joshuanapoli··on Hate Radio (2011)
I'm not sure that's really the case. Most states have a pretty good mix of Democrats and Republicans.
joshuanapoli··on The time bomb in the tax code that's fueling mass tech layoffs
Yeah; start-ups will start paying tax much sooner since salaries are the main expense in software development, and only a fraction can be deducted per year. The tax change must make things marginally more difficult for young companies that have some revenue, aren't cash-flow positive, and have a short horizon.

joshuanapoli··on "I vibe coded and shipped an app in three days. It got hacked. Twice."
> anything you already know yourself

I think that this is the answer. Maybe someone who is great with Postgres Row Level Security will have an OK time with Supabase security, even if they are vibe coding. They wouldn't think of asking the AI for something that won't work.

joshuanapoli··on "I vibe coded and shipped an app in three days. It got hacked. Twice."
Supabase is really tough to make secure, and it is probably a poor choice if you are interested in vibe coding. Row Level Security is likely to be insecure if the author author doesn't have a deep understanding of Postgres or isn't paying careful attention to all of the generated code relevant to the database.

joshuanapoli··on Notes on rolling out Cursor and Claude Code
With Aider, you typically select only that part of the codebase that you want to work on. You can do this manually, or let the agent find files itself. It tends to break down if you need more than 20 files or so in the context.
joshuanapoli··on Databricks in talks to acquire startup Neon for about $1B
Maybe they mean the kind of biz dev that uses small bribes (a free drink at Starbucks) to help get customers to take their call.
joshuanapoli··on I put sheet music into smart glasses [video]
That’s a fabulous project video!
joshuanapoli··on Why can't Ivies cope with losing a few hundred million?
So far, the funding in question is research grants. There's an argument that research is more effective at the universities that have concentrated the best researchers.
joshuanapoli··on Ask HN: AI Replacing Engineers – Firsthand Stories?
In software development, we usually don’t really have a firm scope that gets completed in a clean way. So when developers get more efficient (from high level languages, OOP, Agile, Internet, AI, etc.) I think that we normally slide into a bigger scope, rather than finishing sooner or reducing the team size. Everyone usually gets the same boost from a coding productivity innovation at about the same time. So team size for products in competitive markets isn’t affected much by productivity. Improvements received by the customers accelerate, rather than developer job cuts.
joshuanapoli··on Jagged AGI: o3, Gemini 2.5, and everything after
The newer models are definitely more useful. Back in the GPT 3.5 and 4 days, AutoGPT applied the same types of tools, but you had to be pretty lucky for it to get anywhere. Now Claude 3.7, Gemini 2.5, GPT o3 make much fewer mistakes, and are better able to get back on-track when a mistake is discovered. So they're more convincing as intelligent helpers.
joshuanapoli··on Ask HN: How do you talk about past jobs you regret in interviews?
You’ll have to muster some positive energy from yourself: write the experience in a positive way: “I learned here that authenticity is important to my leadership style; I expect that my team to be motivated by serving the customer, rather than checking off busywork for made up deadlines.” And practice giving that positive statement with a friend or in a less important interview.
joshuanapoli··on Tesla delays new 'affordable EV/stripped down Model Y' in the US
Low price for used Teslas right now probably makes the “stripped down” Model Y an unlikely purchase.
joshuanapoli··on CVE program faces swift end after DHS fails to renew contract
Is MITRE's CVE program redundant with NIST's National Vulnerability Database? I'm having a hard time telling how the two are related, or if NVD is simply performing the same service as MITRE.
joshuanapoli··on Trump exempts smartphones, laptops, and semiconductors from new tariffs

joshuanapoli··on Roo or Cline? We're building a superset
Aider is working for me, but it’s a simple tool. Am I going to experience real benefits from switching to Roo, Cline, or Kilo?
joshuanapoli··on Apple, Nvidia, Dell, and Others Get a Tariffs Exemption Under New Rules
The exclusion is by category: Smartphones, laptop computers, memory chips, machines used to create semiconductors, flat screen TVs, tablets and desktop computers. Apple, NVidia, and Dell are simply examples of some companies that will “benefit” (be harmed less).
joshuanapoli··on Apple, Nvidia, Dell, and Others Get a Tariffs Exemption Under New Rules
Of course, I would declare the purchase, but I imagine not everyone would.
joshuanapoli··on Trump exempts phones, computers, chips from 'reciprocal' tariffs
This is a populism move, not pay-to-play. The imminent reality would have been this: many Americans will want to take a vacation to Canada to get a deal on their phone. That just doesn’t make sense.
joshuanapoli··on US labour watchdog halts Apple cases after group’s lawyer picked for top job
Yeah, there's some sense to the idea that one ideal kind of lawmaker is someone who has broken the laws but still remains a good person doing good things. I don't personally think that's the case with Trump, but apparently a lot of other people do.
joshuanapoli··on Tesla First Quarter 2025 Production, Deliveries and Deployments
I don't see "kleptocracy" happening. At least, not to Musk's benefit, so far. I think that it's more likely that Musk was in good faith trying to improve the government, at the expense of his own wealth. He's just marching to his own drummer.
joshuanapoli··on Firefox maker Mozilla prepares Gmail-like Thundermail
I wish they would tune up the Thunderbird UI to be more usable. It won’t matter if they make a cloud version that’s just as clumsy as their desktop app.

joshuanapoli··on The North Korea worker problem is bigger than you think
> With multiple people performing tasks assigned to one person, pulling in assistance from thousands of experts in any given field, these employees may become a rock star in the eyes of their employer. To the organization, it looks like their best employee is doing an inordinate amount of work.

They should just open a proper IT outsourcing business…

joshuanapoli··on Show HN: Bknd – Firebase alternative that embeds into any React stack
Broken (missing) auth is pretty common with Firebase/Supabase. It's a developer mistake that could happen in any kind of back-end, but I think that traditional back-end frameworks usually have better conventions that make the mistake less likely.
joshuanapoli··on London's Heathrow Airport announces complete shutdown due to power outage
It's not the first time a major airport is down because of power failure, and other airports are working to address this type of vulnerability.

> The power vulnerability for airports was never made more obvious and painful than in Atlanta seven years ago. An underground electrical system fire in late 2017 damaged two substations and caused a complete outage lasting nearly 12 hours at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport

joshuanapoli··on Declaring a National Energy Emergency
Ah, this emergency is already a month old. Does anyone know if there have been any concrete outcomes yet?

Maybe repealing the Jones Act to allow shipment of cheaper domestic LNG to New England would be helpful
