jpalomaki··on MacBook Air M4
One benefit is that computer stays connected even if you go somewhere else with your phone.

It's one of those small things that makes like a bit easier. On Lenovo/HP these have been around for years and they don't cost that much.

jpalomaki··on You probably don't need query builders
Also once you start pasting the SQL together from multiple pieces, risks of SQL injection rise.
jpalomaki··on Lenovo has removed the TrackPoint nub from new ThinkPad laptops
It was more important when the trackpads were small and not so good. For example drag and drop was difficult with small trackpad as you had to move your fingers more often when you hit the sides of pad.
jpalomaki··on Dumping Memory to Bypass BitLocker on Windows 11
You can make things a bit harder by locking the boot order in bios and password protecting the bios settings.

Not sure how much this helps against a determined attacker, but it's easy and inconvenience is minimal in most cases.

jpalomaki··on Lossless Log Aggregation - Reduce Log Volume by 99% Without Dropping Data
Side benefit is that you don't need to parse the arbitrary strings to extract information from the logs.
jpalomaki··on Hetzner cuts traffic on US VPSs, raises prices
Am I calculating right that 20TB per month means around ~60Mbits per second for 24/7? Not a network expert, but it is hard to see how this could be sustainable for less than €5/month.

Sounds a bit like the usual case where company is able to give a generous offering because most customers utilize just a small portion of it. Maybe with the attention they have been getting, they have attracted more bandwidth hungry customers.

jpalomaki··on I Didn't Need Kubernetes, and You Probably Don't Either
Is it this one, Kubernetes: Up and Running, 3rd Edition by Brendan Burns, Joe Beda, Kelsey Hightower, Lachlan Evenson from 2022? https://www.oreilly.com/library/view/kubernetes-up-and/97810...

(edit: found the 3rd edition)

jpalomaki··on Using uv with PyTorch
I've been using a combination of pyenv, venv and Poetry in the past.

Now I have switched to uv with new projects. No problems so far. I definitely recommend giving it a go.

jpalomaki··on Even Microsoft Notepad is getting AI text editing now
I have always thought the decision to keep Notepad and Paint as they are is a nod towards the developer community. Thanks to this, there's a large market for affordable and better alternatives.
jpalomaki··on The almost-lost art of rosin potatoes
How about wrapping the potato on something that seals it before heating it up?

Some recipies instruct you to wrap the potatoes with aluminium foil. I’ve always thought this is useless, but maybe should give it a try.

jpalomaki··on Qualcomm cancels Snapdragon Dev Kit, refunds all orders
I was excited during the summer, but now Intel's Lunar Lake is ruining the show. Seems to be Intel is able to match (or offer better) battery life and performance. If this the case, I don't see much point in picking Arm for Windows.

And unlike with Apple, on Windows the x86 won't go away. So there's two architectures that need to be supported. And I'm not so sure everybody is interested to put the effort for Arm.

jpalomaki··on Ward Christensen (of BBS and XMODEM fame) has died
And then https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMODEM

SModem supported simultaneous upload/download and chatting.

jpalomaki··on WiFi4EU initiative provides free Wi-Fi in public spaces across Europe
Technically this is the case, but due to operator pricing wifi is is still good option. 5G comes with the roaming charges (not so much problem within EU, although there are data caps) and at least local operators here in Finland don't really have good 5G packages for people with multiple devices.
jpalomaki··on iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max
They got USB-C
jpalomaki··on The "email is authentication" pattern
Phone companied have customer support. This is a weak point, because attacker can use social engineering to gain access to your number.
jpalomaki··on The "email is authentication" pattern
Yes. I would very much like to tie certain accounts to my government issued digital identity and allow that as the only recovery method.
jpalomaki··on Midjourney web experience is now open to everyone
Maybe they got so far thanks to the Discord approach.

When you went to the Discord, you immediately got the endless stream of great looking stuff other people were generating. This was quite powerful way to show what is possible.

