jpitz··on Removing juries: 'A move towards an authoritarian state'
I don't think the boring reality of most jury trials would make for an interesting screenplay.
jpitz··on Ivy League psychologist: 'Bring your whole self to work' is bad advice
To every commenter offering incredulity or sarcasm at the apparent obviousness of this advice:

A great swath of us did not possess the social intelligence to arrive at this conclusion independently upon our arrival in the workforce. I didn't. I got lucky.

jpitz··on The first interstellar software update: The hack that saved Voyager 1 [video]
In my experience, pretty much anything relating to spaceflight is gonna be lumped under ITAR and restricted from general disclosure.
jpitz··on Are hard drives getting better?
The question is, do we have enough capacity to mine and refine them at a reasonable price? They're there, in the dirt for the taking.
jpitz··on Software update bricks some Jeep 4xe hybrids over the weekend
I owned a Jeep 4XE, and I was glad the day we sold it, and I'm doubly glad today. The electronics and software were crap, and the powertrain was simply insufficient. At one point, they issued a notice that amounted to 'it might catch on fire, keep it away from your house.'
jpitz··on Dgsh – Directed graph shell
Ok. thank you!
jpitz··on Dgsh – Directed graph shell
Do you mean to say that two non-dependant tasks in an Airflow DAG aren't able to concurrently execute? Thats not my experience. I'm also confused by the use of 'static' in this context.
jpitz··on Show HN: Envoy – Command Logger
Then you should look at https://atuin.sh/ although I am not certain about exit code.
jpitz··on Good system design
>You have two options: fail open and let the request through, or fail closed and block the request with a 429.

If the metaphor of a software circuit breaker is meant to emulate an electrical circuit breaker, then it seems to me that these two are inverted. Whenever a physical circuit breaker is open, it is not dangerous and not passing current.

jpitz··on Ask HN: What are your current programming pet peeves?
Like https://xon.sh/ ?
jpitz··on Mill: A better build tool for Java, Scala, and Kotlin
Which works fine.....until it doesn't. Many non-trivial builds require custom logic, and trying to do that in maven was painful the last time I tried it.
jpitz··on The Missing Manual for Signals: State Management for Python Developers
Are you talking about Airflow Datasets and data-aware scheduling?

https://airflow.apache.org/docs/apache-airflow/2.4.0/release...

Isn't that about as recently as Dagster?

jpitz··on You can't git clone a team
That response says more to me about the hiring organization, and not in a good light.
jpitz··on Turing-Drawings
Possible Snow Crash warning too, I guess?
jpitz··on Living in your programming environment [pdf]
Good ole M-x butterfly
jpitz··on Clean Code vs. A Philosophy Of Software Design
"Do One Thing" is to me maybe best understood in the context of the Single Layer Of Abstraction Principal - it has helped me numerous times to be very intentional about following SLAP in complex code, and Do One Thing seems to fall very naturally out of it.
jpitz··on PgAssistant: OSS tool to help devs understand and optimize PG performance
Greg Smith wrote a book about postgres high performance that does go into the internals a bit and how to analyze performance problems. If you want to be a DBA, this will probably wind up needing to be in your back pocket at some point.
jpitz··on Ask HN: What do you look for in a work monitor?
5120x1440p if it's the same monitor i have.
jpitz··on How Do You Like What You've Built?
My take from it was that the question prompted the change author to introspect his feelings about the change and revisit it, making it better.
jpitz··on Types are a basic tool of software design (2018)
Could it be Linus Torvalds' "Bad programmers worry about the code. Good programmers worry about data structures and their relationships." ?
jpitz··on Ask HN: What's the most creative 'useless' program you've ever written?
Useless is in the eye of the beholder I guess. I wrote a slowcat filter one time to help test something. It's like cat, but with random latency between lines / bytes.
jpitz··on Energy Storage is a solved problem
Alternately:

Large scale storage is reasonably well solved.

jpitz··on Magnet-free induction motor aims to nearly halve carbon emissions
I think it is telling that they don't mention any efficiency numbers. Hopefully I'm wrong.
jpitz··on On the Nature of Time
Almost like time is the stack and space is the heap.

Meh. Almost.

jpitz··on Tinystatus: A tiny status page generated by a Python script
Something I do in my yaml configs is support ${ENV} template variables with the string Template's substitute method using *os.environ.
jpitz··on Ask HN: Should we bring software dev in-house?
You may want to hire someone to really dive into this question.

That allows you to set up a NDA that allows you to go into the nitty gritty details of your niche and why this product is out of headroom.

A fresh technical perspective may also provide insight into a path forward that doesnt include rip-and-replace.

jpitz··on All I want for Christmas is a negative leap second
You claimed that timezones change an hour by area. That's not the case. That's my point.
jpitz··on All I want for Christmas is a negative leap second
You might be surprised to learn that there are time zones that are not an integer number of hours different from UTC.
jpitz··on iTerm 3.5.1 removes automatic OpenAI integration, requires opt-in
The headline implies that "requires opt-in" is new to 3.5.1. that's not the case. The OpenAI integration always required opt in and an API token to function.

Can we fix the headline?

jpitz··on POV-Ray – The Persistence of Vision Raytracer (2021)
I spent a lot of time with POV-Ray. Back in ~1992 I had the IBM C++ Compiler for OS/2 and spent a day or so tweaking the source to get it to compile. Fun times.
