jpalawaga··on How to speed up US passenger rail, without bullet trains
plus an hour on the train, or a hundred bucks in a taxi on the new york side, and likewise on the chicago side, plus security screening. and luggage is free too, I think?

so mostly just faster.

that your name is tokio yoyo is sort of funny to me because if you look at shinkansen build/planning timelines, it is absolutely on the order of 2050 for extensions.

the japanese have a world-class trainsystem and it's built by putting one foot in front of the other for decades, not expecting it to be built overnight.

of course, you can build it faster, but then it is more expensive. so what's the priority? it's easier to fund high speed rail projects in developed nations by long, sustained investment that is easily planned for rather than having to suddenly come up with billions of dollars and then deal with the political fallout of inevitable cost-overruns associated with rushing things.

I have no idea why you're getting downvoted. A lot of highly-paid software developers are complaining that nintendo doesn't cheapen their offerings by discounting them to $5 a game like steam sales. why not cheapen your product's offering as it continues down the x-axis of time?

I've always respected Nintendo for this. They know they're offering a quality product, and the price will be the same if you buy now or in a year, so buy it if you want it.

It also means if you want to resell your game, you'll get a fair price for it.

Despite all of the negative/critical takes, I think the switch 2 looks great. The hardware improvements look nice. The top usb-port is a great addition with the kickstand, so you can actually charge while you play (this was a bust with switch 1).

I think the camera is also good. I actually really look forward to playing mario games with my nieces. And for those who don't want it, it's no extra cost.

120fps and 1080p w/ upscaling to 4k look good but ambitious. I wonder how much AI is used. The fans inside the dock are a clever way to maintain performance.

Also, I have a lot of friends who casually stream games in discord, so the chat/sharing functionality seems aptly timed.

So you're not denying climate change, just the effects of it. I'm not sure that's any better.

We call it climate change because warmer weather produces higher variance in weather patterns--you're adding entropy into the system. Overall warmer, but more rain (and mud/rockslides), more wind, more lightning, etc etc.

jpalawaga··on The Alexa feature "do not send voice recordings" you enabled no longer available
Do those same people also care about quality of education, availability and utility of public transit, etc? Or is the size of your home the only factor in what makes somewhere livable?
jpalawaga··on Is our universe trapped inside a black hole? This JWS Telescope discovery
An entire universe crammed inside the event horizon seems pretty dense to me! Makes you wonder how much matter would be in the parent universe.
jpalawaga··on Windows 11 Insider Preview Build
The new file sharing menu looks great. Honestly it looks like something I'd expect to see in macOS.
jpalawaga··on Windows 11 Insider Preview Build
It's not? The iPhone App library has a TERRIBLE UX with its mandatory (and confusing) grouping. The Windows 11 Start Menu grid is fine just the way it is, but I guess now there is a category mode for people who like to hide their apps.

It's closer to Android which has no grouping. Besides, Apple only did the library once they realized Android's approach of customizable home screens + library was superior to forcing every app to be on your home screens.

Both of which ripped off the Desktop, which goes back to what, the Xerox computing days?

jpalawaga··on uBlock Origin Forcefully Removed by Chrome
I've been using Firefox for the last 4+ years and it's been mostly fine. I have Chrome for the very occasional site that doesn't behave right, but they're few and far between (like maybe once a year).

I think the first statement is reporting on market cap and the second statement is reporting on revenue.

If you look at UMG's revenue, one of the largest labels, their revenue was 11B.

jpalawaga··on Google Pixel 4a's old firmware is gone, trapping users on buggy battery update
They basically did the same thing, which is why there was a lawsuit. It's also why Google preemitively offered users free money--it was informed by the lawsuit against Apple for the same shit.
jpalawaga··on Copyright Office suggests AI copyright debate was settled in 1965
Copyright law stipulates the conditions in which content can be reproduced, not conditions in which it can be consumed.

