"Try it, you'll see" is snake oil sales 101.

Are you skeptical that my fig leaf root seed product results in a higher sex drive and whiter teeth? Don't just accept this... try it!

jpcx01··on Important Safety Notice from WakeMate
Not like they really had a choice here. It's spreading like wild on twitter already. If they ignored it, it would have been a huge problem for them.

At least they aren't crazy and are doing the right thing. I'm guessing someone really regrets trying to save a few pennies on the charger.

It's a tough business no doubt. I think they'll make it through just fine though.

jpcx01··on Heroku for...
Yep, these are handled via the provisioning apis. When the addon is installed, the service gets a simple provision api request with the customer details. When the addon is uninstalled, there's a deprovision api request.

Heroku Addons are super well documented and easy to develop and deploy. One of the best parts of the platform.

jpcx01··on Heroku for...
I was just trying to be nice. But then realized I'd rather be honest than nice.
jpcx01··on Ask HN: I built a site that just went ridiculously viral. What do I do now?
Nah. MVP should be done in the technology you are most proficient at, regardless of how fast/slow it runs. Optimize after you've proven your idea.

I think he just should have hosted on Heroku as he could have scaled it a bit faster.

jpcx01··on Heroku for...
I like it! I'll keep that on my radar.
jpcx01··on Heroku for...
Cloud is a good product. But it basically just resell AMZN ec2 instances and doesn't provide the simplicity of Heroku. I switched from EY to Opscode's Platform and it's both much cheaper and much more powerful.

edit: ok, I love engineyard and the people there. I'm really sorry to say that EY cloud is not actually a good product. I despise it. Probably the worst tool I've ever used to deploy rails.

jpcx01··on Heroku for...
I totally agree. straightforward != easy. That's why I'm not chomping at the bits to do it myself :-). But the opportunity and potential is there, there should be some investors and star developers who should take it.
jpcx01··on Heroku for...
Every one of those addons is available directly from the vendor. The addons just set some ENV variables, or auto installs a plugin on deploy. Plus the provisioning apis are well documented so you could easily replicate it on a competing service so existing addon's would work with no additional dev effort needed by the addon provider (I've deployed a heroku addon).

Yep, good point on the free apps. I don't think a competitor would have to offer free apps though if they were able to lower the cost for paid installs and use the exact same deployment tools.

jpcx01··on Heroku for...
How about another Heroku for Ruby? Could use some competition I think, and the market is already proven.

Seems like it should be straightforward replicate the functionality for a lower price and get a good percentage of the Heroku user base. Nothing really ties people to the platform. And the addon's should work with pretty much any EC2 based platform as a service.

Awesome. Now I can stop checking http://wastm2released.com/ every hour. Woohoo... thanks!
jpcx01··on DD-WRT, I Know Where You Live
Some background here would be really nice (for us non device hackers). Who exactly would have DD-WRT on their routers? Is it something you have to install manually?

edit: i should have googled before asking :-). Apparently it's a custom firmware for linksys routers. Looks like you have to go through a lot of trouble to get it installed, so I'm sure the overall userbase is pretty small.

jpcx01··on My Startup - A node.js cloud hosting platform
EngineYard was doing uber expensive fully managed rails hosting at the time Heroku go started. Wasn't till over a year after Heroku launched that EY launched their alternative (Solo->Cloud->??). Pretty good tools, but fairly different than Heroku. They focus on managing EC2 instances instead of Heroku's "Dynos" (small abstracted chunks of easily scalable server resources).

To me EY seems like a much better version of Linode + install scripts that are targeted to Ruby users. Heroku seems to me more like Google's AppEngine, except much more expensive and without the autoscaling.

jpcx01··on My Startup - A node.js cloud hosting platform
Doesn't it seem a bit "me too"ish? Seems like a super crowded market with extremely capable competitors. Heroku was able to sneak in since they were the first company to offer a service like this for rails. With Joyent's amazing no.de platform, I can't imagine any business deciding to base their infrastructure on a tool that a couple developers just started and doesn't yet have stable funding or a proven business.

Just my 2 cents. The landing page looks great. Hope they can pull through.

I'm currently using Zerigo. They've been awesome so probably wont switch anytime soon. Tough competition going up against AMZN for this though.

Informants save lives. Many terrorist plots that have been stopped since 9/11 were due to some insider alerting authorities. If people think they're identity is not safe with the government, they will not come forward and we will see people die as terrorist plots succeed.
jpcx01··on [dead]
Boycott wikileaks. Posting classified government documents is going too far. Im all for whistleblowing, but you can't expect to share private government documents that potentially put Americans in danger and expect no consequences.
jpcx01··on [dead]
I agree we need more WikiLeaks for the Federal Reserve. Where wikileaks screwed up was getting into the business of national security stuff. Leaking diplomatic and military secrets is going to get you in a world of trouble, and Assange deserves all the pain he's going to get for deciding to publish information that would jeopardize people's physical safety.

Hopefully a new wikileaks will pop up though, maybe one with some sanity.

jpcx01··on Wikileaks kicked out of Amazon's cloud
Makes sense to me. Wikileaks is violating laws by posting other people's private and classified information. Amazon has no business aiding them in criminal activities. Free speech != exposing classified documents.

Free speech is about original content. You can say / publish whatever you want online. But you can't take other people's content and post it, especially when it could endanger lives.

jpcx01··on Create Your Own Recipes: Brilliant UI for a viral cooking website
The fact that its so heavily dependent on Flash sort of kills it for me. But maybe i'm just weird.

It's a cool idea and nice implementation

jpcx01··on Ruby is beautiful (but I'm moving to Python)
Using Ruby extensively with CoffeeScript is also making me long for significant whitespace. I think CoffeeScript gets it perfect. Unfortunately, it's just a wrapper around JS so it has limited uses (until Node.js gets mature).

jpcx01··on Implementing a Social Graph using Redis
In practical terms, under scale, it's pretty much the case. If you don't have enough memory to have your entire dataset in memory, the performance degrades to a point where it'll be too slow to do anything, so it might as well not work at all.

Similar problems with MongoDB. Anytime your indexed data starts hitting disk, kiss your site goodbye.

Sharding seems like the proper workaround though, so maybe you could take the same approach of flockdb and shard the redis social graph.

jpcx01··on Ask HN: LESS vs SCSS/SASS
Compass CSS is the killer feature of SASS I think.
jpcx01··on Please review my startup: Open, Democratic, Project Mgmt
Yeah, after watching the video, I was wondering if this was just a rebranding of Pivotal Tracker.

If you're going to steal an interface... please don't steal from such an ugly and disfunctional web app. Having to use Pivotal Tracker for 3 months on a client project made me batshit crazy. It's one of the worst user interfaces I've ever suffered long term.
