joshuapants··on Russian plutonium-fueled breeder reactor reaches first criticality (2014)
And that's why you base decisions on facts rather than emotions. Nuclear power is safe, and only getting safer as time goes on. The Fukushima plant was 40 years old, not state of the art (even when it was built). It does not reflect the nuclear industry as a whole, just some very bad decisions from people who knew better.

All the deaths at Fukushima (18,500) were from the tsunami itself. Nobody got radiation poisoning, and there is only a modest increase in cancer risks [1].

[1] http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/02/28/us-japan-nuclear-c...

But experts said the overall risk was small. The radiation exposure means about 1.25 out of every 100 girls in the area could develop thyroid cancer over their lifetime, instead of the natural rate of about 0.75 percent.

edit: Nobody vote this up anymore, I'm at 1337 points and I'd like to keep it there

joshuapants··on How Cheap Can Solar Get?
> 2. "Rare earths" are not so rare. Their prices have tumbled substantially as new mines have opened up and substitutes have been found.

Yes, but mining them is an environmental disaster.

joshuapants··on Windows 10 IoT Core for Raspberry Pi 2
Beg pardon? The parent post was whining that running Windows wasn't in the open spirit of the project. The project was never open in a meaningful way, so it doesn't seem like a problem at all to do so.

I'm not encouraging any particular software package, simply correcting a misconception.

joshuapants··on Windows 10 IoT Core for Raspberry Pi 2
The Raspberry Pi may be openwashed, but it's not really that open.

edit: oh no, I've run afoul of the Broadcom shills. Oh well.

London is huge, City of London is just about a mile square and is probably bathed in surveillance.
joshuapants··on Windows 10 phones home when you search your start menu, even with Bing disabled
It could end up like cable TV. Initially you just pay for the service, eventually you keep paying but also get sold.

I got a decent self-winding mechanical watch for about $30 from Seiko. Granted, I bought it used, but you really don't have to spend much at all unless you're really into watches.
joshuapants··on How a troubled past turned a Soviet engineer into a valuable spy
There's a difference between someone dying of a 9mm cerebral hemorrhage in Lubyanka after being disappeared and someone getting a fair trial and sentence in a Western Democracy.

> If spying is good, it doesn't matter who's side you're on

I think you're being purposefully obtuse here.

joshuapants··on Internet mob justice is out of control
Honestly, I'd say this is a rare example of a good non-clickbait article from Vox.
joshuapants··on Internet mob justice is out of control
> Presumably, the same, or almost the same, outcome (of his dental practice being closed, not the other harrassment) would occur if he were, say, imprisoned for his actions after a lawful trial, but no-one would claim that it was the court's responsibility to "find new jobs for the innocent dental employees it is [putting] out of work."

This goes back to the difference between an internet mob and a court. The internet mob acts on moral outrage. It is inconsistent for them to be outraged about the death of a lion and not outraged about innocents losing income.

The court acts on legal principles. Legally, if the dentist is to be punished, that's where it ends.

joshuapants··on Guido on Python
Pygame supports Python 3 in development releases. If you try to grab releases from their site they're something like 6 years old.

The hubris of the people who built up the southwest United States in particular astounds me.

> So the only way this is "waste" is if it's depleting the aquifer faster than it replenishes. That's possible of course. But unlikely, because NYC has been huge for hundreds of years now. If they're depleting aquifers it's only very slowly.

This is exactly the case. NY/NJ are depleting the groundwater faster than it comes back, but not at a great rate and it is nowhere near a problem yet.

joshuapants··on Safari is more energy-efficient than Chrome and Firefox on OS X
> If you read a lot of text on a Macbook, being able to zoom quickly and efficiently becomes a high priority

I read lots of text on my Macbook and I have never purposely used this feature. On occasion I have accidentally engaged it, which is annoying.

> I just want to see the most impressive things the human body can pull off

This may be a ship-of-theseus sort of question with no widely agreed upon answer, but at some point doesn't it stop being what the human body can pull off if you modify it enough?

joshuapants··on Safari is more energy-efficient than Chrome and Firefox on OS X
I upvoted you because Apple's drivers for Windows are notoriously bad, but the major impact is on user input (trackpad, for example) rather than on performance (in fact, Windows tends to perform better than OS X on a number of tasks on a given hardware configuration) so I think it would still make sense to run the test on Windows on identical hardware.

> and you're saying BI wouldn't help with that?

I think someone only earning BI probably wouldn't have the resources or motivation to do Bell Labs-style research.

> how do you think they got there? by being forced to be a wage slave, working long hours to come home completely burned out every night?

Unless you're implying that all of a sudden with the help of basic income, people's interests and preferences will change and result in a glut of engineering talent I don't see how it's at all relevant.

I'm not certain that you can extrapolate the behaviors of highly-paid, highly educated engineers with the hypothetical behaviors of the typical person getting a subsistence allowance from the government.

They probably wouldn't. But you also don't necessarily need GPS to do this. Have someone survey it topside, use that data and a compass underground.

Just threw v0.0.4 into gedit for a trial run. I like it a lot, very readable. I will echo JohnDeHope's comment that the double quote seems a little too light to match well with the other characters. I'm eager to see where this goes!

joshuapants··on Military exercise Black Dart to tackle nightmare drone scenario
If I have 3 dozen bombdrones I get set them up automatically to take off at a certain time and proceed to their targets via GPS. I will have been seen absolutely nowhere near a bombing site, and could easily be out of the country before they even take off.

joshuapants··on Military exercise Black Dart to tackle nightmare drone scenario
> The 2004 Madrid bombing killed 191 people and wounded 1800 without requiring neither suicides nor drones

Shakers in the 18th century made some of (in my opinion) the most beautiful wooden furniture with simple hand tools. But each piece took ages to produce and finish.

Now we have power tools and inexpensive stains and finishing products that dry quickly. The output of a legion of Shaker craftsmen can be matched by a single moderately skilled woodworker today.

Similarly, the fact that attacks were successful without drones doesn't mean that cheap, commonly available drones can't make it easier to do lots of damage. Nobody says you need these items to make a successful attack, just that they have the potential to make a bad attack much worse. Not to consider this while implementing countermeasures is irresponsible at best.

joshuapants··on Ask HN: Why are developers so obsessed with starting their own business?
I think a measure of independence is very appealing, especially if your career so far has involved sitting in a cubicle doing uninteresting work for other people.
