joshypants··on Microsoft’s quest to go ‘carbon negative’ inspires $1B fund
The also just secured a $10 Billion contract with the US military, which is one of the largest emitters of carbon on the planet.

Americans have been reticent to downsize the military for the benefit of everyone else on the planet, but we might just get around to it for our own benefit in reducing emissions.

joshypants··on Apocalyptic Claims About Climate Change Are Wrong
Three things are true:

* We cannot let despair prevent us from acting. The big changes needed are possible, and we need to accelerate them.

* We actually don't know with certainty how bad it is going to get.

* People, in general, are not scared enough right now.

joshypants··on Two of America's biggest coal plants closed this month
The satire is a little imprecise here, but this is literally why there's a Green New Deal being proposed. We can address climate change AND make sure everyone has a livelihood while society undergoes the massive changes necessary.
joshypants··on Hacker Publishes 2TB of Data from Cayman National Bank
The future of the species is literally imperiled right now because we've allowed rich people to hoard wealth, so that's a reason to care.
joshypants··on Nuclear energy is a vital part of solving the climate crisis
What you're missing is nuclear is too slow to spin up! We simply don't have time. We need to cut emissions 50% in 10 years, and nuclear is not going to get us there. Look to other renewables.
joshypants··on Show HN: Collective.Energy – Crowdsource climate solutions as a community
you're going to let a bunch of astroturfing people wreck your platform and it's not going to be useful to anyone. you're being naive.
joshypants··on Show HN: Collective.Energy – Crowdsource climate solutions as a community
We have 10 years to cut 50% of emissions. We literally can't build enough nuclear plants in that time, it's very slow. It's also really expensive. We have to use other renewables.
joshypants··on Show HN: Collective.Energy – Crowdsource climate solutions as a community
Wow, this doesn't instill confidence in your moderation abilities. You need to show people who "disagree on the causes" the door.
joshypants··on Show HN: Collective.Energy – Crowdsource climate solutions as a community
Because nuclear takes too long to spin up - we don't have time.
joshypants··on Ask HN: Is web dev viable today?
React is the current biggest front end framework, with Vue growing.
joshypants··on Ask HN: Is web dev viable today?
Needs to be qualified with what location you're in
joshypants··on Googlers Are Protesting Company’s Deals with Big Oil
It's really not about broadcasting their opinions to you, it's about getting the company to make changes that help mitigate climate change, which threatens the safety of everyone on planet earth?
joshypants··on Flood of Oil Is Coming, Complicating Efforts to Fight Global Warming
It hasn't worked for the past 30 years. But any minute now it'll kick in, just hold your breath and wait.
joshypants··on GitHub tries to quell employee anger over its ICE contract
I’ve thought about doing it anonymously, and might now. Thanks for the encouragement.
joshypants··on GitHub tries to quell employee anger over its ICE contract
Your argument is pretty bad, but also, have you heard of prison abolitionism? It's a thing. We don't need the carceral state. The US prison system in its current form is a monster, arguing anything different can only be done from ignorance.
joshypants··on GitHub tries to quell employee anger over its ICE contract
When CPS gets involved, do we then keep the kid in a cold warehouse inside a fenced off pen, leave them to sleep on the floor with a space blanket, give them antipsychotics to sedate them, fail to provide them with soap and toothpaste so they become ill? Further, fail to keep records so they may never see their parents again?

This is literally what's happened to thousands of children. We don't know exactly how many. And before another person carelessly posts some sentiment about how this is okay, I hope you also take the time to do some real introspection.

joshypants··on GitHub tries to quell employee anger over its ICE contract
I don't know if companies realize that contracts with ICE are going to hurt their talent recruitment too, but they do. I recently decided against applying to a role I saw posted for Wayfair because they ignored employee demands to end their ICE contract, and I know I'm not alone.
joshypants··on Michel Foucault: Power and Struggle
Last week I got my comment downvoted and flagged for suggesting someone needed to read Foucalt.

I still think a lot of you need to read Foucalt.

joshypants··on A view to the possible habitability of ancient Venus over three billion years [pdf]
nothing like a dash of antisemitism and homophobia to get your extremely erudite point across
joshypants··on California passes bill that classifies gig economy workers as employees
Yeah, more illustrative to say the US insurance industry does not want this.
joshypants··on M.I.T. Media Lab concealed its relationship with Jeffrey Epstein
I hope everyone is thinking twice about what it means to be an Èlite institution.
joshypants··on M.I.T. Media Lab concealed its relationship with Jeffrey Epstein
Please don't act like taking money from pedophile sex trafficker billionaires to fund your institution and parlaying that access to secure their investment in your personal projects is equivalent to whatever you're talking about!
joshypants··on Ask HN: What type of restrictions does your employer have on side gigs?
+1. I'm permalancing and told HR when I was hired that I would go with the flow for now, but this clause would prevent me from wanting to go full-time here.
joshypants··on My Apology Regarding Jeffrey Epstein
The apology letter is clearly meant to have us believe he was not aware! Through omission and indirection.

> I was never involved in, never heard him talk about, and never saw any evidence of the horrific acts that he was accused of.

But fine let's say you're right. "I knew he'd done this, but at his house I never saw evidence of rape or trafficking" isn't much better. He should resign.

joshypants··on My Apology Regarding Jeffrey Epstein
Do you think our academic institutions should accept funding from billionaire pedophiles or not? The answer to this question may have some bearing on whether the apology is appropriate!
joshypants··on My Apology Regarding Jeffrey Epstein
My point is we should not accept Ito's claim that he was unaware of Epstein's background. It is a lie, designed to attenuate our assessment of Ito's responsibility.
joshypants··on My Apology Regarding Jeffrey Epstein
You expect us to believe Ito wasn't aware of the conviction? please.
joshypants··on My Apology Regarding Jeffrey Epstein
They probably take in money from so many questionable sources at MIT (and similar institutions) that Epstein's prior conviction didn't raise any red flags. Business as usual.
joshypants··on Extreme climate change has arrived in America
Increasingly beginning to think that the term "climate activism" doesn't quite encompass revolutionary nature of political change necessary to fix this existential problem.
joshypants··on Apple Is Locking iPhone Batteries to Discourage Repair
A typed passcode is a downgrade in convenience from the touch id I currently enjoy. This is my point.
