reason is at worst a waste of time & resources and at best a distraction.
jpn··on America's 1% Has Taken $50T From the Bottom 90%
> Compound interest is the 8th wonder of the world. He who understands it, earns it; he who doesn't, pays it.

Albert Einstein

...supposedly:

https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/compound-interest/

But you get the point: exponential growth is the key to building wealth.

jpn··on America's 1% Has Taken $50T From the Bottom 90%
Also the disparity of wealth can be simply explained by investments (or lack of).

If you invest in the stock market, your wealth grows exponentially.

If you don't invest in the stock market, your wealth grows linearly.

Exponential growth >> linear growth
