joshuamcginnis··on Show HN: 4chan on the Ethereum blockchain
> So what do you propose?

I'd do what we do with every advancement that challenges are existing paradigms: study it, debate it, and seek out creative and equitable ways to deter the negative externalities. That may involve banning, restricting or regulating services.

> What do you do when the information cannot be removed, and the service is critical infrastructure? What happens when the content is in a decentralized internet that everyone uses, and that everyone receives automatically?

Even in this scenario, there is still going to be a common denominator that can be regulated to control illegal content (ISPs for example).

joshuamcginnis··on Show HN: 4chan on the Ethereum blockchain
Like information, guns may cause harm. It sounds like you're looking for an absolute definition of illegal. I don't believe that exists given the evolving nature of law and society. Bottom line: information, content, or whatever you want to call it can be illegal, regardless of the elements that make up its physical form. Who is liable in the chain of creation and distribution of the content may be debated.

> How can you forbid a set of ones and zeroes?

This is like asking, "How can you forbid a set of iron atoms?" in reference to guns.

Aside from iCloud, are there any other comparable alternatives to Dropbox?
joshuamcginnis··on Show HN: Cockpit – create tmux panes and windows with ease
Neat. I personally use https://github.com/tmuxinator/tmuxinator for this.
joshuamcginnis··on Redfin shares surge more than 30% in $138.5M real estate tech IPO
Like Redfin, they're taking a tech-driven approach to disrupting real estate. They're valued at $1B, raised over $200M, have a stellar executive team, and are building an impressive suite of analytics tools to give their agents a competitive edge.

I would keep a close eye on Compass https://www.compass.com/ in this space.
joshuamcginnis··on Casper, Mattress Maker, Raises $170M and Plans I.P.O
Lookup "Zinus Memory Foam 12 Inch Green Tea Mattress" on Amazon. It's an incredible mail-order memory foam mattress for under $200. 7000+ 4+ reviews.
joshuamcginnis··on Casper, Mattress Maker, Raises $170M and Plans I.P.O
I got a sour taste in my mouth for Casper when I learned of their Federal lawsuits against affiliate bloggers who reviewed their product. I personally felt like Sleepopolis's review of Casper was as fair and observational as one could get with such a thing.

joshuamcginnis··on Pi-hole – A black hole for Internet advertisements
Someone should whip up a little community-driven service that would serve all known ad network hosts.
joshuamcginnis··on Ask HN: Do you get stressed/bummed when your code review contain bugs?
Are you concerned about the bugs or the style used to communicate there was a bug? Those are two different things and I find that most folks don't actually have a problem with the former.

The issues I've seen re: code reviews are often due to a lack of emotional intelligence amongst developers who use reviews to promote their own ego or lack the experience to know how to craft their feedback in a cordial manner.

joshuamcginnis··on My year with Elixir
We've been able to hire and leverage our existing Ruby developers to support our Elixir apps with success. It usually takes a couple of weeks of getting aquatinted when starting from scratch, but after that, execution increases linearly until it levels off at the developers' baseline.
joshuamcginnis··on Ask HN: What problem in your industry is a potential startup?
Have you seen https://simplyrets.com/? I haven't used it but it looks like a great start.

This problem is hard to solve at the root because each MLS is independently owned and heavily influenced by the National Association of Realtors and local governments. As an active RE investor myself, I'd love to work on a problem in this space.

joshuamcginnis··on Putting Sugary Soda Out of Reach
I would never tell someone to give up their individual liberty so that we can save a buck in an system that has far greater issues contributing towards cost inflation. Our freedoms and our liberties are fundamental to our being a free society; they should be treasured and not bartered.
joshuamcginnis··on Putting Sugary Soda Out of Reach
So long as what you do does not affect me directly, you should be allowed the liberty to do as you may, even if it puts your life (and only yours) at risk.

joshuamcginnis··on Can You Behave Randomly? (1998)
> kjergkjh129rgbcbmeert8848ygDGQ#%$^#$^YIUREGDSFdaw3-

I just punched in the str above. I did it because of the article (not random), but are is the string random? I could argue to the nth degree how and why those seemingly random keys were influenced by outside influences (length of fingers, my typing habits, proximity to some keys vs others).

Philosophically, is there such a thing as "random" if the very essence of matter is always under the influence of some other force?

joshuamcginnis··on Panopticon: A libre, cross platform disassembler for reverse engineering
I mean even more high level than this. If I open a binary, can I just write the new machine code to it directly and not be concerned with recompiling?
joshuamcginnis··on Panopticon: A libre, cross platform disassembler for reverse engineering
Let's assume you have reversed engineered some kind of boolean check and you now want to patch it to always return true or false. What does that process look like at a high level?
