jounker··on In Defense of Electricity Markets
There are very few grid failures under regulated systems too. Also, was said, the grid itself is a heavily regulated service.
jounker··on Why don’t Americans eat mutton?
I beg to differ. Difficulty depends upon the recipe.

Lamb/mutton tagines are incredibly easy to make. They’re basically “throw it into a slow cooker and come back eight hours later” dishes. You can improve the flavor by browning, but the simplest versions are still wonderfully delicious and basically idiot proof.

jounker··on On being ready to die, and yet also now being able to swallow ice cream
You’ve been digging yourself a deeper hole rather than climbing out. I hope you start climbing soon.
jounker··on Amsterdam to use “noise cameras” against too loud cars
It’s a great theory, but it has a problem. There are quiet motorcycles. For example, BMW motorcycles are quiet.

[BMW made a cruiser bike for a few years. They were trying to move into Harley’s market segment. In order to get the “right” sound they had to detune the engine, resulting in a massive decrease in horsepower.]

jounker··on The World is Built on Probability (1984)
What i remember from my PDE class was a lecture which involved solving the wave equation for a particular bounded case and, with a slight transformation, the professor showing that the normal distribution was embedded in that solution.
jounker··on Ocean-surface temperatures are breaking records
Global warming is a direct result of technological change.
jounker··on Dr. Mengele, USA Style: Lessons from Human Rights Abuses in America [pdf] (2022)
From looking around at the opposition to chemical industry regulations, it seems that knowingly poisoning people still isn’t considered wrong.

Incidents eventually resulted in the creation of Institutional Review Boards. All research on human subjects must now pass an IRB, and these are not rubber stamp organizations.
jounker··on Police sue rapper Afroman for using footage of home raid in his music videos
I’m an American. I lived in Switzerland. There is no glorification of the military. It’s a job that people have to do. It’s less, “I proudly serve my country,” and much more, “Aw crap. It’s time for my annual marksmanship certification.”
jounker··on Show HN: Yaksha Programming Language
It’s super easy to parse until you have interesting higher order functions.
jounker··on A spellchecker used to be a major feat of software engineering (2008)
It’s amazing how hard the majority of poor people work. If effort was all that counted then the slums of the world would be overflowing with billionaires.
jounker··on I don’t want a new phone, but I’m probably buying one
Garbage collected applications require 2x-4x more memory to run efficiently. Android apps use GC. IOS apps do not use GC. Therefore apple can ship devices with less memory to get the same effective functionality. Less memory means smaller batteries or longer battery life. It’s a good trade off that gives apple more flexibility in terms of hardware platforms.

And who is going to make that comprehensive information available?

jounker··on Antidepressants help bacteria resist antibiotics: study
Non human animals. Farmers feed massive amounts of antibiotics to their livestock. This used to increase their weight, but it’s no longer clear that this works.
jounker··on Tailscale bug allowed a person to share nodes from other tailnets without auth
And then there is the realists take with running your own: OH F*K. Another bug I have to deal with.
jounker··on Stable Diffusion Frivolous Litigation
If it generates an artists signature when producing something in that artists style, then I’d argue against that idea. And frequently enough, they will generate a recognizable signature.
jounker··on Ask HN: Do you hate software engineering but love programming?
If I could upvote this a thousand times, then I would. Bad management makes any development methodology suck.

jounker··on Barilla passive cooker
Hi end gas ranges will beat a good electric kettle in the USA. (kettle 7min, range <6 min). My wife picked up a used thermidor this last summer and it beats any kettle we’ve had in the USA so far by at least a minute. That said, the kettle is more convenient overall (auto shutoff, auto start, pour from same container), so we end up using it.

In the other hand the US kettle beat the crap out of our old gas range, and even the good range is not nearly as fast as a crappy electric kettle in germany, which clocks in at 4 min.

jounker··on Separate Your Billing from Entitlements
This article contains really good advice.
jounker··on Ask HN: WFH – will I be outsourced?
My current experience with hiring for remote positions says otherwise.
jounker··on Ask HN: Have we screwed ourselves as software engineers?
I think the metaphor is more apt than you’re giving it credit for. You just don’t have enough experience with the trade offs involved with “the best tphysical ool for the job”. :)
jounker··on The unreasonable fight for municipal broadband
Sonic is pretty good. https://www.sonic.com/

jounker··on Heresy
Yup. Paul Graham doesn’t seem to have a very accurate memory of historical conditions.
jounker··on Heresy
> Up till about 1985 the window [of what you can say without being cancelled] had been growing ever wider. Anyone looking into the future in 1985 would have expected freedom of expression to continue to increase. Instead it has decreased.

In 1985 in most places in the USA a public school teacher openly supporting gay rights in the classroom would have been risking their job and possibly their entire career.

jounker··on Reinstating our SAT/ACT requirement for future admissions cycles
I know at least one of these people. When you give her an opportunity she hits the ball out of the park. Wherever you put her she quickly rises to the top, but she has been denied many opportunities because she doesn’t test well on standardized tests.