Arguably the material has been learned and not copied. Maybe in some cases learned with an uncanny ability or photographic memory, but learned. (People with photographic memories also cannot reproduce content in an unlimited fashion).

jpalawaga··on Discussion: Reduce error handling boilerplate in Golang using '?'
It's worth noting that 'taking a proposal seriously' doesn't equate to accepting it.
jpalawaga··on How far can you get in 40 minutes from each subway station in NYC?
Something here is not quite right. For example, if you look at the 7th ave line (red line/1,2,3) 18th street and 14th street have similar radii.

But anyone knows that 14th street is much more convenient because it's triply serviced by the 1,2,3 with 2,3 being express trains. 18th street is serviced by one train the runs locally. This ignores that you could easily switch to the L, A/C/E, F/M with a short walk.

Still, a cool visualization to show the power of mass transit, and even compare relatively between lines.

jpalawaga··on How far can you get in 40 minutes from each subway station in NYC?
It does. New York's system is one of only a handful in the world that operates all (or nearly all) lines 24/7.

jpalawaga··on Is the world becoming uninsurable?
You do realize health insurers have federally mandated caps on their profits, which simply incentivizes creative accounting to make money in more oblique ways, right?
jpalawaga··on Is the world becoming uninsurable?
They're exiting the market because the states have limits on how premiums can increase y/y. The risk modeling (which is turning out to be right) says premiums are fractional of what they should be. So unable to raise premiums, the companies just leave.

Rock, meet hard place.

jpalawaga··on Is the world becoming uninsurable?
California's building codes are the same. Three problems: overhaul takes generations, monster fire storms will still burn resistant materials, and brush upkeep is difficult
jpalawaga··on Nintendo announces the Switch 2 [video]
GC emulation wasn't emulation; it was done with a separate chip. It was more like native support. Eventually Nintendo removed that chip and backward-compatibility support from the console.

(so, even if you could put a GC disk in, it didn't have capability to natively play the game)

People don't want to be taken care of if they're sick or injured? They'd rather be backfired or dead because of an accident? Unless if they participate in the American employment cabal?

Please. People want to be taken care of. America was built by people escaping famine and people escaping poor living/working conditions.

In other words, it was built by people trying to make a better living for themselves. Living or dying by your success or failure wasn't a desirable feature, it was an incidental side effect of colonizing a new land.

jpalawaga··on A decade and a half of instability: The history of Google messaging apps (2021)
The reality is Google's peak messaging days were 2016-2019. When you could send/receive text messages from your Gmail inbox alongside Google's native chat platform. Also, all of your chats were backed up and searchable by Gmail (which was actually good at the time).

Having RCS is nice, but I always said the deep integration of SMS into gmails platform was a big competitive advantage and was something that kept me firmly in the ecosystem for years.

jpalawaga··on Show HN: I built a tool to rank cities based on purchasing power for SWEs
There’s something very funny to me about SFs weather score being as high as it is. While I’d say it is certainly mild, I’d stop short of declaring it definitively better.

Maybe it’s the northerner in me who actually prefers seasons and doesn’t mind a bit of snow.

jpalawaga··on Ask HN: Can we (or at least Valve) stop using SMS for identity?
The problem is “just remember!” is not exactly foolproof. I have steam email set up for 2fa, they gave the account away regardless.

Actually, I don’t think I ever attached my phone number for recovery purposes, I suspect I added it as a step to play CS or DotA.

And then they parlayed it into an account recovery option.

jpalawaga··on How bloom filters made SQLite 10x faster
SQLite is self-described as not open contribution. So yes by their own measure they've made it more difficult to mainline features (and intentionally so).
jpalawaga··on Is stuff online worth saving?
sure, you can always move the old storage mechanism to something new if it is too cumbersome.

why still back up floppies if you could just move the data to a single dvd, or throw is on the SAN?

RAID is just algorithms, the actual transport doesn't matter (i.e. spinning platter and solid state both use SATA connectors).
