jpb0104··on The Twelve-Factor App (2025)
I've got to give credit where it is due... It really feels like Laravel Cloud picked up where Heroku left off. Or at least is trying to.
jpb0104··on What job interviews taught me about Kubernetes
Kamal is somewhere in the middle. Probably a little closer to a bunch of bash scripts. But it’ll get your container going pretty quick. Can take a bit of fiddling with SSH/docker-login. Plus it handles deployments very well.
jpb0104··on Retro-Tech Parenting
We built https://www.beanstalk.club/ just for this!!! Our kids organize play dates on their own now. They can collaborate on video games with their friends.
jpb0104··on Private equity bought America's essential services
Agree. I think that's what "Owner Operated" used to mean. Would be interesting to have a certification for these businesses. I've also started collecting related links:

jpb0104··on Red Squares – GitHub outages as contributions
Setup my self-hosted Forgejo last night. Very pleased so far.
jpb0104··on Belgium stops decommissioning nuclear power plants
I love that you mention 'extreme care'. I was enthralled with this look inside a plant and the operations involved. Truly a sight to behold. And extreme care is not an overstatement.

jpb0104··on Tin Can, a 'landline' for kids
Seems like there are a bunch of alternatives popping up including some DIY solutions. Which is really awesome in this space. Check out https://www.beanstalk.club/ I've done some work with these folks. I love their bring-your-own-phone approach. There are so many cool old-school phones out there, even on ebay. We've also seen lots of success with Beanstalk and a simple $20 cordless phone. Kids love wandering around chit-chatting. There's also a ton of momentum around the https://www.waituntil8th.org/ pledge.

jpb0104··on Fast
Agree. One of my favorite tropes to product and leadership is that “performance is a feature”.
jpb0104··on Show HN: SnapQL – Desktop app to query Postgres with AI
I like this a lot. I am looking forward to having something similar built into Metabase.
jpb0104··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (March 2025)
I'm working on a small project to bring plain-old-telephones back into our children's lives. Quick, screen-less connections with grandparents, cousins, and friends is as quick as picking up the phone and pressing one button. Imagine that.

In a similar vein. I have been following a creator doing some very cool things with 3d printed rc construction equipment.

jpb0104··on Ask HN: Spending Tracking Tools
I've been tracking my expenses meticulously and manually for over 10 years now with https://budgetmyway.com/. I've built this to scratch my own itch, and built an expense tracker that meets "my" needs. I have a handful of happy users. This is more of a passion project and not a solo-startup or anything like that. I'd love to hear your feedback and see if it meets your needs. There are not any external data connections via Plaid, no 3rd party data tracking or sharing, your data is your data.

I know manual expense tracking might sound like a bear, but I find it cathartic and reflective to have to enter expenses.

jpb0104··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (October 2024)
I've been hacking on a super simple on-call rotation manager. Been fun to learn Hotwire/Stimulus. https://majorpager.com
jpb0104··on Show HN: I built an open-source tool to make on-call suck less
I love this space; stability & response! After my last full-time gig, I was also frustrated with the available tooling and ONLY wanted an on-call scheduling tool with simple calendar integration. So I built: https://majorpager.com/ Not OSS, but very simple and hopefully pretty straightforward to use. I'm certainly wide open to feedback.
jpb0104··on Ask HN: What non-AI products are you working on?
Thank you ^... to parent comment... Apologies. I will likely change that. Probably too tongue-in-cheek.
jpb0104··on Ask HN: What non-AI products are you working on?
https://majorpager.com - Very simple on-call rotation scheduling for small teams!!! I even toyed with the idea of putting a `#noai` hashtag on the homepage.
jpb0104··on RoR Debugbar

Always miss this in my RoR projects.

jpb0104··on Firefly III: A free and open source personal finance manager
As with most devs, I also saw personal budgeting as a nail and I had a hammer. Here's my somewhat opinionated take on personal expense tracking and budgeting. I'm wide open to feedback: https://budgetmyway.com

jpb0104··on Almost every infrastructure decision I endorse or regret
I just started building out on-call rotation scheduling to fit teams that already have an alerting solution and need simple automated scheduling. I’d love to get some feedback: https://majorpager.com