I bet one challenge for getting new users engaged with these tools is that you try to generate something, get bad results, get disappointed and never come back.

jpalomaki··on Google is the only search engine that works on Reddit now, thanks to AI deal
Quite sure they are also enforcing these with some technical measures to limit scraping.
jpalomaki··on Gitlab Explores Sale
>How can anyone compete against a trillion dollar company that's fine with subsidizing an unprofitable business line?

It sounds like impossible, but it's not always. Sometimes large companies loose the focus and become slow. There can be multiple competing products and teams are prevented from building the best product in order to not interfere more profitable business. Microsoft for example has both GitHub and Azure DevOps.

One example of how the infinite resources do not always help. Year ago GitHub decided not proceed with adding support for Python packages in GitHub packages. "This is no longer planned due to a change in our strategic priorities and the allocation of our resources towards higher-priority initiatives." [1]

jpalomaki··on Building and scaling Notion's data lake
From the article: "Unlock AI, Search, and other product use cases that require denormalized data"
jpalomaki··on Ente Auth: open-source Authy alternative for 2FA
The main problem with secure device based 2FA is how to handle the case when device gets lost and you don't have backups (many people don't really think this kind of stuff beforehand). How can a person re-establish their identity? For services like Google, Facebook etc. the answer might be "you don't", but it is more difficult for companies where the end user is also the customer.

And I think the best answer is government issued digital identity and being able to use that to recover your access to the online services (of course up to you if you wish to make this connection).

jpalomaki··on I Received an AI Email
I no longer bother to answer anything to cold emails or LinkedIn messages. Despate the personal tone, they seem to mostly driven by marketing automation tools.

Maybe in future I will have my ”AI secretary” to answer those and have a discussion with the ”AI sales assistant”.

jpalomaki··on Booting Linux off of Google Drive
Booting over HTTP would be interesting for device like Raspberry. Then you could run without memory card and have less things to break.
jpalomaki··on Show HN: Drop-in SQS replacement based on SQLite
Unless you need the features, I would steer away from the "real message queues". Running these adds complexity, especially if you want higher availability and they are not always cheap.

HTTP based solution is easy to understand and implemented (if basic functionality is enough for your use case). Real MQs obviously have more complex protocols and not all client libraries are perfect.

jpalomaki··on Canonical's 'distroless' Linux images are a game-changer for enterprises
It's about security and reducing the probability of getting CVEs for your running containers. Less software you bundle there, less security issues you will have. And this in turn means less work on maintenance as you don't need to update, test and deploy new versions of images so often.
jpalomaki··on Canonical's 'distroless' Linux images are a game-changer for enterprises
I guess the key thing is that they promise the security fixes for 12 years.

This is interesting, because in large org you ofren have lot of stuff you just want to keep on running with minimal changes.

jpalomaki··on Microsoft breached antitrust rules by bundling Teams and Office, EU says
Teams was the first tool from Microsoft on this space that was "good enough". The tools you mentioned were mostly for calls and instant messaging, not so strong on collaboration. With Teams Microsoft is really building a collaboration platform. They would like work to take place inside the Teams app.
jpalomaki··on POV-Ray – The Persistence of Vision Raytracer (2021)
We wrote some small tools with Turbo Pascal to generate number of scene files, then rendered these to create small animations. Having a camera move over a reflective chessboard was pretty amazing.
jpalomaki··on All of Microsoft's MacBook Air-beating benchmarks
Is Surface Laptop using active cooling? It is pretty well known that MacBook Air sustained performance is limited due to thermals.

People have been doing mods which transfer the heat to the frame. This gives big performance boost at the expense of hot computer on your lap.

jpalomaki··on Google Meet rolls out multi-device adaptive audio merging
Might be also related to the delay in communications. There's the time the packets traverse the networks, but also delays due to buffering to accommodate poor connections.
